I find the current chat system very annoying, It brings back memories about IRC using b*tchx or Epic (text mode IRC clients), I'm a software developer and I'm sure there are better alternatives than the current chat system which mangles everything into a single text buffer.
Tabs with different text buffers would be better, and maybe the possibility to dock/undock the tabs to create standalone (in-game) windows, so you can view two or more conversations at the same time, MMORPG games are social games, this would enhance the experience.

No, really. Irssi is a textmode client, but it comes with different 'tabs' and it beats pretty much all 'pretty windowed GUI' stuff.
But yeppers, GW chat interface is very sucky. It's handy changing the channel you talk to by hitting shift-1-2-3-4 w/e, but that one window gets really cramped. And there's no option to toggle the 'system channel (loot drops and pickups)' nor whispers. Adding a possibility to create chat windows and assign channels to them would be very welcomed upgrade.
Also, certain chat filter 'rules' settable by user would rock. Like if there's a line starting with WTB or WTS, it gets automatically redirected to trade channel.
