Random 8vs8
Retro Knight
Right now there is a huge gap between Team Arena and Heroes Assent. People with rank 0-2 have about a 3% chance of finding a team... thats not good. Once people hit rank 3 they forget that they weren’t always rank 3. Add that to the fact it takes about 45min-2 hours to find a team just to normally get your ass kicked by IWAY within 20mins. The solution, add a random 8 vs 8 arena that does give fame and faction... i can already hear the whiners too..." boo hoo hoo, you can farm fame like that." The solution is simple... once you hit rank 3 you get NO fame from the random 8vs8, only faction. Not only will this give people practice on an 8vs8 but once they hit rank 3 they can actually find a team once they go to HA.
HA is just a catch-22 right now. The only way to practice it is to play, but the only way to play is to be practiced.

Simply good idea, this and organized duels (1 vs 1), and random duels, should all be implented in the game, I don't see why it couldn't hurt.

YES! great idea! i would love this. its true there s a big difference between TA and HA, a random 8vs8 would be a good additon on the pvp side. ive been rejected a lot in tombs teams because i have no rank. the only way to get a rank, is to do HA,but as i never get picked, i cant get a rank :S. so yea i like your idea.

But the OP's idea, I'm all in for that.

Anything related to 1 vs 1 should go in there.
16 pages of discussion regarding 1 vs 1 implies that there is indeed a strong demand for a 1 vs 1 arena.

This was already discussed for the past two weeks. It's a horrible idea for a number of reasons. Feel free to search and find out why it will never happen.

I just don't think a random 8v8 is viable. While in 4v4 the randomness is not such a big factor - you can still go 5-in-a-row fairly easily without any healing - how would it be if you were in an 8-man group without a monk? Another problem is quitters. It's already somewhat of a problem in 4v4 RA, but in 8v8 I think it would just be even worse.
And another thing is that unlike RA or even TA, when playing 8v8 you do need some sort of strategy. Expecting a random group of 8 people to know even roughly what to do on an HA-like map is impossible. I think this is why RA is very simple, TA is just a bit more complex (for example the priest map) and HA is quite a bit more complex. I think Anet wants your group to have some form of organization before jumping in to 8v8. I think this is also partly the reason why HA requires you to kill some Zaishen before actually starting the Tournament. Basically, the mechanics of 8v8 require a hell of a lot more teamwork than 4v4, which is why random would not work as well.
Another problem, IMHO, with adding too many new PvP modes is that it could dilute the quality of the others. A random 8v8 could have a large impact on the number of people in HA, much larger I think than the effect that RA has on TA, but I'm not certain. I only know that having too many fractured options will dilute the quality of all of them to some extent. It might not be a problem in busy times, but when it gets quieter than now, it could be a problem.
That said, something definitely needs to be done about the difficulty of finding a group in HA. I personally think a much improved LFG system, with listings of what some groups are looking for, or something similar would make it much easier.

Random 8v8 with no reward other than faction = why not?

If the random 8v8 didn't give Fame I wouldn't care if it was implemented, but I certainly wouldn't use it. Griefers, disconnects, bad teammates, horrible builds; all the things that suck about random 4v4 would be significantly worse in random 8v8. One trip to a random 8v8 arena would be enough to make me never want to play the game again.

My guild (of friends) is PvE only (so I've done a lot of random 4v4 to get my PvP 'fix'), but for those of us who want to get into PvP without leaving your existing guild, this is a good idea.
Or remove Fame

geee, can you tell who is R3+ in this thread? *here is a hint... the whiners
"Oh no, dont let new people have even the smallest chance of finding a team in less than 1 hour. OH, and if you give them fame in the random 8vs8 UP TO RANK 3, then i might end up on a team with them one day... woe is me... boo hoo hoo"
sounds like every other "elite" noob ive seen.
I'm ALL about just destroying fame, that would make my day. when the elitist nazi bastards lose, an angel gets its wings.

