Such a noob question...
Zanven
Hey guys,
I've had Guild Wars since it was released, but just recently I started playing it. I've played WoW for the last year and finally got bored of it.
Guild Wars is so different from WoW that I'm having a hard time getting into the game. I can't seem to figure out half the stuff, and the stuff that I do figure out seems to be completely wrong. So I have a question, and if anyone wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to help me out I would really appreciate it.
I'm a level 12 warrior/me, and I have had a really hard time getting the experience to get to level 12. I think that I'm doing something very wrong, because my friend has a lvl 20 w/mo and a lvl 20 e/n. He says that I should have any problem leveling and should never find it hard to gain experience. I think that the main problem that I'm having is I don't really know "how" to get experience in Guild Wars. In WoW, I could just go out and do some quests, kill some mobs, and level on my own. In Guild Wars, it seems that the game is more geared around grouping and missions, but I've finished all the way up to Nolani (sp?). Should I just keep doing the missions? (is that the main way to level?) Or should I get a group of people and do some quests? Also, I find that I can never ever do anything solo, or else I just get destroyed by 4-5 mobs that attack me at once, and then I find that if I take some henchmen or a group out with me, I get little to no experience.
I'm really stuck, I just seem to have no idea what I'm doing. If anyone could give me some pointers and maybe lead me in the right direction it would be awesome. Thanks a bunch.

You only gain experience from monster's who are within 5 level's of you - thus for you being at level 12, only creature's level 7-17 will actually net you any experience - which means most of the monster's in the post-searing Ascalon area will net you 0 xp.
For you I'd advise following the storyline and mission's - basically if you follow the mission's and storyline you'll get experience fast as the story will keep you moving into area's where you face monster's of increasing level's and difficulty and keep you getting experience.
By level 12 you should be in the Northern Shiverpeaks area doing the Borlis Pass, Frost Gate, etc mission's.. where you'll face lvl 8+ creature's and thus get some experience from them as well as the xp for doing the mission's & quest's.
Also note that loot and experience does get shared around.. so with a group of players or henchies you will loose some loot and xp.. however, Guild Wars is a team-based game where you need to play with other players or henchies if you want to beat the missions (please no talk of the 55 solo monk's, etc.. thats farming builds and not "normal" play like we're talking about here).
Basically my advise would be:
- Read through the forums and guides here, you'll pick up a lot of nice info.
- Follow the storyline.. on your 1st character it gives the best experience and walks you through your level's and skills and get's you the experience you need to play better
- Don't try and "solo" area's unless your higher level with good equipment. Grab some players or henchies and just don't mind loosing loot or xp.. you'll get enough gold to get what you "need" from npc's to get through the game.
I mean it about the loot & xp.. Guild Wars is way, way not about your level and equipment. All you get with level's is more health and attribute points.. while AP are important.. they factor in what the game is about - skill, knowing what skill/spells to bring and when and how to use them and how to work as a team. Later on when you have 1+ lvl 20 chars you can start thinking about solo farming, etc.. but till them.. no grinding for best equipment.. you don't need to get run anywhere and you don't need to buy player sold weapons/focii/etc.
Hope this helps

Being a level 12 at Nolani sound like being right on pace, XP wise. Doing the Missions and Bonuses is the best way to level up - completing both will net you 2,000 XP, plus the XP for killing the things along the way. Also, pick up any quests you can, too - there's normally a 300 - 500XP reward for completing them.
Me NoFat
My first time through the game I did everything. I mean everything. If I could find a mission I did it. I never left an area without completing the missions and quests in that area.
There was sound advise from kamatsu up above. Do not pay or buy anything from another player your 1st time through. This will give you a big advantage later in the game. You will know where all the weapon crafters are...what collectors give in each area...and have the map completed from just playing the game.
The 1st time through is the best. Don't worry about leveling it will come. You will be level 20 in no time at all. Enjoy the story line and scenery.
Add me to your friends list and if you get stuck doing a mission or quest and see me on feel free to whisper me. I will not give you anything or run you through the mission but I will help you enjoy the adventure.
Once you have completed the game we can talk about farming/soloing areas of the game while in game and I will give you some lessons based on your current class mix.

most are 28. its a sad way to go, in one hit or somesuch unreasonable amount of time. Souldda rephrased it as "you stop gaining xp at 6 lvls or more above a monsters lvl"
And to you, guy who posted this thread originally, Missions and bonus is your friend, and watch all new quests you come across, because they often offer new skills, which cann b a huuuuge help, along with some xp
PS. Glint = lvl 31.
glint = HUGE!

Buzzer what Kamatsu means is that within 5 levels BELOW you, i.e. if your level 20 then anything below level 15 wont gain you XP from killing them. You will always gain XP from anything that is higher than you. So doing the Underworld at Tombs, FOW etc you will always gain XP regardless of how many times you do it.
EDIT - Also killing the glint would get you 1000xp as the bonus from Dragons Lair, I wont get any XP for doing it again

As you have noticed WoW and Guild Wars are very different animals.
GW has very little XP grinding, because each of the Missions (that is; Outposts marked with a shield on the map), give you 1000xp each (or 2000 with the bonus). Your main priority is always either to do the next 'Mission', or to look for a 'Primary'-tagged quest in your quest log.
You're doing well, but in the wrong direction in seems. Press on to the mountains, it's a refreshing change of scenery.

use experience scrolls and kill high level monsters with henchies.. do missions and quests.

Zanven, Kamatsu and the others are right. !st character do all the quests and all the missions. You are not even 1/4 of the way through the game. You got North Shiverpeaks, Kryta, Jungle, Desert, South Shiverpeaks and Perdition Rock still ahead of you. (You cant even see the tunnel yet let alone the light). Do all the quests and missions, get the xp, unlock the skills. And yes this game is a team game your first time through I would suggest filling the party up. If you can take 6 member teams then take them, if with henchies. IF your with other players and they have done the game acouple times then maybe, maybe I would go with less than a full team. Enjoy see the landscape, work on quest, missions, learn the different types of creatures out there and where what outposts and towns are located.
If you need help get ahold of me like the others I wont run you but I will help. Whether its advice, a helping hand or something like that just give me a shout in game and i will help with what I can. My IGN is Jay the Jake. good luck and enjoy the game
