I'm coming across more and more auctions where sellers are stating that they 'reserve the right not to sell'.
Surely that is what a reserve price is for?
Just wanted to get some feedback from users of the auction system. If you win an auction and yet the seller refused to sell you the item would you consider yourself to be in the right to leave negative feedback?

Reserve price and "reserve the right not to sell" are two different things.
The "reserve price" is the minimum price that must be reached by bidders for it to be sold.
"reserve right not to sell" means "I keep my right not to sell it"
For example:
"WTS Uber Shotgun of Wammo Slaying - reserve right not to sell"
Reserve price (hidden probably) 100k
People bid on it like usual. If the bids go over 100k (the reserve price) it has reached the minimum price the seller will sell it for. That means he/she will probably sell it.
Now, let's say only one or two people bid on the shotgun. Let's say they bid 20g (note 20g, not 20k). The seller knows it's worth 100k+ so he/she decides not to sell it for that low price, as he/she would be ripped off.

milan,
We want to address this problem as well. There is a reserve price and sellers need to understand that they are obligated to sell that item if it meets that reserve price. This is not the forums, and yes... if you win that auction and meet the reserve and the seller will not complete the transaction... then you are more than able to give them negative feedback and I would encourage it. That's why the feedback system is in place so that buyers can have this information available to them and decide for themselves if they want to risk that.

If there is an auction I bid on that didn't reach the reserve price, can the seller still hold me obligated to my bid?

A seller refuses to sell me the item I have won with a bid above the reserve. I then leave negative feedback about this seller like you've suggested. Then, in retaliation, the seller leaves negative feedback about me. For the sake of argument, assume that I have done absolutely nothing to warrant this negative feedback: no name calling, no harassment, no stalking, nothing but an accurate piece of negative feedback. What is the correct course of action for me to take in this instance?
(No, this hasn't happened to me, but it seems like it could happen)

There are two issues here: (1) The negative feedback you received: You may comment on it via the appropriate button next to that feedback in your control panel in order to give your side of the story; (2) the negative feedback for the other party: It helps to indicate a trend that we may need to act upon.
Some members of the auction system are concerned about receiving negative feedback. Personally, I am not. If a user wishes to retaliate against me, that is -1, but users may see from tons of +1 that I can be counted on. At the same time, you take the responsibility to show that the other person cannot be fully relied on. From experience, I had to leave a negative feedback for a user because he did not want to complete the auction once, and he left me neutral feedback. |
