The Mistery to a rangers secondary profession
Dedric
I know there have been many posts relating to this but none seam to fit what i want. at the moment i have been changing my main char a ton but i love rangers and have a lv 10 ranger/monk but can't choose if this is actuly helpful to me past being able to rez henchies or my team. my ranger is going to end out being for damage and experiest(sorry not looking at anything and can't remeber it) and willderness.
so really my question is what is the best secondary class for a ranger if you aren't really going to put atra points into it to make the skills better just what would have the best inate skills for a ranger looking to do a lot of damage.
sorry its not very exact but can't find what i'm looking for and hope somone can help

You just have to find something that fits into what you're playing. Currently my ranger is working in the Underworld and i've switched my secondary from warrior to elementalist. This is purely for Ward of Melee which allows players within it's ranger to evade 50% of the attacks. One of the more crucial spells for this area with such hard hitters.
I think for rangers most secondary classes are just that. Secondary classes. You'll only pick 1 or 2 skills that you need dout of the set and use them. In your case if that's rezzing and a few quick heals, so be it.

Monk is generally considered the "best" secondary for a "True Ranger". The Ressurection and random healing spell, depending on your tastes, is useful because it can help you keep your party going.
Personally, I play a Ranger/Elementalist. Right now I only use Armor of Earth, which is a life saver in some situations. Armor helped me solo three missions (on accident, hah), but beyond Divinity Coast, it starts to lose its usefulness. When I can find it, I will use Conjure Lightning, but until then, I'm not using anything else.
It really depends on what niche you want your character to fulfill. If you want to be that extra healer and ressurection agent, Monk is what you want.

Some Rangers choose mesmers, since many of them go with helping against anti-casters. Some of 'em pick it for epidermic to go along with their apply poison. That's just to throw something to look at onto the table, although personally I've not much experience with playing a ranger myself.

I play a ranger/elementalist, fire based. It's seems to be very effective as I can act as an AOE dd if there isn't a primary elementalist in the group.

I'm a R/W, found out having both melee and ranged attacks aint working and am looking to change my second profession. (it's said that it can be done later ingame and since I'm lvl 17 I don't feel like starting over)
Untill that time I'm a pure ranger.

I play R/Me and so far the mesmer side can be very broken(with 1-3 skill slots used) in Exploring, Missions, and quests but it needs you to actually put stats into at least 1 Mesmer stat. I haven't tried it in PvP yet with it but I have come across situations in Missions that have proved similar to some extent. You can go 1 of 3 ways and be very useful either anti-melee(dominion/illison stats), anti-mage(dominion/illision stat), or runner(illusion/wilderness survival). So far i haven't been able to find anymore uses for R/Me, at least not any that didn't make me feel like I wasted a Skill slot for whatever I may be doing.

Don't know if I'd recommend the Ele unless you want to spend at least some points on the attribute you plan to use. Their spells use up a lot of energy quickly, usually have long cast and recharge times and none of the glyphs will help your Ranger skills at all.
As was mentioned earlier, you may want to give Mesmer a look. It offers some good signets, interruptions spells, anti-enchantment/hex spells and energy drains that don't really depend on attribute points to be effective. Imho, if I wanted a second class but didn't want to spend any points on it at all, I'd probably take Mesmer.

One has to recognize that Mesmer spells are meant to be used in combination with other spells/skills/conditions, and aren't as effective when used individually. This is really important to understand about Mesmers.
For example, use Apply Poison and Read the Wind simultaneously, then target someone in the middle of a group - when the target is poisoned cast Epidemic to spread the poison condition to everyone around them... 30 pts, takes less than 5 seconds depending on the bow and distance.
Pin Down the leader of a mob using a bow with 2 sec flight time, immediately followed by Epidemic, and everyone stops in place.
Get a warrior's attention, then cast Ethereal Burden and Read the Wind so that he's 50% slower and you're firing faster, then when Ethereal Burden ends you get 10 energy points and slam him with Point Blank Shot or Penetrating Attack.
Signet of Humility can disable an enemy's Elite Skill for 15 seconds and requires zero energy. That can make a big difference when used at the right moment. Combined with Mantra of Signets, one can disable two or more elites at a time.
Since Rangers are often the targets of spellcasters, any spell/skill that interrupts an action, breaks an enchantment/hex, and/or steals energy from a spellcaster, can be very helpful regardless of the damage done. Leech Signet interrupts a foe's action, and if it's a spell you gain energy.
Anway, there's lots of options with a Mesmer secondary and no attribute points invested...

There are a few amusing R/Me combos. Fragility, Incendiary Arrow, and Tiger's Fury is quite a bit of damage, and can more-or-less be sustained. Rangers with IW are pretty amusing, too. I'm not saying that these combos are sufficiently robust to be generally useful, but they're quite fun to play sometimes.

im ranger/ele as well and i love it. its a great second class.

On your ranger/monk take...did you try running with smiting prayers instead of healing for the team?
The reason I am asking you this is simple. At present moment I am running a level 17 Ranger/Monk. She does quite well on her own. Judge's Insight gets swapped in/out depending upon what area I am running through. If I am not running undead gauntlets I usually swap in Bane signet and/or Banish/Holy Wrath to add some supplimental damage.
As a monk secondary I do ru nwith ressurrect on my bar as standard to rezz party but thats it(no points required for that). I run almost exclusively Marksmanship/Expertise/Smiting/Wilderness (in the attribute order stated of....10/10/7/9....yup a couple runes in there and mask).
The only amusing hangup I seem to have to deal with is explaining to people that though I may rezz them as needed, if you're looking to me for healing, you be better off just dying. I built her soley for damage output versatility. She hasn't let me down. So, try looking at the "darker" side of the monk for a bit and see if it suits you a bit more before you just toss the idea away. And yes, its all about finding what you enjoy using the most. Ijust want to make sure you aren't neglecting the other option of the monk available to you before you do.
