Firstly, StueyG's pricing is correct:
The shadow staff is worth at most 5k if sold as it is (regardless of its skin) while a successful salvage of the Insightful Staff Head would fetch between 10-15K on the market easily.
As for the smiting staff, it is in my humble opinion that the only thing of value there is the Staff Wrapping of Fortitude +29 health which can easily be sold for around 10K as most monks prefer single-handed smiting rods.
Now, for a little rambling... With regards to the valueing of items on this forum, I guess the problem here is that most of us look through so many requests for PCs that anything less than perfect is either merchant fodder or to be salvaged for upgrades. For example, I am so sick and tired of seeing PCs for Storm Bows, Horn Bows, etc that I now consider anything without a damage mod of +15 always or 15^50 as merchant fodder - hence my having stayed away from PCing bows for the past week.
However, for those who do not wish to strike it rich quickly but intend on building up their reputation as a trustworthy and respectable trader, here's a tip:
First of all, although the prices of greens have dropped due to the the introduction of new green items as well as the regular supply of collector's items by certain players, there is still a market for gold items out there regardless of whether they have the necessary or perfect base mods. All one has to do is hang around Ascalon City for half an hour or so and watch the trade (and local chat) channel.
Secondly, do not be greedy...This is especially so in Ascalon City where most players are beginners or low levels and have very little cash; so be nice and don't fleece them of all they've got! Keys to chest that offer max dmg gold items costs between 600-1.5K... If you feel that the item you have is difficult to unload, then let it go for around 1-2K. As long as you recover the cost of the key or time spent farming, there is still a small profit to be made. Remember, we started out the same way as well.
Thirdly, if you really think that your item is not worth spending half an hour or so of spamming in any of the cities, give it away... You can make a lot of friends that way and build up your trade relations.
Finally, ask yourself whether you would use the item if you had such and such a profession before selling it. The best way to sell something is to know what the buyer wants and whether he/she will be able to fully utilise the item that you have for sale...
Btw, StueyG is also right about the older greens from Grenth's and Sorrow's Furnace... I've given away a few these past couple of weeks...
