This solution worked very well for me and mostly eliminated the delays associated with using DirectSong.
I use Windows 2000 with no intent of using XP for quite some time. However DirectSong "requires" XP, or at least it does to run smoothly. If the update at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891122/en-us is applied, though, the verification and playback of its DRM files is much faster and smoother.
If nothing else, it is worth a try, and I can verify that it helped my game immensely.

Very nice find and thank you for post this. I didn't realize there were core DRM updates for the older WMP.
I had WMP 10 integrated with my XP cd so I can do a clean install with WMP 10 w/ this update (and about 4 others) when I did a clean install of windows.
