chapter 2 will have no effect on your enjoying chapter 1.

You won't be able to goto Chapter 2 with your existing characters if you don't buy chapther 2. You'll probably still be able to play in PVP areas of this weekends free play, that part I believe is going to be universal between the two chapters. But, if you want new skills and/or to play new classes and see new content you'll have to buy chapter 2. In other words you won't get any of the new Armor content, though I'm pretty sure the weapons will still cross the channel by farmers from chapter 2 bringing them over to Lions Arch. And if the new market is setup in Chapter 2 then you'll miss out on a lot of sales if that's where all the best merchant players go to sell their farmed items. You'll be all alone there in Chapter 1, nobody to group with, nobody to sell your resources too, nobody to buy from, etc. etc. If you're going to play you'll have to buy the expansions eventually to keep up with everyone else (smile) Lol how's that for promoting buying Chapter 2? haha
