I came from RO and went to GW and i love the gameplay of GW much much more.
You dont have to worry about HOW you level up (attribute and skill spread) because you can change stats in any town.
Imagine if in GW, you wanted your sword warrior to change to axe (because later enemies do not bleed). You'd have to delete him and start over!! ~.~
Thats something GW offers that no other MMORPG can offer. Experimentation and Flexibility without the long long long long long grind.
The community aspect of GW is not as good as Non-instanced MMORPGs though because you most likely will NEVER meet the same people EVER again, because of the multiple districts in the bigger towns and missions.
Only in smaller outposts with 1 district does the feeling of community actually reside.
The PvP aspect has been covered already. Its balanced and even in terms of equipment and skills (no experience on the other hand....).
Although i miss mounts...and sitting down and making a private store, GW offers more for me (my friend is trying to get me back to RO~!!)

That's where the New Map travel as a party is Uber cool...
If your in a guild. everyone go to the guild hall. Form up and head off to where you want to go to as a party via map travel. (that's assuming everyone in the party has that map point) No more "Where ? What Dist again??" in guild chat.
Now something I have seen that GW devo team is working on is VoIP technology... Well at least they are recruiting for these positions at arenanet... This I'm sure because of the necessity of using teamspeak to be a very successful Team in PvP... For that matter in PvE too... So I'm sure they are looking at new options for this in game, rather then outsourcing it to 3rd party TS servers that gaming clans use...
That's why you see some parties forming with TS req... Its free so why not... Pop on a microphone and find a new way of playing if you have not tried it yet... It really makes game play a joy... and you can turn off the annoying text chat during matches with no penalty...

This is not advice, more of an opinion.
Well I'd never played WoW so I guess I'm not qualified at comparison. I do know facts though, and a couple of my friends play WoW so obsessively it honestly scares me. One of them even lost his daily (good payin, mid u) job.
Being a bit older and having a job means that I can't afford the luxury of a 40+ guild raid that lasts for 8 hours. Killing a boss for straight 4 hours doesn't sound as my cup. Of course, I'm talking about after 60lvl guild farms and battles, not up to lvl 60 questing.
I picked up GW mostly for PvE, having a more casual pace, and of course no fee (so you don't have to justify playhours monthly to yerself).
Also, although seasoned RPG-er, I must admit I like 20lvl cap in GW->means less or no grind for rabid kids. More skill, also more casual. Im not that hardcore anymore.

Ok, I haven't checked this in awhile. Thanks for some opionons. The main turn offs for me for GW is the low level cap and the items not making as much of a difference. That is what I like about WoW is the sense of accomplishment. When I got my first 60 I was so excited, when I got my first epic it was awsome. If I can find GW for 25$ thne I think I will go for it. I haev a few noob questions. How many different servers are there, do they have any differences and are there any guilds that would be willing to take a new player
ps. stop flaming WoW, I realize you may not like it but it is an amazing game(to me and the other 5 million people who play). Thanks for the comparisions

technically there are regional servers... but you access them all via international districts if you want to play with people registered on other servers. Generally though you can find plenty on your local region setup.
Its slightly different then WoW in that you log in 1 place. you don't have to change servers ever really... Everything is in your regional area that there is... Only reason to go to international is to meet someone from a different region...
The town points are the MMO meeting places, and each town has muti number of districts. I think the record on 1 town was like 60 districts... but I think that was for Halloween in Lions Arch... EVERYONE WAS THERE...
I noticed for wintersday they spread out the stuff across more locations to prevent that overcrowding...
Then Finally missions and PvP... U just go there via map travel... No need to walk or hitch rides, but you can if you want to. many do this as a taxi service for people without the map point to travel too yet... Each mission takes you to the next map point on completion.
the missions are an secured instance... A kind of P2P Client2Client is more appropriate... system... so the leader hosts and party is routed through leaders connection. this reduced bandwidth requirements on the server. But it does mean that slow connecting people should not be party leaders... Generally that is a High Speed guy with a good connection... What this means for you however is that you don't have to worry about loot on the ground for you getting stolen by Other player raiding parties shadowing your activities... IT even stays reserved for you for a given period of time... Gold is shared on pickup so that's an equal bounty as well with the party...
The PvP part of the game is Dynamically different... Trying New Builds are key, as is communication for coordinated attacks. Team Speak is still the number one used tool for PvP in conjunction to the GW client itself.
The PvE Story is and interesting and twisted tale. Its worth getting with a new group to watch the full story cut scenes... Because there is often pressure with veteran groups to skip cut scenes asap to get back to action...
Much of the community has no patience... so that's why I said try to go with a group of friends and maybe one Vet to assist here and there... and you will enjoy the story more...

