question about weapon upgrades

i have an axe upgrade that says it lengthens weakness on enemies, so my question is, if i equip this, do i have to use a spell that gives weakness to enemies, and the axe just lengthens it, or does the axe itself apply weakness due to the upgrade

You have to use a skill that gives weakness. The axe only lengthens that time.
