I'd say, not a waste at all. I put a DM+1 20% on my 20/20 Insightful Bone Staff. I use it a lot and love it to death. Anyway, if I had put it on a Gold so I could try to salvage it later, it would most likely turn into wood so, it doesn't matter.

yeah i think 20% wrap is best to put on collector items also.

As it is right now that is the best MM staff you can buy/make/etc. The wrap alone tends to go for an insane 100k. Where do you think folks are putting that wrap? Certainly not on an Air Staff.
