The Mirror Self Tips Thread
Horogan Sivoris
Ok, First and formost, the purpose of this thread is referance for those having trouble with the mirror self fight. Please try to avoid making to many posts in the thread. If you must post, please try to wait untill all the possibilities of differen't classes have already been posted, so that people can open the thread, so i'm a "Wa/Mo" and go straight to the Wa/Mo post.
People who are of an unposted class, please start the post about that class. If you have something to add to a class/profesion post, Private Message that person and ask them to add it to their own post, along with credit for it!
That Said, I will now post the Ra/Mo tips I have discovered.
The way I managed to defeat the mirror self was simple, and thanks to my girlfriend for the idea.
Firstly, as a Monk, I had many healing spells. Remove these, and put your points for healing, if any, in Marksman ship and wilderness survival. (Maybe expertese) If you remove your own healing, you remove his healing too.
Equip any damaging ranger skills that you favour. The idea is you need to damage him fast. I used, Poison arrow, Kindle Arrow, Point blank shot, Power shot and Penetrating Attack.
Then Equip healing springs, and Troll Unguent.
And finally, Equip distracting shot.
As you enter the fight, one of two things will happen.
A. you'll get attacked.
B. He'll cast something.
If you get attacked, Head straight at him. If you get next to him, he changes weapon to an axe, rendering his arrow attacks useless.
If he casts something, it's up to you to choose to distract him with distracting shot, Or run up to him.
The idea now, is to start causing damage. Poison him, then spam his ass with damage. BUT keep enough energy for distracting shot. If he goes to cast, distract him. Hopefully, this will distract either his Troll Unguent, or his healing springs. Completely removing his healing abilities.
Now keep your self healed using your healing abilities (his axe can hurt, a lot) and poison/imulsify/power/penetrate/point blank his ass untill he goes down.
Mods If this thread is a success, please move it to the knowledge bank.

Ok here's my one for Ranger/Mesmer. It's very similar to Horogans, either would work just as nicely
Use NO mesmer spells. Equip the following skills:
1. Favourable Winds
2. Kindle Arrows/Ignite Arrows
3. Power Shot
4. Dual Shot
5. Res Signet
6. Troll Unguent
7. Healing Springs
8. Distracting Shot
Attributes: all points into Marksmanship/Expertise/Wilderness Survival
Upon getting into the arena, run right up to the enemy. Again this means he can't use any of the skills except Troll Unguent and Healing Springs. Cast Troll Unguent whenever you lose around 100 hp, and then swap between Power and Dual shot after casting Favourable Winds and Kindle/Ignite Arrows. These will deal plenty of damage.
Healing springs is easily interrupted, and since he's the only enemy, he will never be able to cast it as your attacks are all concentrated on him. Now despite the fact that you crouch to cast Troll Unguent, he will rise up above the ground whenever he attempts to cast it. So whenever you see him rise up (like an elementalist casting), use distracting shot. This way he cannot heal and should go down very quickly. You should have nothing to stop you using Troll Unguent yourself and with 9 or 10 in wilderness suvival, this will give you +8 health regen; more than enough to cope with his damage.

Beat him with my R/E.
Play off the AI. Use firestorm (he will not move) with any knockdowns you have (to stop him from casting) If you see him casting firestorm let him, use this time get a few hits in, soon as it casts simply move five feet in any direction.
He should go down quick.
Note: 12 ranks in fire

My tactic with my Ranger /Necro
4 pet skills, doesn't matter which ones as there won't be a pet.
2 necro sacrifice your HP skills
1 ranger spirit (winter in my case)
1 storm chaser
- start the storm chaser right before you enter and skip the cutscene
- run up the ramp to near the top
- rain arrows down on your mirror, you have the high ground thus your avg arrow dmg tends to be higher and you have a better chance of a critical hit
I used my first attempt to gauge how my mirror would come at me, if he'd come close and then hack at me, or stick to ranger. He stuck to range and I almost won without trying (would have if I had taken more high ground). My second attempt I went further up and rained arrows upon him, only to have him commit suicide just as I launched my last arrow when he sacrificed 20% of his HP (leaving him with like 5) for a useless effect

