no the kryta PvP is on an island. You access it from the beach.
If thats the gate between Gates of Kryta and LA... it would make sense. But whats funny is when you load into LA from Gates of Kryta (well I do anyway) I always show up by the fount in the centre square.

Those gates lead no where although they use to be the gates you use to go through to get your first weapon when making a an rp char.

when making an RP character? yeah I don't know. You can't make a role playing character. And your first weapon begins the game with you... why would it be in LA?

The first time I played GW was at the 2004 WPE. Gates of Kryta (or something like it) was the training area and it led to LA. But I don't think you actually started in LA. I dunno, its been a while.

It's probably not implemented yet or was removed at some point... Devs have said they can easily switch new content they added on at will. (PvP Weekend for example)

well.. hmm i think there used to be an pvp arena over there since they removed the arena from there, they just left the portal in there ^_^

Yeh in the WPE you used to start with no weapons and in a little area just above LA (and later on, Ascalon) where you'd have to talk to a bloke then go to chest to get a weapon, then kill a couple of fella's then you'd be let into LA, if i remember correctly

The portal was there always, never opened though, never accessible. The tutorial area during WPE was just a shorter version of Gates of Kryta mission.
If the doors opened, they would lead to the mission area.
The LA arena was accessible by ship from the port and was on an island.
Another interesting closed doorways that came to my mind now are:
-a portal just like this that has appeared in the Grand Temple of Baltazar, but there's nothing behind.
-closed gate in LA just behind Guild Registrar
-both mysterious UW doors (confirmed that there's nothing behind)
If the doors opened, they would lead to the mission area.

I reckon it was for the arenas that were in betas. Each major place (Lion's Arch, Ascalon, etc.) had an arena.

At the end of the Gates of Kryta mission, the scene shows your group running across a huge bridge. On the other side of the portal is the bridge you crossed to get to Lion's Arch.

That used to be the arena, these an unusable portal in AO to that used to be an arena as well. There used to be on arena in each major city till the moved them to the port of lions arch and bundled them all together as the CA

the gates in the underworld may not be sealed forever (past the smites). hint hint.... lol
oh and the gate in Z Challenge is accessable with a special Battle Isle Quest. , same with the one from Temple of Balthazar. It just leads on a path to the Z Challenge... Some portions of this area are unfinished yet.. But others are accessable IF you know how...
