Necros aren't as weak as Xeroxz says they are. I'm still alive when most of my team has been ripped to shreds by enemies. Necros have powerful healing spells that can make them pretty tough to kill.
Necros can also dish out a lot of hurt in fights. Skills like Spiteful Spirit, Desecrate Enchantments, Mark of Pain, and Suffering (all curses) can quickly take down large groups of tough mobs.
They're primarily support casters that augment the damage dealing abilities of allies. Blood magic skills damage enemies while healing the necromancer. Curses can quickly deal a lot of damage to enemies or soften them up with health degeneration and negative conditions so warriors can finish them off easily. Death magic mainly revolves around minions and their healing, but skills such as Soul Feast and Consume Corpse can keep your HP and Energy up in a fight. Sould Reaping governs no skills but is in my opinion one of the best attributes in the game. You probably know already that each point you put into it gives you one point of energy when a mob in the area dies. That may not seem like a big deal, but even if you have 5 Soul Reaping it really helps in a fight. While allies are sitting around waiting in a fight for their energy to recover you've got a full energy bar and can keep casting. Even better, when you're a minion master and allies are constantly dying around you, your energy supply is nearly endless.
The most popular secondary class for Necromancers is Mesmer. This is also the secondary class I use. Many people use health degenerating Mesmer skills in combination with necromancer health draining and absorbing skills to quickly sap an opponent of HP while keeping up the Necromancer's health.
Personally, I don't put any points into my Mesmer skills. I only use Epidemic and Archane Echo from my Mesmer skill list. I use Epidemic to spread conditions and Archane Echo to double up Spiteful Spirit and deal more damage.
If you want to try it out, this is the build I'm currently using:
Enfeeblement - (Curses, Weakens target)
Rotting Flesh - (Death Magic, Diseases target)
Epidemic - (Mesmer, no Attribute, Spreads target's conditions to near enemies)
Consume Corpse - (Death Magic, teleport to random corpse location and steal health and energy)
Soul Feast - (Death Magic, steal health from closest corpse)
Putrid Explosion - (Death Magic, nearest corpse explodes, damaging enemies)
Archane Echo - (Mesmer, no attribute, Duplicates a skill, I usually duplicate Spiteful Spirit)
Spiteful Spirit - (Massive damage to a group of enemies, every time target attacks)
16 Curses, 12 Death Magic, and 10 Soul Reaping
All the skills that consume corpses doesn't impress Minion Masters much, but if there isn't one around, let 'er rip. With 10 Soul Reaping and Consume Corpse you shouldn't ever run out of energy.
Hope this helps!
