Ink?

Ok, total n00b question here (and yes I've tried using the search facility, smartass) but what is ink used for?

Also, after finishing the game a few times over I've now decided to go through it as a W/N until Factions is released fully. Tonight I equipped a Razorstone and Tanzit's Shield but I want them to match my black dyed Platemail armour but dye doesn't work (hence my purchase of ink to see if that worked). Is it possible to dye these two items or at least the shield as that would look very nice?

Ink doesn't do anything as far as I know, and you can't dye green weapons.