I had complained openly on a thread about this mission, and ended up coming back having to eat a little crow after beating it pretty easily after a re-think. Here's how...
My primary is Monk. My secondary is Mesmer. I'm a healer monk. Almost all Healing Prayer and Divine Skills. I only use a few points in Inspiration. I really one use one skill (channeling) regularly right now. I didn't use any mesmer skills as weapons, but they were very important.
I reduced all my mesmer skills and dropped my divine some for extra smite points, boosted my smite way up to 10, and used the Bane Signet and Healing Prayers as Jana suggested. I also noticed someone at the guru forum mention starting with a cheapie wand and swapping to a better one. That made me realize the AI checks the weapons that are ready on the Function keys.
So, I cleared out my Storage chest. Started melee with a water (cold damage) wand set on f3. Put a smite staff on F1 and my trusty holy (fire damage) wand on f2.
Set my skills as follows
1-Fraility
2-Mantra of Frost
3-Mantra of Flame
4-Guardian
5-empty
6-empty
7-Bane Signet
8-Healing Breeze
Swapped to the Smite wand immediately and hit with the bane signet. Started out getting hit hard by the initial bane shot and first couple of melee attacks. Got dropped to about half of my hit points. Then the mirror ran himself out of energy with the zeroed mesmer and protection spells. The mirror did use the mantra spells because of the threat of the weapons I had put on my function keys. It was over in less than two minutes. I never even had to move from the starting point. It wasn't really even close.

Profession: Monk/Ranger
Equipped as many Nature Rituals as possible (that wouldn't be helpful for my mirror to use), and some smiting spells (banish/bane sig/holy strike). No healing.
The mirror starts throwing up Nature Rituals while I start right off with my smiting spells. I believe he actually cast them all, which is nice because they have long cast times as well.
Anyway, it took about 30 seconds, he had me at about 1/2 life by the time he died.

primary or secondary mesmers or necromancers can beat him with the following (i've seen it done at level 3..)
tactic in both cases involves not attacking but dodging his attacks
mesmer: max out your domination magic and bring NOTHING but empathy. casti it on him and start dodging his arrows. he will lose health. you wont if you dodge his arrows right. when empathy wears off. don't recast it. wait till he is casting. that way you won't take a single hit(providing you are dodging his arrows)
necromancer: bring price of faliure. it will give him 25% chance to miss and he will take damage each time. the trick is to make him miss every time. so start dodging. again. don't cast it until he is. don't want him to hit you at all. its the whole point of it if you can. blind him somehow. he will take damage and wont hit you at all
and some tips for other professions too.
warrior: bring frenzy. but don't use it yourself
monk: bring life atunement but don't bring any heals. it will lower his damage and not give him any advantage
ranger. poison him and dodge his poisoned arrows. or trap your way to higher ground. his health will be down and you will have damage boost
ele: bring aoe spells. cast them. dodge his spells.

Me/Mo: Domination/Inspiration/Fast Casting/Healing Prayers... but *not* Illusion
(this could be used for any domination mesmer, regardless of secondary)
1. Power Spike
2. Hex Breaker
3. Ether Feast
4. Holy Veil (optional)
5. Conjure Phantasm
6-7 Any fast recharging Illusion *hex* (very important)
8. Any other defensive spell (Spirit of Failure would work)
Pretty much just keep Hex Breaker up the whole fight. I used Holy Veil to buy a bit of time for myself, but it isn't necessary. Your mirror will spend the entire time casting all those illusion hexes (with no illusion skill, so even if you miss, it isn't hurting you much), so just keep spamming HB and it will eventually kill itself. If you get low on health, use Ether Feast, if the mirror uses Ether Feast, use Power Spike.

The trick is knockdown. I equipped my Aeromancer wih a bunch of knockdowns (Okay, only Gale and Shock). He immediately ran up to me (probably to cast Shock). I Shock him first, then quickly used Lightning Orb. Then Gale, then Lightning Strike, then Lightning Javelin. I think he was dead by this time; I don't fully remember what happened exactly.