If you're used to the advanced atmosphere of WOW meaning higher level limits and phat lewt, you won't like GW's at all. It's level cap is 20 which can be reached very quickly. The lewt is so sameish and hardly anything worth 100k that many ask for, they try to make an mmorpg out of it, but, it just doesn't fly. Everything is rather easy to come by, even the game will just give you armor and phat lewt weapons if you just bring it some resources.
Fighting is repetitive, hack n slash, not much tactics. Press button 2, press button 3, press button 8, rince and repeat, gather lewt, go find next group of npc and do it again. VANITY is the leet status in this game, not superior weaponry or armor like the other mmorpgs. You spend 2 million plat on some silly looking FOW armor and you're leet though the stats are no better than the 1500gp armor. This is the most silly part of the whole game. But, it's all about BALANCE for the PVP portion of the game which it caters to most of all. That's why level 20 is the cap and every weapon and every piece of armor has a cap that will never increase. Only the LOOKS will change over expansions.
PVP has turned into an elitist game, so, being new you can forget about getting into many good pvp groups. You'll be toss aside as a NOOB and delgated to playing on an IWAY team over and over and over and over again until you can get some rank which takes forever even with IWAY at 1pt a shot. But, even that gets old and repetitive since the battles are always the same areas, look the same, feel the same, doesn't change from battle to battle cept you might see some different victory conditions from time to time like relic runs or capture the altar, many are just kill or be killed.
It's kind of funny, because I am one fixing to move to WOW or DnD Online as soon as it comes out. This is really just a toddlers toy or a past time sort of little game, it doesn't have enough meat once you've played a regular mmorpg. No player crafting whatsoever. Nothing to do once you've complete the story except farm for skill points and farm for faction (if you play pvp) or farm for really nothing but something to do and perhaps find some rare SKIN that's no better than an npc weapon you can buy and mod yourself.
I do want to add one thing though. It's every bit worth it's price now at Amazon.com of $39.99 you WILL get your moneys worth whether you play it a long time or not. It has that pizazz when you first start. I loved it when I first started. But, then they started nerfing things and taking away from the PVE player and it just became more and more boring and no fun. Drops decreased 100% and getting a gold (rare) was like finding real gold in real life after the nerfs. Before all the nerfs to drops though it was the perfect little Diablo 2 online game.

Anyway, GW has two major drawbacks.
A) The PvE is somewhat short. It's note extremely short, in fact it took me longer to complete then most other RPG's out there but it is short.
B) it's level cap and balanced loot. This is probably one of the biggest reasons why some people love guildwars and others hate guildwars. In guildwars everything eventually boils down to skill. There is no item in the game that will save you from stupid mistakes. Personally, I love that. I know that if I win a mission it is an accomplishment I made and not my stats. This does mean however that everything you can achieve PvE-wise is just pure vanity. There is no bragging about loot. The 'biggest' achievement in PvE is just an armor that looks different but has the exact same stats as the one everyone else is running around with. It's a basically comes down to this question: What do you want? Balance or better loot?

I've played both games since retail release of each. If you expect GW to be like WoW, you will be disappointed. GW is a very different game that you have to take on its own terms. Liking WoW, you might like GW, but then again you might not. Read lots of reviews and forums before spending your fifty bucks.

I also switched from WoW to GW some weeks before christmas and I don't regret it one second.
Here are 3 things that makes GW a superior game to WoW:
PVP (simply amazing, well balanced and FUN)
Not having to spend 1351258245 to complete an instance (mission)
Balance (the whole game is so balanced. Not one class can pwn another class without breaking the sweat. it's more skill than equipment)
Here are 3 things that makes WoW a better game than GW
HUGE (if you got 1530598135 hours to spend on grinding for the best stuff you won't be disappointed. There are tons of things to do here)
Some gameplay mechanics (like aggro management, crowd control and movements)
Everything isn't instanced (can be a problem if some douche bag decides to kill you over and over again. Trust me, that happens alot. But it's nice to actually see other players outside the towns and it also makes for some great PVP experiences)
Just my 0,00002 cents

