Considering GuildWars - Question(s)

Hi guys.

I've been playing WoW for a while. It's fun, but I'm starting to get to a point where I have to be on a heck of a long time to get anything worthwhile done. At this stage of my life, that's just not going to work out for much longer.

I was wondering, how is GW for the more casual gamer?

I suppose this is a mroe basic question, but do you all honestly have fun in this game ? :-).

Thanks :-)

I have oodles of fun in GW. I think I've logged somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1800 hours so far, and there are still tons of character combinations for me to tinker with.

You can play GW casually - that's what makes the henchies so darn attractive. They're ready to play whenever you are, and they won't make snide comments if they don't see you for a while. If you join a guild, you may or may not have some problems keeping them happy while being a casual player if it's a guild with lots of guild interaction planned.

And welcome to GWG. As a welcome-wagon comment, try the search function at the top of the page. There have been several threads started by potential players asking for game feedback or comparisons to WoW.

EDIT: Realized I was a little low on my estimated hours in-game.

Guild Wars is definitely for the casual gamer. It's very easy to play for an hour at a time, and maybe once a week, and not miss out on much. You can PvE, you can PvP, and you won't be "behind" anyone due to the level caps and the very good items easily accessible to all.

I've also gotten tired of the subsription fee. I can afford it, but it's really not worth the money to me any more.

I've been doing some more research, and GW sounds liek a great fit for me.

You guys will probably see me in there soon.

PvE is casual, you can make a great deal of progress logging in only a few hours a week. The lack of a subscription fee means that you can continue playing even after long periods of inactivity. However, dont expect an MMORPG (at least not one in the generally accepted sense). I've read a lot of reviews about this game which describe it as "boring" and "restrictive" which can only apply if you attempt to judge the game by the amount of MMO staples that it implements.

From a PvP perspective, GW is for the hardcore gamer. Not necessarily in time spent but in the amount of dedication and initiative that is required to succeed in competition. Even this can be approached casually though (if you do not care for the highest levels of PvP).

As far as the "generally accepted sense", I'll just say this. I am certainly not a "OMGUBER hardcore MMORPG veteran gamer". I like having a game I can get on an play with other actual people or solo if that's necessary. To me, GW sounds like it fits that bill perfectly :-).

As far as PvP goes, I'd be perfectly fine sticking mostly with the PvE aspects or taking forever to reach the highest PvP levels. I'm in it for the fun of the experience :-)

theres a ton of stuff to do, i mean i was totally new to PVP since i been going PVE, and now PVP is all i do than farm for some cash. but before all that best thing is to grab a guild, do some PVE quests play around with the charcters...best thing no one has uber armor/uber weapons like in diablo 2 LOD or WoW all armor is the same stats weapons drop so theres not 1 unique, its a balanced game.

I wish other new players could approach this game with your mindset. Sounds like GW really is the perfect game for you.

Besides possible time restrictions and not wanting to pay a subscription, that mindset is probably a big reason WoW became the wrong game for me :-)
