What good is a Necromancer?
Mirrasi
I think Necromancer is not really understood by a lot of people. I'm pretty clear on what some of the strengths other classes have (Elementalist=Nukes, Messmers=Debuffs, Warriors=tanks, etc etc ). But Necromancer confuses me a bit. And I notice they are looking for groups a lot.
I would just like a Nec to detail a little better what they can do so I can understand the class better.
Thanks

Sounds a lot like trolling to me. And this topic has been done before.
Mirrasi
Ummm, how is asking about a class trolling? I'm simply wanting to understand another class a little better than the book description. And yes, before a "search it" troll comes in..I have done that too.
I'd just like someone to give me a better description on a class and what it can do so I can understand it better. Sheesh.

necromancers summon monsters from corpses, what else is there to say?

Wow, you've never played one, have you?
Yes, they do that. However, with their Death Magic, Necros can also gain health from and deal damage through corpses, along with a lot of other things.
In my opinion, Necros are the best support class. I like to think of them as Bards in D&D: if you have that extra spot, stick a Necro in it. They can raise minions to tank, debuff enemies [more important as the game progresses], and can keep it up with Soul Reaping.

Slade, thank you. That was what I wanted to know. I understood how a Mesmer supports but was confused on Necs. Thanks for answering my question. As for the other two, sheesh..when did these boards get like the WoW boards.

after trying various combos and not really wanting to be macho warrior i went with the necro. added warrior as scondary class just to beef things up and found it to be an excellent combo, with blood and death magic i can ressurect corpses, still major amopunts of health during attacks and combined with some good sword play using secondary warrior powers can really kick ass in a battle combining sword hits, health steal and regeneration and corpse ressuserction to give any group some extra attacking options with some ugly but useful undead sidekicks

Hi,
My main char is a N/W. So far my main focus for him is blood, curses and hammer mastery. When fighting I usually put a degen that steals the enemy's life slowly and gives it to me and then a weaken armor. I'll engage the enemy with my hammer and use life stealing skills when my life gets low. I'll also use my hammer attacks to put the person on the ground and injure them. You could also use Mark of Pain which does damage to all the other enemies everytime the person you put it on gets hit, which is really usefull for a big group of mobs all bunched together in PVE. My build is also good as a warrior killer in PVP because you weaken their armor and steal life as you wail on them with your hammer. But this build does have it's limitations, it's not a main tank, but a secondary tank and caster.
So there are alternatives to the summoning necro builds.

I think Levy is my new hero.
Anyway, Necromancers have some insane curses, nukes (Some chain to nearby enemies making them semi-AOE), life siphons, and summons. Toss that in with any class and you pretty much have a well rounded machine ready for PVP. (Except for the summons... stupid rare corpses )
I have a Necromancer/Ranger 12 that will be a trapper with some nice curses and ranged damage... Once I find some trapping skills anyway .Im also leveling a Warrior/Necromancer. Probably going to turn it into a tank with nice curses and siphons.
Hope that helps.

holy crap does the curse line totally rock or what?
this secondary has made my ranger a thing to be feared terribly. as a secondary to a caster (with more energy) or as a primary, wow, you could unload some terrible debuffs onto your enemies. i feel dirty just using MOP on a boss while 20 things are in a pile, hit the boss for 15, watch -20 fly offa 40 things heads around it. brutal.

I am tried 2 nercomancer build. The 1st one i try is N/W combination... i slay 2 warrior in the pvp at the lvl1 - 15 arena. But after a long play when i reach lvl20, i find myself a support fighter... and it really sad that very few ppl wanna team with me as they keep thinking that N/W build sucks.
my sec necro build is N/E... Ahh i had become a "pure" caster...i mainly use blood, death, soul reaping and fire magic... But only a good support caster, but i can actually solo without henchie!!