How about the 8vs8 random would be just like Heroes, but only giving faction, then if your team wins 5 or 10 in a row, you are all moved to the real Heroes, starting with the Ghosts.
NightOwl
Little late in my response, but this seems like a good idea to me. I don't even particularly care about the fame or faction either way, I'd just like to have an 8 person team arena (outside of HoH) that I can get into. My guild isn't too large, and so the gvg is all scheduled, usually guesting out 1-2 spots. Be nice to get some more action.
...at least until fighting a team of 8 runners.

There really needs to be a way to gain fame other than Hero's Ascent. Until rank three is a great idea and then stop handing it out after that. Maybe it should be 6v6 instead of 8v8 just to make it more interesting.

After reading over the thread I can clearly see the PROS and CONS of both sides. However, I DID like the one suggestion in regards to 6v6...perhaps TA could be adjusted to 6v6 so there is a TRANSITION between RA, TA, and HA (4, 6, 8, respectively). If you can't find 6 people, clicking on 'Enter Battle' will (when there are enough eligible 'extras') give you the 'extra people' you need to 'fill in the gaps'. Sometimes, like late at night when there aren't enough 'extras' it just won't work.
Perhaps an option could be added when you click on 'Enter Battle' which would bring up a box similar to Zaishen Challenge. The Options being Enter Battle - which will send you in if your party is full, and if not select random players for you to fill those gaps for you; the other being Join A Random Party - which would put you in queue to join parties who are looking for players and are not picky with who they get. It might not take as long in TA to find a party as it does in let's say ...HA. But, if you come by yourself and looking for a PUG it can be problematic.
Or, the Search feature that was added could be modified slightly for TA - instead of the options that would be irrelevant to TA (like Mission, Guild, Trade), it would show a list of players, their professions and levels, and their skill bar. It would make it faster ...parties looking for specific builds/professions could chose from a list to find exactly what they need. You wouldn't have to spam on the Local Channel what you are looking for, or what you are. It also would eliminate the select and reject scenario...when a party invites you because you are N/Mo then rejects you because you are running a Blood Build and they want SS or MM and aren't willing to wait to let you re-tool.
As for the 'Fame up to Rank 3' idea...I'll go on record as being against that. I agree with the reasoning behind the suggestion, I just don't feel that would be the way to fix it.
Perhaps you could add a 'Wild Card' feature to HA instead. If you just go in and click 'Enter Battle' without a full party, it puts you and your party in queue. When there are 8 players in queue, it throws them all into a party and you proceed as normal. If a random team like that can get passed the NPCs at the start of it, I think they've earned the right to proceed forward. It would have to be a 'clean 8' though. If you go in with a party of 5 and the only other party in queue is a party of 4, then both parties would wait in queue until a party of 3 or 4, or any combo of the two enters.
This would allow those without Ranks or who cannot find a PUG to participate in HA...although the odds would be stacked against them. It does make it a bit more of a challenge, but at the same time, it is fair to everyone.

I would love to try 8v8.
I was never that hot on the idea of 1v1. GW is just not designed for it. It would be too easy to grief, too many skills rendered useless, entire classes being at an innate disadvantage, too many "must have" skills against certain classes. The community is not mature enough for a "just for fun" 1v1 mode, as complaints about inbalances and "plz fix" stuff would happen instantly.

Sounds like fun as long as morons don't degenerate it into what RA is now.

I'd like to see 8v8 using the current GVG maps, and the same rules apply, only to get people's interest up and make them familiar with the maps. But NO titles for this style of play. Just faction. Also, runners and griefers would not benefit because of VoD. Run all you want, the Guild Lord is dead meat at 25:00.
But first Anet needs to fix their randomizer a little to limit the number of identical classes on a team. Who wants to see 5/8 monks or 4/8 rits on the other team? I wish they'd fix it for 4v4 as it is, but they don't seem to care much about 4v4.
Anet needs to do much more than just a once-every-two-month skill update to make PVP more enjoyable.
And 1v1, no. Pointless. Roll a mesmer and you can beat anything 1v1 besides... well... another mesmer... So just like hero battles are all about assassins, 1v1 would just be about who has the best mesmer build. Really pointless.
If you truly want to pwn3r1z3 someone 1v1, invite them to your guild hall and scrimmage.
