Beta Thoughts anyone?
Brother Foon Sped
Here's my two cents.
Haven't been playing it much. Going to be a Debbie Downer here, but I was really bummed not to be able to sample the full set of skills from both the new classes.
That being said I was willing to start a PVE character and level the new classes up... but no, I can only start a premade and unlcok the rest through faction.
The only new area in the beta that I went to was the "new" tombs or whatever. It's just the old tombs with a bunch of mobs running around. And the drops were horrible.
On a side note I've never found the aspect of Pro Farmers to be so horrible as to make the drops just horrible for the casual gamer.
Anyway. I love GW and I'm going to buy the expansion. I've been playing since the early beta. My criticisms are only in response to the lack of actual Factions content displayed in this Beta.
I'm surprised that few others had said as much.

This wasn't a BETA, it was a PvP weekend.

will there be a chapter 2 beta?
MarkyX
Doubt it.
As for my thoughts, the content is really great. I really enjoy the assassin and I can totally see the ritualist changing the pace of the battlefield. I've noticed the battles so far have been a little more hectic and somewhat less predictable, and Assassins might be a class that could be replacing Warriors.
My main gripe, as I already stated in my other topic, is the community. The problem with GW is it relies way too much on people, and I wouldn't buy the expansion if I have to go through hell and back just to join a group and play.
I do see the ritualists getting screwed over in PvE though.

Disaapointed. Considering this was a pvp event, I expected different types of pvp play and not the same random, TA, tombs and gvg.
I didnt care for the pve part so I haven't tried it. (were there any? =D)
As for the classes, I think they're awesome. I like the assasin's chain attacks and teleports. However, trying out the classes didn't keep me playing more than an hour or 2 a day. I'll probably lurk around the forums and see if there are enough pvp content before buying Factions. Well, guess its back to playing warcraft 3 mods.

lol no pve, u chould only make assasins and ritualists in pvp.
TheOneAndOnlyX
I was really upset with ritualists and thought they were weak and the spirits were dumb

I've said it before, they did the skill set sampling last beta weekend (UAS) and people still bitch about how they want it back.

Looking forward to running one or both new classes through pve in order to learn how to use their skills more effectively.
So far, all I learned is that assassins like using frenzy and forget that they have spiteful spirit on them Yup, ended up playing a ss necro cause I got faction that way to get yet another assassin skill which enabled me to play around with the assassin class a bit more.

It was meant for pvp. Tombs was just an extra.
I did zaishen stuf, unlocked some runes too. Didn't get enough time to unlock all the skills for both professions but it is okay.
Remember the purpose is NOT to entertain you, it is to test stuff before it is in chapter 2 release. They want to balance skills and armor and whatnot. Entertainment of players (as well as publicity) is just an added advantage.

Loved the new graphics layout, and the PvP training area (good for us PvP newbies). Didn't like the assasin's "chain skills" - found it too confining. Didn't play the ritualist, just looking at the skill set availiable, seemed like it would be a boring profession - create spirit, create spirit, etc. Y'all can politely let me know if I've mis-judged that one. (hehe)
Thought they did a good job with the Tombs, made a real challenge for PvE players to think a bit more about the skill sets they use.

Very enjoyable weekend. Quite proud to say that I spent the entire weekend playing GW whilst neglecting pretty much every other aspect of my life
At any rate, I got a taste of what chapter 2 has in store, and it's a sweet taste at that. I really love the ritualist and think that most tombs/gvg teams will have to replace that third monk with a rit to stay competetive which is an interesting shift of balance. The assassin also has some very interesting debuffers including one which I think could very well end up seeing off the regular prot monk.
Got some nasty lag and bugs however, one of which prevented my guild from picking up the flag when one of our players lagged out (server fault, he was still on ts). So that was annoying, but a minor blemish on an otherwise superb weekend.
Only criticism is the lack of faction for the newbies to unlock a few skills, since they wouldnt stand a chance with the prebuilts. Existing accounts were fine however.
9/10 for Anet

assassin has potention and the chain skills were a good idea, but unless the assassin uses warriors cunning or rigor mortis any good player could shrug off an assassin with little damage done, maybe it was fun laying on chain after chain on the newbs playing who didnt know how to do anything but i never once got beat by an assassin
ritualist was a major let down, their healing is sub-par compared to a monk, but their spirits and jar things were really fun to mess around with, before you die cast the ressurection jar and automatically come back to life was making the other team really mad
but fighting in ascalon and yaks arena in CA and the new UW was a major thumbs up, cant wait til GWF

Loved the teaser - it only whetted my appetite for the real thing, PvE and all.