I have a Necro/elementalist.
By far this is the most powerful class in the game. I have 12 pts in Blood Magic and Curses. The rest dumped into either Fire or Earth depending on situation and/or group needs.
By having the focus in Blood magic I am able to place insane health degen/transfers on a target. Life Transfer which is an elite skill gives me 12 seconds of 8 health transfer and Life Siphon gives me 24 seconds of 3 health transfer. I like to open with Life transfer and then place a Soul Barbs on the target.
Follow that up with Life Siphon, Faintheartedness and Parasitic Bonds and watch your targets health degen rapidly with nothing to do. I love doing this to warriors who bum rush me. With 41 energy I can cast all of these 10 cost spells/Hexs in one round.
I find myself being targeted instantly after the initial kill. People switching off of monks to kill me.
Anyway that is another way to build your necro. A pure Hexer really. Easy to keep yourself alive and kill your opponents.

I have been playing a necro/warrior since launch and while I can deal a ridiculous amount of damage in a short amount of time, I was worried that over a long time period I wasn't pulling my weight in groups...
...then I got Life Transfer. And I became godly in PvE and good to have around in PvP.

Hey
If we put like a N/R or a N/W alone vs like 3 aggro (Mid-High lv ennemies) attaking him at the same time. My W/Mo can handle them but can the N/R or N/W ? He's gonna get owned or the creatures gonna regret attacking him ?

Thanks Necromancers are FAR better debuffers than Mesmers. Mesmers are better overal hexers but that's because not all hexes are debuffs.

I've yet to try the blood or curse line, but they are mighty scary when blood or curses is pumped.
Once I start building my army, whatever group I'm in really starts to move.
Be it with henchies or with PUGs. Last night I teamed with a GREAT healer who understood my minions. She was constantly throwing heal area on them (with a NICE heal amount) after each battle (since they always regroup around me). I think I had an army 20 large easy.
Yeah my minions do squat for damage on their own. But I throw death nova on ones with half HP or less and watch them explode for 100+ damage on surrounding targets and poision as well.
Oh, not to mention that they are a PERFECT distraction. When we rushed a mob and somehow picked up two other mobs accidentally at the same time, we barely felt it because the minions were off distracting.
I was able to keep Life Bond up on 3 people (if I'm confident in the healer I'm with, I'll remove healing attributes and healing breeze and instead pick up life bond and protection attributes) and still have enough mana to raise my undead army thanks to soul reaping and the amount of deaths that we happening. Be it my minions or the enemy.
What good are necros? I don't know, you tell me...
Btw, if I was a mesmer secondary, I'd be friggin' SCARY. Can't wait for ascension.
With life bond and my minions, the healer was impressed with the lack of healing she had to do (she even said this).

Toast is my kind of Necro player. Okay we got diffrences in the builds and skill choosing but still.
Raising undead armys is the most fun (but not very pvp useful because of lack of corpses, but in pvp we got curses and are almost as much of targets as monks ^^).

I like playing non-minion necros, partly because the other necros are typically minion based. Playing a necro nuker is fun, it's like having a big nasty tazer to shoot folks with. Playing a necro nuker in a party with a necro minion master is like having a hydroelectric dam walking around with you and your tazer...plus if you have a lot of blood magic and can spam out order of pain the minions really start counting.
Yojinj
My experience is that undead summoner/death magic user are more rare then any other necro build. I guess it is because of the pvp element or just ppl don't like to be dependent on corpses.
Zeru
Same. I've found very few death-necros in my pve travels. The ones I do find unfortunately have little idea what they're doing often, i,e having low lvl death magic and no death nova at ring of fire for example.
They're a lot of fun up until the very end, where I've found it better in places like UW and fissure to use my secondary more and focus a lot on curses instead.

im playing my third char a n/w right now and he owns. hes great at pve and pvp. heck in pvp people are constantly running away from me. were talking all classes, war/mo messmers etc. not that it does them much good, but it does serve to annoy me having to chase them draining there health. they die inthe end though. vampirism combined with warrior skills and curses works really well.

