Reason for the ogre slaying knife
Fox Reeveheart
I am sure most of you have heard this already, but for those who haven't and wonder why the ogre slaying knife was even made, heres why.
Ogre slaying knife is a tribute to a playstation 2 game called "The summoner", which IMO is the greatest ps2 rpg made, despite it was made in the first year of PS2's release.
If you press like x or something during the intro or menu or whatnot, you'll be taken to a cinematic with some of the characters (including a guard from red faction, as both games are made from volition) all playing a game of table top D&D. Eventually after some arguing and whatnot over a mordenkainen spell, one of the characters, a giant monster, asks where the cheetos and mountain dew is (ahh yes I have many memories of doing this as well ). Afterwards a wizard and an elf are surrounded by ogres, the monster speaks up "Ogres? Man, I got an ogre slaying knife, it's got a +9 against ogres"
DM replies "You're not there, your getting drunk!"
monster replies "Ok, but if theres any girls there, I wanna do them!"
And there ya go the reason behind the ogre slaying knife.
The actual cinematic can also be seen on Ifilms.com Just do a search in there for summoner or summoner geeks or something like that.

Guess what? It's not from Summoner.
It's just an old, old sketch done by the Dead Alewives. It's popped up in several places since then--including Summoner.

X of Thulcandra
When I first heard about it, I thought it might have been a tool for slaying ETTINS, not to mention that it would look totally badass, with built in brass knuckles and a serrated blade...Instead we get an unsaturated grim cesta.

The knife may have some use.
Knife + Illusionary Weaponry = Slight pwnage? Fast atk rate, so it's possible. A friend of mine recently did some significant dmg with that combined with the knife.

8-Bit DnD has a better view of the knife. I'ma DnD hore so anything I like in 8-bit == godly. SirJackassIII has the link 2 above me if you havn't seen the 8-bit ver.

The Summoner one messed up though, listen to the voice of Galstaff (or however you spell it) once they get surrounded.
Aigred
There's a Galstaff the Light in Talmark Wilderness. I wonder if he would react to the knife?

The Dmg +9 (vs. Ogres) property is purely cosmetic, as there are currently no monsters of the ogre species in Guild Wars. This weapon is a reference to an audio skit made by the Dead Alewives, a comedy group. In the skit, which is about Dungeons & Dragons, one character proudly announces that he has such a knife - "It's got a plus nine against ogres!" This skit was reproduced in the game Summoner by Volition and, most recently, by 8-bit Theatre fans under the title 8-bit D&D. |
