Name: Sin Trapper (my ranger's IGN is Sinthea)

Type: PvE Farming

Category: Trapper/Farmer

Attributes:
Expertise 14 (11 + 3 Superior Rune)
Wilderness Survival 16 (12 + 3 Superior Rune + 1 Traveler's Mask)
Marksmanship 9 (6 + 3 Superior Rune)

Skills Set:
Distracting Shot (Expertise)
Whirling Defense (Expertise)
Dust Trap (Wilderness Survival)
Barbed Trap (Wilderness Survival)
Flame Trap (Wilderness Survival)
Apply Poison (Wilderness Survival)
Oath Shot {Elite} (Expertise)
Troll Unguent (Wilderness Survival)

Summary: This build is to farm solo with. I farm Trolls, Ettins, Losaru, Minotaurs, etc. with it, basically any melee-based opponent. The idea is to set up traps (between 1 set and 3, depending on how tough the "farmee" is), apply your poison, then pull using Oath Shot. Tab/space to get as many poisoned as you can while they are coming in.The mobs run in, get jacked up by all the traps, and flee. While they flee, with your newly recharged traps thanks to Oath Shot, lay some more. It's probably about time to apply your poison again as well, and make sure everyone gets their doses. Use Whirling defense any time you feel the need, although with Dust Trap usually it's not critical. Keep in mind that Oath Shot recharges all skills, so if you are about to use an Oath Shot and haven't yet used Whirling, you may as well hit Whirling while firing the Oath Shot, as it will be back instantly anyway. For enemies such as Avicara and Losaru that have Pure Strike/Seeking Blade (attacks that will hit you while in Whirling), wait until they run up to you, and Distracting Shot their respective skill. Of course, Distracting Shot is also handy in case you have any pesky healers around.

Notes & Concerns: Using 3 Superior Runes gets your health low, so this build is to be used carefully. You must always be aware of your aggro bubble, and your surroundings. I offset the health hit by a Grip of Fortitude.

Also, I use Poisoner's Strings on the 2 bows I use with this build - 1 longbow, and 1 shortbow. Use the longbow for the initial Oath Shot, and switch to the shortbow as the enemies converge on you.

If you know you are going against an enemy that may give you trouble, hit Troll Unguent after the traps go off to buffer any damage you may take.

I have 9 in Marks so I can use my bows to deal decent damage. Some would dump all the Marks out and use another, probably secondary class attribute in it's place; personally, I just hate shooting at something and watching 1's and 2's pop up. Plus, I have no room for any other skills.

By puting 9 in marks u may get some dmg dealing, but your main source of damage if your traps and degen. So by puting in another sup rune just so u can do alittle more damage that may or may not help seems kinda pointless to me plus your not even using any marks skills. I'd take out the sup marks and save 75 health.
The only real problem I for see is the fact your losing 225 health by using 3 sup runes, and that 225 health would help if your caught in a tough situation. IMO Id run 2 or even 1 sup rune.

I've run something like this, but ive put my attibute point a bitr different.

expertse: 12+ minior rune
wilderness: 12 + sup rune + mask
Marks Whatevers left

True, it's definitely a challenge, and I don't need the marksmanship. Also, Troll Unguent rocks when you have low health! Anyway, I haven't used this build for a while, but it served for some very good solo farming for a long time.

Isn't Troll better when you have higher health? it's supposed to reduce the damage you take with a DoT-type heal..

Actually, Troll at 16 WS is really the same no matter your health - 20 health per second. The difference is with low health, it fills your bar a lot faster. 20 health per second fills 300hp a lot faster than it would 500hp. TBH I don't know if it makes any tactical difference whatsoever, but it looks cool. I've had people comment on more than one occasion "How the hell did you heal so fast?" LOL

instead of using sup marks, why not use the Longbow 13-25 req 6 rec dmg -2 you get from a quest (forget which) and add a poisonous string and your +30HP. Or find a nice low req gold bow or one of the starter greens.

Also not sure if its the norm, but generally when i'm set up for full-on trapping i generally use an Insightful staff with 10/10 and switch between that and bow.

What if you used Poison Arrow instead of Oath shot for the Elite? That would allow an extra skill slot.

I think the oath shot is kinda central to the build, i find that some of the harder enemies may not go down after one set of traps, and having the ability to set down another few really helps. Plus constant whirling def is awesome.

You know I have been holding this in for a long time. A sin is an assassin not a ranger. That is all I needed to say. And whoever brought back this old post..........

By using the search function maybe?
Looks like this Boardtracker software could be good for something after all - although it really amazes me.

IMO, the alternative is this:either the community keeps referring every second person posting a question on this board to the search function; then those posters should certainly be allowed to ask their questions in the old threads they found via searching or the community stops referring everybody and their grandma to that search function; in which case there needs to be a higher tolerance for people asking questions that have already been discussed more than once.
In any case: advising new users to search before posting and at the same time trying to stop them from reviving the old threads they may find in the process is an utterly absurd kind of double-bind.
