wife is getting that on her laptop now semi-regularly when playing GW

she'd been pretty stable to date, the computer is pretty potent, in general better than my desktop. but we're both a little behind on graphics card power.

any suggestions before I get her spec list up here?
sure it's a little choppy and her graphics card aint stellar but again she's played a fair bit, she's been to these areas before, but this is more common now

plays full screen mode/doesnt swap windows/nothing else running, xp pro

Hrm...weird. I have had that a few times on my laptop too and I'm running on a decent video card. xD Nvidia Geforce Go 6400 (128MB) on 512 Ram. I never had a problem until on a laptop. Though...I've only had it about...three times in the last 22 days. The other three times I just had the blue screen of death that just restarted the computer (I figured...it was probably from overheating which forced itself to reboot). When I had the "out of memory" error, it simply just froze GW and sometimes closed it. All I did was just...start it up again and it went fine.

I think pushing it up to 1GB of ram may help though. I have yet to tried this solution though.

Well, it says it is ous of RAM, so you get more RAM>

Post up your specs. Most likely you have 256mb of ram. Swap out the stick to 512 or 1gb if your willing to put out that much. Onsale a 512mb stick goes for around 50$(I think, Ram for Laptops cost relatively more).

"out of memory", not "out of RAM". I know it sounds weird, but technically, "memory" and your "RAM" are two very different things that are related to each other. Your RAM is the physical memory in your computer. The "memory" it is referring to is the body of memory being addressed by the software through your operating system.

Part of my post from another thread:

If your graphics adapter is an Intel Extreme Graphics adapter, take a look at this thread for answers:

Ignore the posts about adding RAM -- if you have 512MB you shouldn't have trouble. Look at the posts about increasing the size of your page file and changing your video drivers to a different version. Those are two things that seem to be fixing this problem. Here is a link to the other video driver for Intel Extreme Graphics:

http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-009479.htm

You probably need to use a different version of your video drivers. Hope that helps.

Oh, silly me. There's also a thread about this that's stickied to the top of this forum section...

Dex is correct. you really never run out of memory...if your ram chips are not enough then the OS uses the hard disk as a swap file for the extra ram you need. Your out of memory errors are just that, errors. Meaning the probable cause is a memory leak. When a program's coding doesn't "free" up your ram after it closes. Until that is fixed a reboot will temporarily fix the problem.

I used to get this alot on my Dell laptop even though i have 768MB ram.
After changing the size of my page file to just over 2.5x memory instead of 1.5x the problem has pretty much disappeared. I have only had it once in the last week and that was after 6.5 hours continous play.

NOTE: Changing the size of your page file can be hazardous do not try unless you know what you are doing or have proper instructions.

OK Time for me to vent. :|
Stop wasting peoples time and money by saying you need to upgrade people. Just because you so called fixed your own and your families computer by listening to the guy at Best Buy about upgrading or adding more of this or that doesn't mean you know computers. Let's put it this way, if you call Best Buy or a store that offers such services, you shouldn't be giving advice about upgrading anything. Just hate to see people waste time and money listening to someone who isn't sure about something. Adding/upgrading components doesn't fix things, it just puts a bandaid on it. Adding memory will always speed things up, adding a new faster hardrive will help, upgrading your CPU will help and so on and so forth but it doesn't "fix" the problem. Don't ever buy anything that someone suggest here, EVER! Go to work and ask the most knowledgeable Administrator that you have there before you do anything. Got it. Sorry for venting.

Dex is absolutely right about RAM and memory. You may have a memory leak as sugested, try killing all unnecessary startup apps by going into your registry. If you have XP it's even easier. Create a restore point first then go to the Run box and type msconfig and press enter. Then go to the last tab <startup>. Uncheck every program that you don't want started up when you log in. unchecking it doesn't mean you can't use it just that it is not preloaded.

I would also check the page file as suggested. I prefer to run a chkdsk /r first to get rid of any bad sectors you might have, then defrag the HD, then increase the page file. BTW is it a Dell laptop...if so be aware that they HD's in the Inspiron line are absolutely horible. I have a stack sitting on a counter behind me. I hate Dell, low price = low quality.

Yep I got an Inspiron 1200.
Touch wood all seems fine so far. Only bought it coz I had very very limited cash flow, otherwise I would have got a much better Laptop.

Even so I am still having a ball playing GW and since I made the changes it is even better.

I also have a question on this, I get this same error on my Dell Inspiron 1200 on my laptop. I've looked around on the web, and it tells me to increase my pagefile status. I've done that, still the same crap happens to me. The other links on this didn't really help since I don't crash if moving items. Error usually happens after about an hour or 30 mins of playing the game. Graphics are PERFECT, but this Error annoys me, especially when doing UW runs, being just in a mission, or just being in a town full of people. My video card is the Mobile Intel® 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family.
My current pagefile setting is System Managed. ( I'm a clueless idiot when coming to this, thats why I may have over looked any useful information )
I have 24,519MB of space available. ( Not sure if this helps but what the hell. )

Edit: Re-read some of the links, downloaded what was needed. Now its completely perfect!
Re-Edit: Still got the 'Out of Memory' Error. Only lasted what, about 10 minutes more ? In need of some advise, help and such.

I have heard the Rule of Thumb on the size of the page file (swap file) is 1.5 times that of your actual physical ram. Having a page file to large can cause just as many problems. You all might have to tweak and test to get it set correctly.

This is just a thought...

Claire have you run chkdsk /r in safe mode and defragged your HD?

Have you tried going to the Intel site for your graphics card http://support.intel.com/support/gra.../cs-021196.htm It offers a solution regarding using an earlier version of the graphics driver. I tried this and it has worked quite well i now get a good few hours play ( 6 hours last night & at least 5 daily) without any problems.
