Forum Problems?
Carinae
GWG has been inaccessible most of the day. Occasionally, it's available, then it goes away immediately.
Anyone else having this problem?

Yes, I am on top of this. I swear you guys it's only a couple more days until the server gets here. We are desperately working on getting this up and running before the Jan. 20th event.

Ahh, the crunch to get a new server up. The site has been "unaccessable" to me because of slow load time, which is more than likely due to overload. (my non sitting in front of your server console opinion). The new server should greatly improve matters, as I know like adding another resource server to a network can greatly improve response speed.

I have been having major problems at certain times of the day too, nice to know its gonna be sorted soon, thanks guys!

Most likely the bandwith of the forum, a new server with more bandwith should improve this problem and the site will be accesible much more easily. At least I hope so :P.

Again, large sites do not usually have bandwidth problems. Bandwidth problems tend to be issues with shared hosting (which explains why everyone who knows something about the web think it's this problem... it's the most frequent problem that they've likely encountered with small or personal websites.) Bandwidth is not the issue when this site goes down.
It's a server load problem, for all those techie guys... it's a big difference. It's the number of users requesting information from the database. It's more processing power that we need, in order to handle all the MySQL requests. We share our server with some other fairly large sites right now, which is why we are getting a dedicated server for just GuildWarsGuru.com.

I work for another forum and I learn from that forum. They say that bandwith problems occur when too many of their members are active. This rarely occurs but the site at time slows down and people cannot open up a section of the forum or acess the forum at all.

Yes, espically with databases, they are very tempremental about how many users can efficiently access them. We have recently ourselves installed a new 1.8 TB server to handle our databases (yay 8 GB of RAM). Anyway, as Inde said, its the amount of users requesting information from the same database all at one time (essentially). Server says "Holy Crap To Many Users" and starts bogging down. Its a fairly common problem with sizable sites/network and I can certainly see it happening on a site such as this where there are so many users on at once and all of them doing different things.
Hope it all works out Inde. And after its done, I'll be sure to send you a Sys Admin Day cupcake (oh yes, sys admin day does exist, www.sysadminday.com)

Well a lot of times people use words that may not be entirely accurate to ease the passage of information. Some people may call it "bandwidth" rather than Server Load, because bandwidth is something less technically oriented people can wrap their heads around easier. They aren't really interested in the difference as long as it works or it doesn't.
I am not saying you aren't knowledgeable in the technical areas, but the people telling you it is bandwidth may just be using a generic (although not precisely correct) term.

Yeah Cherno, that does happen a bit. The only reason I wanted it clarifed here is because, what is the usual solution to bandwidth issues? Just plop down some more money and purchase more. I want the users to understand that it's more than just that. Granted it did involve plopping down more money... but it takes a bit longer to ship a server and then move the data to it.

Oh c'mon Inde, its only when your Exchange server crashes at 2AM and you have to rush up to fix it by 8AM only to find out the mobo is hosed so you can rush ship another one in a day and restore all the mailboxes you hope you didn't lose....that you get the real expierence . (true story) Thanks for your time and perserverance to the site, I know sometimes you dont hear it, but Thanks!!!
Trust me, I know how much work goes in behind the scenes. *hands cupcake to Inde*
