Just wondering... I'm looking at building a new system with AMD 64 bit and windows xp 64bit... With dual PCI Express Cards of some kind... have not decided yet...

Anyone check to see if there is any significant Benifit from a 64bit system on Guildwars yet? Just wondering if I should bother installing GW on it or leave it on my original machine and laptop...

If u r getting a new pc then yes go for 64 bit 939 socket, But only because when longhorn/vista gets released u will b able to enjoy 64 bit windows then. But if u r gunna run the 64 bit beta version its not the best and getting drivers can b more trouble then its worth. I am not even sure if guild wars will run at 64 bit? & as for 2 SLI graphics cards do u just have money to burn? for the cost of the extra card the difference is definatly not worth it.

Guild Wars will not have any performance boost from a 64bit processor because it is made for 32bit systems... And for the SLI graphics cards, you don't really need that, as Riotact said, the performance boost isnt worth all that money... All games that are currently out there are built for 32bit systems and therefore will not gain any performance boost.

Didn't they make a 64-bit version of Unreal Tournament or one of those popular FPS games?

FarCry is one 64bit enabled game that comes to mind. Play's and looks brilliant!

How will HT CPUs stack up with Vista? Or even true dual cores? Will they benefit more so then single core CPUs with a 64bit OS?

Unless the game needs to address > 4gb of memory you will actually lose performance recompiling it for 64 bits

Yep - Here is the patch for 64 bit. http://amd64downloads.filecloud.com/ut2004.asp

I tried GW on Xp64 bit (trial) and it ran (to me) just as identical to xp32 bit.
The biggest thing is the hardware support for xp64 bit. Now if the game was "updated" for 64 bit, like UT2004, and Farcry, then you might see an improvement.

I just built my new computer like 2 weeks ago. It's a socket 939 AMD dual core 64 bit processor running at 2 ghz, I have both xp pro and xp x64 installed and both run Guild Wars Just fine.

If you insist on buying two graphics cards for SLI (I think it's a waste of money), buy two eVGA 7800GTs. A single 7800GT would work fine.

Side note: stick with 32-bit XP for now, x64 isn't worth the hassle.

GW is not demanding enough to warrent 64 bit or even SLI

kk this was the suspecion I had. I was just wondering if anyone else had tried it yet...

I doubt it will bother wasting my time with vista... I'll likely look to more linux unix solutions... for 64bit...

Exactly! I "try" to get a computer that will be as future proof as possible. I buy one from Dell...then I add ram from Crucial...then I buy a retail Vid Card at the best possible price point. Use it until I start to get fairly sluggesh in a matter of time then do it all over again. I then pass down "my" computer to the next family member...and so on. To many other things in the household that we need over computers to keep spending money on them...like food...heat...water....clothes....etc.

Why buy two 7800 GTs for SLI when one 7800 GTX will do a better for the same cost? Also, you can add another 7800 GTX at a later date and REALLY watch that system fly!

And GW works fine on the 64-bit version of Windows XP. The only issue with Windows XP-64 is its limited 64-bit driver availability. Ensure all the components you buy have 64-bit drivers available before you buy them, or they WILL NOT work. I had to buy a new wireless NIC because the MICROSOFT NIC I have will not have 64-bit drivers...go figure, Microsoft won't even support their own hardware.

sLi is a waste right now as most boards only use 8x of each card. save your money and get either a 7800GT or if you have more money a GTX. but Really save your money, march, 7900 series come out. am2 wont be THAT great only different is it will use DDR2 Memory which intel has been using for how long now? everything should work fine on a 64bit system it just wont use your CPU's full potential.

yes there is a FPS out for the 64 bit platform only....Half-Life 2 came out with one. Now for the main question I think the author of this thread wants a 64 bit platform just for the future and all the great games that will come out for it. As for the dual graphics cards...NO they are not needed for GW but if you want it for future games then HELL yeah you can't go wrong. As long as you have the cash to blow. I think the author is set on the 64 bit and dual cards I think they just wanted to know if they would STILL be able to play GW on their new rig which I would say probably yes.

I still say buy the best SINGLE card you can afford. Two GeForce 6600 GTs cost about the same as a single 6800 Ultra, but the 6800 Ultra will blow those dual cards away in EVERY benchmark.

Well I was wondering what is really required of a system for Vista? Will 4Gb of ram be enough? I heard you need "upto" 8Gb of ram.

I've finally arrived from NDA with most of these items to tell you the truth about this stuff...

Vista will NEED more than 1 GB of RAM, and likely more than 2 very soon.

Vista will run faster on 64-bit.

It will speed up on dual cores.

It is also designed for multiple monitors.

SLI is a great thing. And I can make a pair of 6200s take a 6800 if I get the right ones and spend some time with it. It's all in the setup (and the overclock).

Crossfire ATM if you get 1900s is MUCH faster. I'm on an Xpress board, I'm so converted.

XP-64 has no performance increase and really just plain sucks as far as I've tested.

Vista is sweeeeeeeet. And it runs GW. Fast.

Any other questions?
