So if your goal in this game is ultimately to be very competitive in PvP, do veteran players essentially run through the PvE campaign multiple times to unlock all the skills of all the classes.
Is there a better way? Can you unlock skills from PvPing?
I saw a "ranger checklist" that allowed you to unlock all ranger skills. What wasn't clear is if the checklist simply listed all ranger skills and was therefore no real shortcut at all?
Any help or links would be appreciated.

As you fight more in PvP you gain faction, this is used to unlock various skills/runes/weapon mods.

You can unlock all skills from PvPing, but that's a lot of faction. With my second account (that I'll be using for PvP) I'm getting 2-3 different chars through the game capping what I can until I get to Ember Light Camp. There you can buy all the non elite skills.
However, you really only need one char to do that. With the ability to change your secondary profession in the desert, you could just as easily get all the skills that way. Skill points, however, would run out eventually- hence the multiple chars.

well... if u wanna unlock most of ur skills with faction... then u should first decide what kinda build u wanna do it with... imo u won't be wanted much for HA or GvG's... so u should focus ur build for Arenas... i would recommend building a Prot/Boon Monk... most teams that have those will win... netting u a lot of faction thus unlocking more and more skills... do a search and copy the build

Note that changing the secondary only allows you to do the basic Ascalon and Yak's bend profession-specific skill quests. This does allow a quick series of fast unlocks for those skills.
However, to get the rest of the skills, it may be easiest to rush a character through the game and do just the skill quests.
Or you can just take your time and enjoy yourself while learning to play each profession.

from my experience -
3 characters PvE covering the 6 classes, get a lot along the way targetting quests, those chars also get skill points levelling and doing missions to buy those that dont come from quests, also buy SoCs
round out faction purchases for runes, mods, and where needed skill unlocks to do what you want
you can streamline by focusing on what class(es) you want in the mix first and then add the rest as you can - do the obvious for speed ups (get run to droks, have quality equipment where/when you can, etc)
still unlocking all will take a long time - I went for E/ME first and did it, then my ele unlocked more, my other two chars came up the ranks, etc

You can do it all in PVE, but then you need to either run three characters through the same quests and missions, or grind hell of skill points to buy up skills after changing secondaries.
You can do it all in PVP, but getting all that faction is a pain if you don't have skills unlocked to begin with.
I recommend a hybrid strategy! Play PVE until you're tired of it, then use what you've unlocked in PVP to get the faction you need for the rest.
