Build featuring newest favorite combo!
SnipiousMax
I've been working on getting balanced, workable mesmer build for PvP. I wanted to workout a Caster/Warrior shutdown build. And this is what I came up with, featuring my newest favorite combo!
1. Diversion
2. Wrastels Worry (new favorite combo)
3. Backfire
4. Ineptitude
5. Empathy
6. Guilt
7. Distortion
8. Rez Sig
So far its been a blast to play. It's not too fragile (too dependant on one skill), and its adaptable. I've played it with mixed success (dependant on Party support, as this build will not make or break a team...just compliment it!), but feel it's a decent build. I never realized how good a skill Diversion is. You can essential shutdown one enemy skill every 10 seconds. I love it when I shut down distortion, reversal of fortune, guardian, etc. And most people only see the WW, and spam the fist skill they can to get rid of it...not thinking of Diversion! I love the combo, and I credit the mesmer community for the insight! Any thoughts to make it better, are appreciated!

So long as you're using your elite for anti-war, and since you're the target often, I'd swap Ineptitude for Signet of Midnight... helps slightly with energy management, and lasts 5s longer. The damage from ineptitude really isn't significant anyway.

Yea I've just not got around to capping Sig of Midnight yet...
Mystic Memory
distortion can be diverted?

If they cast it after you just cast Diversion. It's like a million and one shot, but it'll drill ya.

I fought with you a couple of times in RA yesterday. Nice build btw, it was pretty decent at cutting down.
SnipiousMax
I didn't play RA yesterday... Must've been a copy cat.
And Avarre, in light of update how would Ineptitude measure against Signet of Midnight?

For RA or TA...I think Ineptitude is a wee bit better. IMO. If you're willing to fork isome points for Illusion.
In any other case, Signet of Midnight. Since you're Domination based anyways...

Signet of midnight is better at actual shutdown of a warrior, while ineptitude has a high chance of dealing a lot of damage and is preferable if you need to blind a ranger (imo). With SoM you can keep a warrior perma-blinded, with ineptitude it is closer to 50%. Sure, the damage is great, and it is a rare warrior who can stop attacking fast enough to prevent the trigger, but they do exist, and you can't have much in illusion magic anyway since most of the build is domination based.
If you had, say, 16 in illusion, then hands down I would go with ineptitude, but you are probably somewhere in the range of 5-9 illusion so I would go with SoM and let empathy do the work.

Well I was determining which to use if you had to take it as the focus of a build
Obviously for a dom build, SoM is better.

SoM is...sorta useless against a good team. Any good team will call it, and any good team will mend it in a second. Now, when I use SoM, I like to use Enfeeble as a cover condition now that Mend Ailment was nerfed a bit.
Durik
SoM is too easy to counter on a good opposing team, but then again, it can be pretty useful, if it's RA, where there is a little chance of the other team having a decent monk, or a W/Mo with purge conditions. I hate SoM on myself, tis' annoying.

SnipiousMax
I went with Ineptitude initially because you do go up against mend condition alot, and so even if the blindness was removed you still interrupted an attack and dealt damage.

Ineptitude doesn't actually "interrupt" an attack, but if you were saying that the attack misses because of blind...but the same would be true of SoM until the blind is removed (if it is removed).
You may have been confusing it with Clumsiness which does damage and interrupts the attack. I love to combo those two and with empathy on there as well
off topic
the guildwars website skill listing says that at 15 in illusion ineptitude does 82 dmg. hmmm they need to update that. The numbers are correct if you look under the game updates.
EDIT: spelled it coMfusing not coNfusing...

You're right, I missed the part about interrupted attack not being there....Heh.
I'm planning on taking out backfire and adding clumsiness anyway, most caster's are too smart to cast a spell when backfired, and It doesn't work well with diversion. But that would lean the build more towards anti Warrior, and I really wanted to keep it balanced...

Y.T.
backfire on warrior? o my.... and no caster will use any skills till backfire's removed, so its useless i think...
dont think theres any reasons to spend ur skillslot and energy on backfire, but i can be wrong of cos

Backfire shuts a caster down for 10 seconds or until it is removed. You cannot remove it yourself without taking damage or using a non-spell removal. It is a very good skill to, say, toss on a monk while the group pounds on another target.
Bah, just go anti-warrior and have fun farming the sheep...er, paladins, in RA.

Exactly.

This is just like every other warrior hate build in RA/TA. Every single mesmer ive met casts ineptitude, clumsiness, empathy, backfire, and uses distortion. Increasing prevalence of phantom pain + shatter delusions, and increase in diversion/ww use.
SnipiousMax
But does every warrior hate build take backfire?
But you're right, it does contain common combos! I just didn't know it at the time!

This mesmer will be bad in PvP because it has no energy management.
SnipiousMax
I only take this build to RA, most matches go fast enough its not an issue. I carry the +30 energy set to switch to if I do run out. Guilt helps a little, but like I said, its meant for a quick burst of action, not really designed for a long game.
