My biggest gripes about the event.
Numa Pompilius
1) The WoW noobs.
Seriously, giving out free keys may not have been such a great idea.
Every time I've visited the PvP islands, there's been wall-to-wall namecalling and insulting, and without fail it's WoW fans out to insult as many as possible and just generally piss people off.
Since they're on temporary & shared accounts there's zero point in reporting them either. I wouldn't care about it, noobs will be noobs after all, if it wasn't for the fact that there's many people actually interested in GW visiting the PvP event too, and getting this impression that GW players spend their day shouting every naughty or insulting word they can think of.
2) Lack of info.
Yesterday and today I spent an hour at the Great Temple explaining to people that to get to the fighting, you go outside, talk to The Guide, and then The Master of Paths. There were literally hundreds of people there who had never played the game before and didn't have a clue how to see some action, most of them trying to get through the impassable door at the south end of the starting area. I don't mind explaining things to people, but ANet should be doing this, not Random Experienced Player Passing Through.
3) The balancing issues.
Yeah, I've been right pummeled for saying that assassins need to get nerphed, but I stand by it: the assassin is ridiculously overpowered when combined with some other professions (notably ranger). Personally I think many haven't noticed because most have just faced WoW noobs playing the pre-built assassin. I made 6000 faction today, 4000 yesterday, so I've killed those too, but I *also* faced some of the custom jobs, and they're hard beyond belief. Hopefully ANet will notice this before the update goes live, otherwise they certainly will shortly after. I'm not happy that body-blocking-with-spirits is back either, or that there's no indication when you're within the area of effect of a spirit, but it's less of an issue than the uber-assassins. IMO. Cue shouts of indignation from assassins.

IMO there should be an indicator on all char's names who used the free event key. At least that way ppl who are trying the game out and are interested in it can see that the majority of the insults were comming from non-established players (and yes, I PM'ed a lot of the insulter's.. and quite a few admitted to being WoW players just playing here with the free key's).

Maybe add the instruction's into a temp agreement when they created the account, or make them force select an NPC when they create a character and log in that explain's things.. they should of done something.

The assassin is in no way overpowered if you have an organised group or just think of the skills to screw one over. Dulled weapon or spirit shackels will reduce their effectivness completely, and spirit is a very spammabe spell. They also just need to miss one attack in a chain and they're done. Wait for the lead attack to hit, switch to a defensive stance or interupt them and they'll be out for 12 seconds. Stay with your group and they'll be less effective as well.
The Rituals atm need something done to them, however. They're way too weak. Why should I spend a skill slot on something that gets killed in 10 seconds and has a 60 second recharge? Of course their are ways to get around this, but I still think they need a bit of a buff.

In some ways i guess assassin is overpowered... but only in the aspect that we don't really know much about them yet and there are very new. Every time a new strategy comes up we think its unbeatable until there is some time for us to think and experiment with different counters(not like this haven't happened in the past).
I would hold my vote on this until we have a few more pvp weekend to get use to the new class. once people face them a few more times I am sure they wouldn't seem as overpowered as they are right now.

Also, a lot were disappointed there were no PvE content. I know that this was clearly labelled a PvP event, but nonetheless there's tons of people there asking how they get quests, where they can get money, and if this is really all there is to the game (the Great Temple courtyard!).
Then there's all those who created custom builds, and wonder how they're to get skills for their avatars.
No, IMO the info hasn't been sufficient.

Only skill I see that can impact the game in a warping (no pun intended) affect is recall.
Being able to move your entire party great distances in an instant should not be possible.

To the OP,
I hate noobs as much as the next guy, but to specifically target WoW players is unfair. I play WoW, as do many others.
Think of it this way, WoW is fee based and GW is free.
I think the free game would attract more noobs than a game that costs money to play.
Well I don't think, I know. I've played both for a long time now and I must say almost the entire GuildWars is populated by noobs. So to blame WoW for all of GuildWars noobs is a stupid statement.

Masut - I have nothing against WoW or the majority of the players. But there are definately some WoW players who are just sitting in Random Arena's tossing out insults against people and being obnoxious.
I just saw another one a few hours ago who was calling all sort of insults to people, calling them names, trashing them.. and I PM'ed and asked them why... Their response "I play WoW and hate GW and don't want GW to get new players, so I try and make it unpleasent for new people here". How's that for a bad attitude and what Numa is commenting about concerning WoW players?
But then on the other hand just now I saw a discussion comparing WoW to GW.. but it was carried out in a mature and polite fashion.. no insults, name-callign or anything. Just people sharing why they preferred the 1 game over the other or the points from each game they liked. Was really glad to see it happening (course I laugh at the one reason the WoW player didn't like GW "I can't gank noob's".. but still, they were polite and well spoken).
New gripe - people leaving the team in RA when they see they have A/W's in their team. I've had a few teams fall apart today due to this.. they usually say something like "bloody noob assassin's, no way will I play with them!".. then leave. bah!