Thing is, with soul reaping, I almost always have more than enough energy to raise my dead. You won't notice a huge hit on your energy until you get "Animate Bone Minions".
The way you raise an army is start with minions on the first death, by the 2nd death minions again, 3rd death bone horror (if minions hasn't refreshed), 4th death minions. Basically, as you raise more and more, the deaths start comming a lot quicker. Sometimes to the point where while I'm casting minions, I've got horror queued up. When my army reaches full steam, my ass is pretty much always in the air mid-cast of something (when my army reaches good numbers, that's when I start throwing death nova out. first and foremost I consider my minions distractions, protecting my team essentially... meat shields).
And currently, with 6 in soul reaping, I get plenty of energy. It's not the base energy that hurts, it's the regen. Sure you'll have a higher base to work from, but that can be depleted easliy. It doesn't matter if an ally, minion, or enemy dies, I get soul reaping benefits from it.
Btw, your army doesn't really shine until you get Animate Bone Minions. I have to insist they be level 10s though. They die fast enough as it is. I think that with just horrors, I had a decent army of about 5-6 usually.

I usually keep fiends and horros in my bar. I don't like the minions much. They die faster, they take not much beating, they don't give much of a beating and from a cosmetic point of view they are boring because they look like horrors.
Of course you get 2 out of a corpse and as a meat shield they just work fine.
My fiends and horrors are lvl 16 and minions lvl 11.

Order of pain does not affect minions. Necro primaries have little to no use in pvp. Blackace was right when he said heavy hexing was self-defeating exercise. It really is. 99% of N/Me consequently suck. Fast-Casting is needed because a lot of hexes take 2 or 3 sec to cast. Thus Me/N is almost always superior to N/Me.

I think that if played well, a necro can be a force to be reckoned with in PvM. I dont agree with people who say, "Summon necs suck late game. They cant kill anything, etc" I have beat the game with my summon nec and found little difficulty even in late game areas.
The reason that people think summon necros suck is because they dont know how to raise effectively. I use lvl 18 Bone Horrors, and Bone Fiends, I dont use Bone Minion because they dont do enough to be worth 25 energy IMO.
Anyway, I guess my point is...
Thats why I dont think summon necs suck. Its not that many, but I wanted a screenshot where they weren't all clumped together, its hard to see them when they are. And they are in a nice even circle in this one. Its only like 19-20 which is about what I average in the crystal desert.
So, thats basically why I think summon necros are good. I will always go to bat for summon necros on these forums, I feel we are sometimes under-rated.

Hey Spura, I've read your comments in another forum, and I was wondering then, is the Necro Primary simply screwed? If you were running a Necro primary and it was for general PVP purposes, I mean, what would you choose for the second profession? And sorry, one last question, I downloaded and (tried to) watch the E3 match between n0 and War Machine, and I could've swore that one of the players on War Machine was running a Necro Primary build. If I'm right, what are your thoughts and comments on that?

PieXags
Necro Primary is NOT screwed in PvP, I've been ROYALLY screwed over by some necros in the arenas and even necros using death magic can be pretty good in PvP, they've still got some hexes/status affect skills, and when they DO get a body, an extra player on the field always helps, or putrid explosion in the heat of battle can do some good bits of damage/poison as well. I right now am using a necro/mesmer combination, death magic. I must say in PvE I'd choose a death magic necro over a blood/curse necro simply because an army of minions all enchanted with death nova is one hell of a good thing later on. I personally like dealing out 800 points of damage and poisoning all the bad guys at the same time, don't you? And with that damage you can then putrid explosion the HELL out of the mobs for some more high damage, if you get into trouble you can just soul feast another 260 points of health, or pull about 360 from a minion thus covering your health problems.
As of right now I only use my mesmer secondary for the soul purpose of insipration magic. Having skills that drain energy even WITH soul reaping you never run out, ever, and you can spam the hell out of as much death magic as you want.
As of right now my attributes are
Death Magic: 13
Inspiration: 10
Soul Reaping: 9
I might lower soul reaping to 8, and then use the attribute points I now get from quests to get domination magic up to a fair bit, then I can hex the hell out of the baddies if I ever want to switch off. *evil laugh*
More than anything it's fun 'eh? And that's what it's all about.
