I can't afford to buy them and everyone has such good luck finding them. Is there a certain monster that drops them?

Keep in mind that if you are using henchman, that they are picking up loot too that you don't see.

Dyes are scarce and seemingly random.

I solo'd a character up to 9th level before I went to the academy and didn't find a single dye.

A character before that went to the academy at 5th level partied with a buddy of mine the whole Time and we found 5 dyes between us, one of them black.

I'm level 13 now and so far I've gotten 2 black, 2 silver, 4 yellow, 4 orange, 1 red, 2 blue, 1 purple and 2 green I think.

Dye's seem to be more common in Pre-Searing though. So making a new character and playing him to Post-Searing to get access to the item storage could mean some quick cash.

Yeah, its really luck of the draw. I have two level 7 characters in pre and one has five, the other zero.

I am lvl 13 too and have found around the same amount as you give or take 1 or 2. They seem to run in spurts for me, drop a bunch then nothing for a while ect. For me they seem pretty common in post searing too. I dropped a yellow and 2 silvers in about 15min last night. (no black yet though )

I found that the level MOB doesnt really make a difference in Dye drops. For a while I was killing lvl 3 elemental MOBs just farming for cash. I could solo up to 5-6 at a time without getting hurt too badly. I noticed that I would either see no dye drops in a run or I would get 2-3 per run (killing a total of ~30 MOBs per run). The times that I would actually get Dyes seemed to be fairly rare as well. Actually I didnt get any black or sliver while doing this. I didnt see any silver at all till after Yak's and still have not found a single black dye (and in total collected ~25 dyes before hitting lvl 13).

The key is not using henchmen while farming.

But why farm?

As you gain levels rapidly, you will make countless more gold... even if you share with other or henchies. Waste of time. I can make more money at lvl 17 running with a group of 6 to missions and quests and exploring than I can solo at 13 farming lvl 5s.

Also, I would not worry about dyes too much... by the time you have actually settled on an armor for longer than a day or 2 , you will have so much gold that you will be able to buy it from the vendor, much less other people... which explain th eprice jump of black dye from the vendor to over 2k per bottle.

I've been hoarding dyes and getting them from guild mates. When I have 250 of each I'll think of something interesting to do with each. Still far from my goal and black has been pretty nonexistent.