Personally, I havent seen anything close to this with any assassins yet (pre-build or not), and with my pre-build i'm starting to feel more and more underpowered as an assassin as people learn their counters.

Well I do not believe the assassins are over powered as I was getting my butt pwned by NPC while trying to get the hang of it. Plus since 90% of their skills are locked, I have not seen what else they have. We also do not know how readily these skills will be available later. Some are even elite.
But I thought I was the only person who thought the name calling was getting out of hand all of a sudden. With the "suck my **** Ni**er and all this other totally uncalled for behavour. Wow... honestly it turned me completely off PvP and I was hoping this event would get me interested in PvP... No thanks, not now. I got town chat turned off and the only time a henchie talks is when someone interupts their casting heh. Good ol PvE for me... away from the insane and mentally challanged.

As far as the assassin goes, I've unlocked one skill, repeating strike, looked at a few elites, and have already come up with a really powerful build (E/A) that could rip target after target up in about ten seconds each... Some things do need to be fixed, but that's what these previews are for.
WoW n00bs? Hypocrites.
Spirit blocking has been a problem for awhile (Anyone remember spirit spam?)
Lack of info? I agree, I don't know if they even really planned on having people who weren't on the game try it out.

What gets me most is that it would take like 18000 Faction to unlock a skill bar and runes to make the A/R I ever so dearly want to make, It takes forever to get that much and thats assuming that with that 18k faction I get the skills perfect. It leaves no room to play around and test skills out.

Im in Afghanistan right now with the Canadian army and i am coming back home in early March. Before i went on tour all i did was PvP but now im not sure i am looking forward to coming home to play guild wars after reading all these forums By the sounds of it these 2 new classes are ruining PvP!
PLEASE can someone make this last month over seas go fast and give me some reasons why PvP will still be as addicting as before.

lol I ended up in a team in RA: 1 rit (me), 2 necros, and 1 assassin. Both I and the assassin were on the builds offered (I was using the key as I didn't want to just delete a character with 15k armour), I was an Earthbinder. We really kicked ass after a couple of rounds and we were all used to our skills, 22 consective wins (I have screenie around somewhere) before we were completely owned in a flag running mission.
EDIT: Point to note, that last match was interesting. We completely hammered the opposition but there was one member we couldn't find, a mesmer who had situated herself just off the map. She owned us. I don't know how, but we couldn't do anything about it. 4/1 - we shouldn't have died, but she was GOOD.

I was really suprised my Ritualist spirit didnt report people in range, knowing how Rangers work. Yeah I hope that's the plan, it was disappointing.
I guess noteworthy though is UNLIKE Ranger spirits its either just allies getting the effects or they're kind of autonomous (ie dmg) or possibly just enemies (I played a lot of rit/mo but not the dmging one) - still think icon/some kind of indicator would help, yeah.. maybe just not done yet?

Ok, I don't see any logic in this. Just because you have the money to spend on a game doesn't mean if you're a jerk or not. Personally, people in Pay to Play games are more of jerks and noobs because their time is precious and cost them money. Guild Wars players can play at thier leisure, and aren't constantly throwing thier money into it, and a lot of them are actually generous and nice. I'm sure both games have their good players and bad players, but I don't think that whether or not you pay more money for the game affects whether or not there are more or less noobs in it. Well I don't think, I know. I've played both for a long time now and I must say almost the entire GuildWars is populated by noobs. So to blame WoW for all of GuildWars noobs is a stupid statement. Almost the entire world of Guild Wars is populated by noobs? I don't think so. I play the game and I know many intelligent and worthwhile human beings, as well as my fair share of others. Guild Wars gets boring to a lot of people after a while because they're unsuccessful. In Guild Wars you're unsuccessful because you're unskilled, since you cap out at level 20. In WoW if you're unsuccessful, it's because you haven't weaved enough baskets for the level. Personally I think setting up a bar of 8 skills takes more thought than going to the river, getting weeds, drying them, cleaning them, weaving them into baskets so you can do the 'Basket Weaver In Distress Quest." I don't think anyone is saying that WoW is responsible for any of Guild Wars 'noobs,' which is why it's a stupid statement. I have no idea why you'd say that in the first place. |