I recently come from WoW myself.
I have a lev 60 priest. I have helped organise and create a guild to do Molten Core and Black Wing Layer. I did everything the game had to offer.
As far as "Is GW better?", the answer is no, it's a completly different game type.
It is like comparing and asking if Half-Life is better than GTA. Yes, at some points both games will alow you to shoot a gun, but in no way are they similar. But back on topic...
PvP in wow uses a copletly different skillset to that of GW. The "honour" system is more like a "bragging rights" system to show off the players with the most time invested characters. Which appeals to some, but not all. WoW is more hardcore.
Now the "PvE" side is where the games dont even compare...
In Wow 1-60 PvE is considred casual content, at 60 thers little to no casual things to do. Both games have a creative and in depth quest systems. After 60, the hard-core gaming and "fair" pvp beguins.
With GW this is completly different... 1-20 is considered the "learning curve" and 20 is where the actual casual AND pvp content starts. There are no "levels" as such (even though they are called levels), these are meerly in there to teach you the game.
In Wow the learning curve is divided because there is A LOT more to learn.
1-10 is basic training
10-20 tallent introduction
20-40 instance introduction
40-50 advanced tallent and instance training
50-60 end game training
60+ Raid training
You people think GW is in depth... Not the kind of in-depth WoW is, you can spend 6 month learning 1 of 8 characters and know nothing but the very basics of the other 7. apparent lack of skills and builds is not all there is to learn, the game is mostly about equipment and character development. A change of sword can ensure victory or defeat.
In conclusion. Neither game is "best". WoW is perhaps aimed at a different croud.
The question is, which croud are you in?
If you have less than 15 hours a week to play, then switch to GW. You need significantly more time to play AND maintain your WoW character.
If you prefer small party battles (5 ppl) at maximum level of ability (max lev + equipment) then GW is CURRENTLY (wont be after the WoW expantion) better.
If you prefer "skill" based pvp over the "time" based pvp then GW is again the game of choise.
If you want long character development with a tight server community (and have the time for it) then WoW is your game.
If you love huge PvE battles and being part of a 40 man group (yes some people do) then WoW is your game.
If you like outdoor randome PvP ... WoW is IT, GW has no outdoor, unorganised PvP.
On a side note, you CAN play and enjoy BOTH games if you have the time to play WoW.

Well I agree that both games are diff I myself play them both and I can’t really compare, the most obvious thing about both games is the time you have to play them.
In GW you have a most fast passed game and in WoW is a slower game.
Cos in guild wars you don’t need to go mining, skinning or even cook etc… and these things is one of the things that you do in WoW.
Guild Wars world is smaller and towns and not that far apart and u can always map teleport in WoW town with bird riders can sometimes be 2 far apart. Until you you hit lv40 for your mount etc…
So in my opinion I play both games and love both games and at the same time I hate some aspects in both games.
Now if they combine some parts in WoW with some part in Guild Wars, then I think this would be the best game ever made.
But cos this will not happen I am happy to play both games, I normally play Guild Wars for 3 months get Bored and play WoW for 3 months get bored and I am back to GW and so on.
At least WoW is not like FF were if u cancel you account you need to buy the game again, so as long u log in every 6 months they will not delete you account in WoW.
And for the people that complain that WoW is crap cos u need to pay bla blab, well I don’t think is that expensive if you play one of the called pay to play, just think £8.99 that’s 3 pints less a month or 2 less kebabs it cant be that hard then but if you still complain about it then I guess you will look for another game cos GW will release two games a year that’s almost a subscription.
Have Fun in whatever game you play

I played Everquest for years before started playing GW. Very different games, let me tell you.
Overall, I like GW more for much better graphics, better game play (except there are too much running around between battles, and during travel). But I dislike GW's player community. In everquest, people kinda respect others and their own characters; they try to keep a good reputition. In GW, I would call it a lucky night if no more than half of my group is jerks or immature kids.
Also, average player skills in GW is very low. tanking elementalist/ranger/necro is the norm, players who never call/follow target is commonly seen, etc etc.

If you like grinding, leveling up, killing monsters over and over, trying to find godly items so you can compete, etc. WoW is for you. If you *only* play PvE and have no interest whatsoever in PvP, WoW may be for you too.
If you prefer playing competitively (PvP), strategy and tactics over level and items, GW is probably for you. If you're looking for balanced classes and coherent, tactical PvP over mobs of people running around killing those weaker than them, GW is for you. If you don't like paying a montly fee, GW is for you.
Just don't go into GW expecting a MMO in the traditional sense. GW is a new type of game and if you expect an MMO, you may disappointed (or pleasantly surprised).

I don't know if the original poster is still reading thsi far....
But I'm gonna talk anyways.
One thing nobosy has really emphasized yet is how in touch the dev team is with the players. Gaile Gray is the community relations manager at ArenaNet. It is her job to read this forum, as well as about 4 others that are considered The Elite Fansites. She then passes information along to the dev team, and a few weeks later bam! we have it. (well, sometimes. There are alot of things some people want that will NEVER happen). Gaile also holds Q & A sessions in the city called Lion's Arch after every significant update, and other times too. A few months ago the Frog joinded the mix. Some say this Gaile using a differetn name and text colour, I am personally of the opinion that it is just another Anet employee. The Frog used to give us cryptic messages about updates to come...maybe he will start that again.
My point here is that Anet is ALWAYS listening to the community, and they really do care what we think!

The Frog used to give us cryptic messages about updates to come...maybe he will start that again.
My point here is that Anet is ALWAYS listening to the community, and they really do care what we think!
