Last update - Why so many files
jshetley1
I haven't played the game for about 2 months and guess now I never will again. I logged in tonight got updates just fine until starting one of my characters up. It then said I needed to download over 1500 files. Looks to be about 2-3 GIGS worth of files. No way to get these on a dailup connection. What in the world happened?

2 gigs worth...definitely not. I have almost everything updated and my files are roughly 1 gigabyte.
Here's a comparison:
Today: 1,230,709 KB
12/20/2005: 1,119,255 KB

I based that on fact that at 2mb it said I had 0% of the download. To me that ads up to over 2 gigs worth of new files. I reckon they want to get rid of dailup users. Well with me it worked. Goodbye.

How about just leave it update over night?

If I'm right about the size of the download it will take about a week to get assuming I keep the connection going that long. NO way. Could this by any chance be a bug?

Well I have a TDSL 2000 connection and so I can't say for myself that it took me long to update anything ever in gw.
Though I have a few 56k people in my Guild and I must say they had also no problems even with the factions weekend event.
Maybe you should run spybot and your antivir programms(update them first or run them before update if they won't update aswell) to see if any spyware is on your pc. I would also recommend (no matter if you have spyware, virus or not) to defrag your harddisk and check your internet connection.
Good Luck!

If its making you download the factions stuff .. that was .. *maybe* 40 meg, and was about 1500 files if i recall correctly.
Do some checks as mentioned .. then, jsut let it try to download. While i've never noticed any major inaccuracies with the guildwars one, i believe it should always be a general rule that you never just *believe* a download timer. Take them as a rough guide at best, and downright fallacies at worst.
Check your guildwars folder size and compare. Mine is .. 1.5 gig, and i'd find it highly unlikely that for some reason you would be singled out to have a massive download that noone else gets.
One possibility perhaps, is that your installation has become corrupted, and the game is trying to dl everything from scratch. If this seems like a possibility, then reinstall the game to save some time, and let it go from there whilst you go do something else.

By the way, the game barely scratches the 1 gig mark, do you really think they'd add 200% of game content for a preview event ?

after that there were several that added up to another 4-6 meg
check other dial up threads and most of them took from 2-4 hours at around 36-42k depending on how much needed to be dl
i am assuming you are using a downloader that will automatically reconnect and resume instead of starting over?

ALSO
check your connection stats to be sure you are actually downloading material instead of simply hanging and not downloading at all

I finally got into the game last night after about an hour. Still having to download files for each place on the map though these are not very big taking 10-15 min each. Thinking about getting dsl internet later on. That would help a lot.

i have 26.4kbps dialup and it took a while to dl it (about 5 hours/15mb). But with the % that someone was saying, min egot to about 7mb then the %completed jumped to 50%... so look to the mb dld, and not the % or files left for accuracy

The status bar is not a download bar. The first half or so is for downloading, the rest is for decompressing and processing by your computer.

i downloaded the update last night. it was around 5mb. The first few files take a while to download (on a 2mb connection) and the last 1000+ went by in no time.

heh my file is 1.18 gig, been *most* places.
I hate when guild wars updates. They ALWAYS look huge (like when you first enter Augury rock, its around 2000 files to download) but the files are usually tiny tiny things.

The update was just to download the new areas and modifications to the game because of the new chapter coming out.
Once you are done upadting then you should be fine, well untill the next major update is available.
A piece of advice, after you login and have the time or doing stuff around the house, go into each town and let it download the files. This way you do not have to wait for it while actually playing the game.

it depends on if his gw.dat file got corrupted which happens a lot it seems on windows XP machines... I normally back up my GW directory after a large update just in case...
Best advise reinstall the game from the cd... then do the smaller regional updates. in your case it will be the Sorrows furnace update, and the PvP update from the last event... Basically ... Lions arch will take a while to load and War camp will take a while to load. maybe Droknars and Iron mines as well... rest should be very minor. but all in all no where near as large as a full rebuild of the GW.dat file... I have no idea why MS is always fussing with .dat files but when they do it really makes a mess... So I always have a backup of mine on another server to transfer if it does...
just a thought.. good luck.