I have also noticed the so called "WoW n00bs" this weekend, I usually have my language filter turned off as GW is usually pretty acceptable along those lines, but I couldnt believe what is being said. 90% of it was for no reason other than stirring up trouble. And we know they are WoW players as they outrightly say how much GW sucks and how WoW owns it.
The worst is when you are in Random Arenas and get grouped with one of these guys. Ive had a good 20 games ruined by someone sitting back at the spawn calling everyone n00bs and ridiculing people.
They all seem to complain about no PvE in the demo and how PvP sucks. Heh, that tells you a lot about them.

Hello everyone. I am brand new to the game.... let me tell you why I decided to spend $50 on this game.
The PVP weekend.
I think it was an GREAT idea. I just bought the game becuase of the free event weekend.
I agree that the people on the PVP island are chumps in most cases, but I wouldn't blame it squarely on WoW. Some people just suck.
2) Lack of info.
Also, true... but anyone who can google or search this board can usually figure it out.

Hi everyone i'm new here to an the only reason i own GW is because it is free to play i cant see spending money to play a game i already own i payed for it once and i dont think that after that i should have to pay to play it...but my suggestion is instaed of calling them nOObs and turning our heads the other way a lil help goes along way....if it hadn't been for some experinced players in the game helping me along i would never have gotten intrested enough to stay and play for as long as i did...whats wrong with giving advice or helping them to the next mission town or outpost... help the nOObs and then they become players....we were all noobs at some point

As someone coming from a WoW background to evaluate GW on it's merits I did notice immediately how similar the chat channels seemed to be. I'm relived to hear that this is not usually the case!
As far as the event goes; I do think that for enticing new players (such as myself) having some PvE component would be beneficial. As an introduction to a game as complex as GW getting dumped into the deep end with PvP was tough and yes I sucked... still the concept was great so kudos to Anet for that.

Well, as a newly devoted Ritualist, I have to admit that the class has great potential to be extremely powerful (if you play your cards right), especially combined with a few choice monk skills. But, to address more issues in this thread:
Spirits should not be able to body block. I agree with this wholeheartedly.
Ranger spirits probably should not count as ritualist spirits for the purpose of channeling spells.
Assassins are broken. I watched a single A/r utterly decimate an entire opposing team, alone, and then proceed to laugh about it. Someone take a look at Templestrike recently? That's some seriously RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed up shit. And you guys thought diversion was irritating. Also, Illusionary weaponry is insanely powerful, combined with the assassin ability to teleport, and the fact that an assassin can readily doublestrike. This also goes for the ability to use sharpen daggers with ANY weapon, allowing a ranger to inflict 3 conditions on someone with every arrow, while simultaniously interrupting, AND receiving bonuses from assassin critical-hit and damage-boosting skills. 3 conditions. Interrupt. Per... arrow...
Outheal THAT.
Now... that doesn't mean assassins need a downgrade. It just means that certain key skills need a bug fix. Don't forget, when GW was in beta, incendiary arrows and kindle arrows worked with staves, too.
As for the WoW morons spamming things up... I dunno if some of them ARE from WoW or not, but... whoever they are, I can say that they HAVE accounted for at least four or five people that I know personally, leaving the game. (one because one of the guys kept creating new accounts or characters and showing up in outposts spamming "NI**ER, NI**ER, NI**ER!!!" over and over again, and spewing tons of other racial slurs.)
I wish that ANet could do something about it... but there's not much they CAN do, really. At least there's only 1 more day of it left.
aside from that, this has been a great event. It's been a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to the full release. Keep cool, and hopefully I'll see some of you in the competition arena after this is all done.

Now... that doesn't mean assassins need a downgrade.

Untill IWAY, I was literally incapable of doing any PvP other than Random Arenas as a Ranger, because no one wanted a ranger in their group. Unless I decided to make my own team with NPC's, in which case anyone would be quickly raped by the PC's..

Ah well, I still think I will give it a try, getting sick of WoW.

I only have one gripe, having PvP'ed my ass off during the weekend (OK, it was mostly kicked by the AI teams until the brilliant guy put me on his spirits team), and that's the way the Assassin runs. Can't stand it. Someone described it as a "drunken chimpanzee," and they're right. I'm sure it's supposed to seem stealthy but it just looks lame.
