I just got my March PCG which named it's Best of 2005. GW was it's Best MMO of the Year and the Best Value of 2005.

Congrats to the Guild Wars Staff!

** Don't bother going to the PCG site. It's not up there yet.

It is in the printed magazine PC Gamer. They have not updated their website to reflect the March issue yet, as it is still January.

The best link I can give you is www.usps.gov - if you have a subscription they can find your magazine

They also have an article listing the 5 reasons to play GW. To paraphrase (I don't want to break any copywrite laws):

1. No monthly fees.
2. Instanced Gaming.
3. Character development.
4. International competition.
5. Single and muliplayer gaming.

They go into greater detail, of course. To see more, pick up the March issue of PCG.

Screw WoW and besides expansions do not get game of the year award at PC Gamer.

But anyway, congrats Aner and GW. I was wondering what PC Gamer's stand was about GW because since after their review I did not see a single staff list it as the game they are playing and I was going to be mad if GW was not picked for at least best MMO

GG Anet, keep up the great work.

Before I continue--congrats to Anet, certainly.

Though name another MMO (despite the fact that GW isn't an MMO, but I'll leave that alone for now) that came out in 2005 that you think could have possibly contested this decision.

Actually, Guild Wars is an MMO[G]. MMO[G] stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Game. Has anyone been in a high district of Lions Arch during Halloween or Christmas/Wintersday? After seeing the few hundered people running around in there, do you really doubt the massiveness of this game (I'm assuming no one will argue that it is multiplayer ). Guild Wars may not have a monthly fee, but the fee is not what makes it an MMO. Anyway, congrats to Anet!

No, a persistent world is what makes it 'massive'. GW lacks a persistent world, and is therefore not an MMO as such.

Excellent... Well done Anet!

This is my first venture into online gaming and I have not been disappointed. GW impressed me right from the start when I first loaded it up and has continued to do so, especially with the Wintersday and Factions updates.

Keep up the good work!

Persistent as in what? I can log in at any time and find people in Lions Arch, Ascalon City, or virtually any other town in GW, because those districts are always there. Thats pretty persistent to me. Just because some areas (ie, non towns) are instanced doesnt mean guild wars isnt an MMO. Is World of Warcraft not an MMO because the Onyxia mission is instanced? Of course not, thats just silly. Guild Wars is online only, with thousands of players occupying the same districts in the same cities 24/7. It doesnt get anymore persistent than that.

It gets a lot more persistent than that. Like in your post, you named WoW. WoW has a very much persistent world within each server. Granted, WoW has instanced dungeons, but those dungeons take up less than 10% of the total game, from what I understand.

Whereas in GW, 90% of the game is instanced. Some areas? Everywhere. You can never see more than ~100 people at any given time--thus making it far from massive.

Personally if I want to role-play I'll go pen-and-paper with some friends. When I play MMOs I just want to jump in and bash stuff.

Maybe you should read what makes a MMO before you call it "far from massive." Just beacuse GW is 90% instanced does NOT mean it is not massive. Read what defines a MMO and you will see GW meets all the Req. Instanced doesn't mean you can't play with certian people, on GW you can play with ANYONE ANYWHERE, and are only restricted by your character advacement.

GW is a MMO because no matter what you are doing THERE IS A WAY FOR THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TO BE OPEN TO YOU. Thats what Massive means in terms of a MMO.

It is Multiplayer for obvious reasons

And its 100% online.

Another reason that GW is a MMO is that IT WOULDN'T HAVE WON THE AWARD IF IT WASN'T.