I can't take credit for this. Someone who ingame is known as Mistress Felbane clued me in to this after I had failed about 6 times with my Ranger/Mesmer. She said she'd lost over 15 times before figuring this out and was publicly offing this tidbit to anyone who wanted to know (for free, so... *Lee Chaolan thumbs up!*)
I had been trying to finesse the fight by dodging arrows and inturrupting his Troll Unguent, while duing damage almost exclusively with Chaos Storm.
The trick is to equip all bow-related skills and then run up close to him. I used
1) Read the Wind
2) Kindle Arrows
3) Penetrating Shot
4) Power Shot
5-7) other damaging bow attacks
8) Whirling Defense
Both times I fought him (I went back to get the bonus), he started with Kindle Arrows. I ran in and matched his Kindle Arrows. He switched to an axe and couldn't use any skills (and kindle arrows was no longer applicable). He never seemed to use Whirling Defense, so it is apparently safe to bring it along. Just alternate between Penetrating Shot and Power Shot to beat the bonus time limit.
My Attributes are set at:
Expertise: 7+1
Marksmanship: 7
Wilderness Survival: 9
Domination: 10
Inspiration: 2 (throwaway points)
I didn't even bother adjusting these, and I still (though just barely) managed to get the bonus. Boosting Markmanship to damage-oriented levels would've made it much quicker. Also, my bow is a 12-21 Longbow with +10% damage and -2 damage received both during a stance, and 20% customize. So there's plenty of room for improvement as far as DPS goes.

When I took my R/E in against him, I equipped Conjure frost and Iron Mist, and that's it.
Conjure Frost - All your damage is cold
Iron Mist - Target is slowed but can only be hurt lightning damage
I just plucked away at him while 90% of his damage didn't do a thing.

Dargon's trick for the Rang/Necro worked great - BUT - i used a different spirit...
The Winter spirit made the mirror hit me as crits even though below me almost every time for some weird reason. I think i used quickening zephyr.
But it was a great tactic to use.

For anyone that has Necromancer, I've found an amusing way to win is equip Dark Aura, Touch of Agony, Dark Pact, and.. uh.. Death Nova.
Even if you lose, the mirror has taken enough damage that your Death Nova will take him out.
Which, as far as the code is concerned, is a GOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL.
<10 seconds.

Hey, I'm just wondering. If you go into the fight with everything unequiped, and then equip it, will your mirror self have those same items? If not, then for most professions I'd recommend going in with nothing on, and then equiping armor from the crafters that blocks your more powerful attacks. Example would be:
Fire Elementalist goes in, with nothing equipped(except skills). This means the mirror has no def, no + to skills(if you already have runes on your armor or some such). Then, you equip Pyromancer armor, and you have def, +def against your own fire spells. You cast your fire spells on him/her, do a lot of damage and those same skills on you do less damage.
I'm not sure if this is already covered, I sort of need to get off the comp so I don't have time to read all the posts above...

Heres my method as a Ranger/Monk. Note: My monk is just for res, I'm mostly ranger skills.
Skills to bring: Firstly, bring apply poison, troll unguent, and distracting shot.
As for the other slots, bring as many Spirits as you can.
Not enough spirits to fill the slot??
Bring traps then, make the mirror waste even more time.
All you have to do is apply poison the first thing, and poison him with the first arrow. If he starts casting spirits, just keep on damaging him. Keep in mind to keep poisoning him to ensure poison stays on him.
When he starts using apply poison, or troll unguent, decide for yourself, Do you want to stop his poison or his heal. Use distracting shot to stop him. Sometimes he will cast apply poison followed by troll unguent, depending on his life. So its safer to try to take out troll unguent if your health regen from troll is strong. Health regen can and will fight back the poison as well as healing some health.
Either way, you will outlast him because you can poison him AND heal yourself. Not to mention you pump in additional damage while he is busy casting all those nature rituals, 5 seconds each. 4 Rituals is 20 seconds gone. Plus, you gain the benefits from the spirit as well since the area is quite small.
If you bring traps, not to worry, he will set traps, but then again, you are just using your bow, no need to run towards him, and he also stays using a bow. Wasted him time setting traps.

Studio, I must admit, I forgot to give you credits for the Death Nova idea (thought it was ally only), but the Sacrifice thing was already in my strategy, so I actually took yours and made it more readable, and extended upon it.
So if anyone makes a compilation, credit both me and studio for that.

ok im not sure if this was some bug or if it actually works but it worked for me and is worth a try. after a few tries with my ranger/elementalist i accidently found a way to beat the mirror self that just seems too easy.
i dont remember exactly what armor i had but all of it gave extra protection against elemental attacks. i know some of it was druids armor.
now all i did was equip ignite arrows and whatever else you want. he will use it and cause his arrows to do fire damage but because of the high resistance to elemental attacks the arrows had absolutely no affect. so i just sat there shooting until he was dead. seems too easy but its worth a shot.
