Guild Wars intro screensaver
Xenrath
Read through a chat log of stuff from Gaile Gray and this was in there somewhere
It gave me an idea, so I had a go at making one myself.
Screensaver - 55.3mb, self installer (Xvid codec required)
Download from Guild Wars Guru - Thanks to the GWG team for hosting
Download from Filefront
- Run the Screensaver installer, this should bring up the Display Properties after installing (if it doesn't just bring it up yourself)
- Select "GuildWarsPanorama High Quality" screensaver, and adjust the settings to suit. From here you can add your own music playlist, change the size of the video etc.
- That's it! Preview it, or let it fire up like a normal screensaver.
- If you get a black screen, you probably need the Xvid codec. Get it from here http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml The "latest stable binary" near the top.
- To uninstall, you can remove it from Add/Remove programs or the Start menu under Programs.
The full rotation takes about 10 minutes, I couldn't get a perfect seam at the loop due to the animated water but it's barely noticeable. The video was recorded at full detail, with 4x Anti Aliasing. You might need a reasonably fast machine to enjoy at its best, not too sure. For reference, my computer at the time of this post has Windows XP, Pentium 4 3ghz, 1Gb memory, ATI Radeon X800. Some free advertising for GWG in the credits hehe
Music (optional)
For those who like the intro music, here it is 10mb, 11 minutes - not the highest quality settings and recorded the seagulls/waves etc. so it shouldn't interfere with any music CD plans Anet/NCsoft might have hehe
Intro Music mp3
You can add that to the playlist of the screensaver and it will be more or less like the ingame intro then, just lower quality.
Enjoy!
Xen
Update: The new updated screensaver should have options like this:
If yours has no such options, you have the old (discontinued) DivX version. Grab the new version instead!

Good idea. I've fallen in love with the new Factions login screen, as well as the new interface for creating and selecting characters. I'll check it out in a while...

i wish if i can have this login screen as a screen saver

That's just cool. A little pixelated but wow. Great job Xenrath. I'll put it up on the front page and move this to Community Works.
Rodrigo
Nevermind, nice screensaver!
Claire Wolf
Our characters don't look like they live in a refugee camp anymore!
Eldin
Yeah! The Pillar Of The Chosen (the ascended chosen, not the ones that resemble ordinary Krytans that get slaughtered all the time). But the music, too. A nice oriental genre, as opposed to the usual login screen music, which is similar to the ascalon era of music.

Ok I made a new version using a different installer and screensaver package, plus I changed the quality settings in the video a bit. Should hopefully fix previous problems
muffinman57
I downloaded and installed the screensaver successful, however, when I went to preview it I got nothing more than a black screen, any idea why that might be?
Xenrath
edit: cleaning up thread from old version
LifeInfusion
The new screen has a bright, serene feeling to it unlike the older one which was more dark and ominous. Needless to say, I think it is quite neat.
muffinman57
I installed the codec without a problem, uninstalled, then reinstalled the screen saver, and still just a blank screen when I go to preview it. =/
Xenrath
There seems to be some kind of issue with the new version of DivX and the software I've used to make the screensaver. Unfortunately I don't have any other screensaver authoring programs to work with
However, I've found a fix - use Xvid codec instead
http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml
Download the "latest stable binary" at the top there and install that, and when it asks "Decode all supported FourCCs" make sure that is checked. You don't need DivX this way, and I've not noticed any difference in quality.

Aha, works perfect now, very nicely done =D.
Xenrath
Phew finally got it all sorted I've decided to remove the old DivX version due to decoding problems and replaced it with the Xvid version. Original post has been updated now so anyone downloading from now on should be ok (he says hehe)
If you downloaded the old (DivX) version and got it working, there's no need to grab this version - it's slightly better quality but using a different codec now.
Thanks for the feedback/bug reports and patience, hopefully it should be working for the majority

nice,and you did that yourself?
Guardian of the Light
Nice job dude thats cool.

Well Anet made the actual game intro lol I just recorded it and packaged it up as a movie into a screensaver (along with installer), took a lot of time waiting for encodes/uploads but overall it's been downloaded a few hundred times already (including old divx version) so seems to be quite popular
iliketoeat
is there anyway for me to somehow change the resolution to 1280x1024 natively so it doesn't look stretched?
Xenrath
The resize is done by the screensaver program (you can change that from the settings) so you can't natively change the resolution of the video itself as such. I recorded it at 800x600 to start with - a 1280x1024 recording would probably be a very big download
neoteo
very good work , thank you very much ... ill give you 5 k , PM IGN neoteo ex animo
Cronos Khan
ah yes, we were talking about that lol. Big thanks for this. I sjall cherish this until Factions comes out!

How long will it be before there is a new Guild Wars rap with the new asian music? :P
iliketoeat
what program did u record the stuff with? FRAPS?
Porkchop Sandwhiches
Ahh, this is awesome, ty! I had to change it so it didn't resize it, then it looked great!
Eclair
You think you can do a 1600x1050 version? XD
Xenrath
Yep, original video was captured using Fraps.
My monitor won't go above 1280x1024 (TFT flatscreen) besides which Fraps won't record full screen at high resolutions
"The maximum resolution for Half-size capture is 2048x1536. Full-size video capture is limited to a maximum of 1152x864 (4:3) or 1280x720 (widescreen)"
It would probably be a huge file at full size i.e. full screen

I maybe got an idea to make it more simple. You can start GW with the switsh "-noui", this will have the same effect as ctrl+shift+h. If someone can make a screen saver start start GW with this switch and kill GW when the mouse moves, then it would work a lot easier.

Can't download it
Xenrath
Filefront probably doesn't like download accellerators so if you've one of those, turn it off Try a different "free distro" server also; I just tried server #3 and it downloaded fine, just have to wait a little for the download to start.

Thing is the link refuses to take me to filefront...
I use Mozilla btw and not any Wind0ze explorer like IE.
Edit: Hmm, strange seems like filefront was down last time i clicked it, oh well works now