I'm looking forward to the PvE weekend as well, if I like it I'll buy. I like the new classes, but until I have a chance to see how they actually work out in PvE, I won't be sold. Also I hope there is enough PvE content to justify shelling out the $$$ for two copies (my husband also plays.)
fiery
chapter 2 is a whole new area. PVE content.. UH ya there will be a ton to do..all PVE weekend i doubt we will have.

It was a let down in my opinion. I am not a big PvP player, so I thought I could just try out some of the skills and see what it's like...
But I had to use a pre-built to even start trying the skills. Creating your own PvP X/A, X/A, X/R, R/X resulted in no unlocked skills. I wanted to try an Assassin/Elementalist, I could not.
I do not like the new graphic icons on the enchantments/hexes/curses. I know what each skill does or I can read what the skill does. I do not need an arrow to tell me if it's good or bad. It kind of feels like ANET put training wheels on my skill icons.
The Assassin Offhand/ Dual Attack icons is a good idea, and will be really helpful, but I'd rather see something less "cartoon" looking. It makes the skills look distasteful. And once you learn what each skill does and become more familiar with the class, all you need is something like the warriors have for their adrenaline skills.
I did like the training ground, as it will be extremely helpful for beginner players, and maybe even seasoned players who may not be aware of some of the basic and finer details of the game mechanics.
I look forward to a PvE weekend event, if they have one.

I'm already used to an assassin and a ritualist and can use them properly.
I made 3 Custom build of my own with a few skills that I unlocked. He he saving up faction before the event was a good idea .
I loved this event and when C2 comes out I'm buying.

The in game changes with the login / character creation where great and an unexpected but very nice enhancement.
I didn't have a free slot and tried assassin for a short bit with a 2nd account (no unlocks for me) and like the "stacking" effect they have.
I messed around with the pvp training isle and this it's great and the new "tombs" is awesome yet challenging.
Issue, my friend tried gw but only the pvp and he's never played the game so he had no idea about the basics of how to play (what the skills do or his "role") the game but did understand the concepts of the pvp matches. He was not on when I was on, so I was unable to help him. He comes from an FPS style.
The major issue I had was more of the server being slammed, the updates corrupting my gw.dat file (and having to re-install) so it wasn't until Sunday that I could really play w/ it being stable for me.

It looks promising...we still have yet to see what we may expect in the Factions PvE sections...skills-wise, both classes have potential in both PvP and PvE groups.
Other than that, we get to enjoy some of the new changes that we're seeing now, even if we're back to our core classes and the Flameseeker Prophecies area.

I'm not complaining, but I wish we could have taken the new classes into the new Tombs. That would have been enough.
These new classes are going to change the metagame for both PvP and PvE, so I would think that ArenaNet would want feedback on both types of play.
PvP-Only events like this just reinforce the (false) belief that ArenaNet cares more about PvP than PvE. On the other hand, maybe there is a PvE-Only event coming....

It was a PvP event probably because of the fact its easier for new players to jump into PvP rather than PvE. ANet is trying to attract customers for the upcoming expansion, and the best way to do that is to show off the game in as simple a way as possible.

It would of been better to give Pre-Searing & then warp to battle isles (then require a new pvp chacter). I think this was a test to see how the skill interact.
Glasswalker
I agree with EternalTempest. I think the major reason to have a PvP weekend was to check the balance. If I were a dev at ANet, I would be looking over the data for answers to a few questions like:
Should the Assassin really get 4 pips of energy?
What should be the base damage / attack speed of A(ssassin) weapons?
What amount of healing/damage should Ritualist spirits do?
What skills should be included in the PvP template characters?
I know I vastly improved the template characters by spending my faction judiciously on a single non-elite skill. I hope they are looking at things like that.
Also, as a seasoned player (cinnamon and terrigon, thanks for asking), I found the training area useful in one regard: Seeing exactly what distance 'adjacent', 'nearby' and 'in the area' refer to. Beats my trial-and-error any day.
Buggy though. I often got half the energy listed on the skill, occasionally I couldn't target my spirits with skills, and I completed Iron Mines with an existing character twice, but the mission just wouldn't end.
It was fun -- thank you ArenaNet; now let's have another where I can choose more of my skills (more skills means more ballancing profiles...).
