The new screen is brilliant, I don't think I'll be able to look at the old one without wincing ever again. Its the little details like the wales in the background and lightning storms on the horizon.

I feel like the fat guy in Mallrats staring at the "3-D Image" poster trying to see the sailboat: I've sat and stared at that login screen for like, 20 minutes and not seen this whale ... 
EDIT: although i'm not doubting its existance, being that I keep getting "LOLZ you don't see it?!" in in-game messages, I do hear from reliable sources that it is there, and also that I might be a little crazy

To see the whale, you must rotate the camera so you see the back of your character.
As much as I like the graphics on the character selection screen/backround, the interface when selecting a character and creating a new ones does not feel very genuine at all. It's way too flashy, and doesn't feel like Guild Wars. Personally, I think ANet should keep the basic idea of face/hair selection, but keep it all simple.

I miss the old character select screen 'round the campfire.... it felt very "right" and "warsy"..
I do like the new character creation screens.... it's nice to be able to see all of each type (hair style, face, etc) at once... particularly the hair/skin color -- the differences are very slight among some of the professions.

I love the new look but I also had nothing against the camp one. It was kinda homely with the campfire, tents and I always imagined my characters hanging out and chatting until I logged on and picked one to play with. Now they just appear on a stone column in the middle of a lake. Beautiful yes but... I kinda miss the camp.
But its awsome all the same. Shows your character, you can rotate around him/her. See the whale. The music is beautiful also. And the character update is nice to, showing the character stats, level, location you were at last with them. Even states if its a PvE or PvP character.
