Yeah, the prima guide lists Vengeful Ataxes as nightmares. How accurate that is is to be determined, especially since there isn't a +dmg vs nightmares mod

aatxes are actually really powerful minotaur, they attack the same and everything
Lord Iowerth
Heh, that prima guide may be more accurate than you think ... here's why I say that:
Take Edge of Extinction to the UW (normally have it if you're trapping) and watch what happens to the Aatxe when you kill a dying nightmare ... you'll see the little swirly "damage flash" around the Aatxe, meaning they are the same species ... I noticed this the other day while trapping.
And EoE is your friend for testing out species of things, just be looking at ("targeting") something else while you finish off your original target with some melee hits/arrows, and watch for the splash.

Yes, I've tested with a Deathbane mod on 1 sword and a fortitude mod on my other sword. The Deathbane sword did more damage to the aatxe on average than the other one. Believe it or not, Aatxe are a form of undead, even though they fight as if they were Minotaurs.

Some creatures are incredibly difficult to classify, especially if there is no weapon upgrade "of ______slaying" available for the species.
We've been discussing this on GuildWiki over a long time, and still havn't determined the species tree in some cases.
Undead is rather easy to determine, because of the double damage from Holy Damage and because there is a weapon "of Deathbane" (i.e. of Undead-slaying). But there are sub-species of undead: Skeletons, for example. Some undead are fleshy, others are not. Some leave a corpse, others don't.

Axes are undead (Nightmares to be exact) - but they do seem to be the nightmares of dead Minotaurs.
You Have the overclass: UNDEAD
Then you have:
Zombies
Skeletons
Nightmares
Ghosts
Animated things
and Ghouls
As far as I can tell the ones that leave corpses are Ghouls and Zombies, and theres little exception to that.

I told you my thread should have been stickied. It has awesome information that has been tested, pertaining to Undead

I was wondering about Undead VS Skeletons
Please read and sticky it

Your thread proves my statement too.
Ghouls and Zombies have bodies - nothing else. (In that thread the guy grouped all body having undead together, but I seperated races).
Which makes sense. Nightmare types and ghosts dont have bodies at all, animated things are "stealing" body parts - so the parts are destroyed upon the magic ending (Except the flesh golem elite for chapter 2 - which is stronger magic so the minion keeps a body after death), and skeletons only have bones - no flesh.

From what I've experienced with my +20% deathbane sword, I conclude
Yes, deathbane does own
