Howdy.

Just wondering why chests never drop anything for my primary character (E/Mo. Pyromancer) all I seem to get is earth,Air, or water drops.

So far I have only had 1 fire drop (I'm in Kryta now) and that was a gold fire wand.

Is this the norm??

I always want some really godly weapons to drop.....but instead i mostly get high level weapons, and the mods are not even good. So i only open a chest if i find a key, but if i go UW runs....i buy the key, because who knows.....a req 8 15^50 storm bow might drop.

What you are describing is normal. You are supposed to gain, on average, less gold than the value of the key. However, there is always that chance you can make an easy 100k+, which is why people gamble with keys.

Just an observation but it seems to me that whenever I buy a key and open a chest I tend to get junk, a gold scroll with +5 armor vs plants for a 1500g fow key last week and if I get keys as drops I tend to do much better from the chests, I got a near perfect eternal bow the last time I had a phantom key drop.

Judging by these replies, is it worth it buying keys or should I just give up and wonder what might be?

I have so far only had 3 keys drop in over 3 months of daily play. Will this go up if I have no keys to start with??

meh, those are rare. Usually they are just requiring skill X, and benefit skill Y. And usually the X-Y combination is one that makes no sense.

2 chests in a row.

I may stop using chests, but look at the merchant price of the first, whats the deal?

how does this make sense I ask?

i got an icy wingblade from a FoW chest once with a key i bought and it was purple with no stats. Luckily i managed to salvo it and sell on for more than .1.5k

IMO always buy keys but let someones else open the chest first. If one purple drops all are purple. If a gold drops all are gold.

Anyone know why the earth wand is worth so much to a merchant even though its crap?

Phreak. My opinion is that it is just random (within a value range) for the merchant price of the scroll. I've had 2 swords with the same exact stats that were almost 100 gold different in price. But, the strange thing is that I had a Earth Scroll last week that was worth 398g to the merchant. It was from a key I found rather than bought. The highest merchant price item I've had. Maybe Ranger Rog is onto something.

Forgot to say that it may be that the Earth item value is strangely higher than others too. Long shot but who knows.

Keys are only worth it if you can spend a massive amount on them. You'll eventually hit upon an item that will pay for all of your keys, and then some. Also a quick note, don't bother with keys until you get to the desert, as you'll almost always get junk in the early areas.

They may almost always be "junk" (that's completely relative term depending on the player) but you can often salvage neat stuff out of the junk and end up with some decent upgrades for later when you get to the chests with the maxed weapons.

Also the earlier keys are cheaper anyway so why not have 2 or 3 with you just in case?

I'd have to agree though >IF< you're talking about a 2nd or higher time going through the game. After you've already gone through there's not so much point in bothering with the low stuff.

---

In my overall experience (starting my 2nd month of playing) I've used dozens of keys in all kinds of zones and so far it's all been worth it. I've gotten the "junk" drops of course but, like I said above, I salvaged them out so that now when I get maxed stuff I have the mods to drop in them.

If I was the patient type that was into advertising over and over i could easily have sold enough to pay back what I've spent on keys. To bad I'm not patient so I have three mules to support my pack-rat main character.

---

Besides... even with all the other stuff set aside...

Who doesn't like to get presents and rip into them with hopes of a Red Rider BB Gun?!?!

I believe 10% chance of halving recharge of all skills is perfect (and is not a bad stat if combined with others), so that's probably why it's worth slightly more than the non-max artifact.
