Concerning guilds

Yeah, it's pretty expensive at the start to make the capes. You may have to "build up" your cash flow and dyes a while before you can afford it. I belong to a guild, but originally I was going to do my own until I saw how much it would cost for this former n00b to get enough gold!
Another side thought, make sure you get the kits to salvage items you find and don't want. A lot of them will give you iron which will help get you better armor in the post searing stage in Ascalon. Buying iron ignots is much more expensive than finding salvaged ones from unneeded swords, and such.

My 10th level character ranger/monk amassed enough money to buy a guild and a cape shortly after getting to ascalon. Of course I was scrimping and saving (and didn't know what I was saving for at the Time) and for a while afterwards I kind of felt the pinch for money. It's not that bad though. I left pre-sear Ascalon with almost 1000gp without doing any buying/selling.

From ascalon (Pre~Searing) I raised 2k easily on the gargoyles that nest just inside the catcombs. Every one of 'em drops SOMTHING, skulls are worth a decent amount (at this point in the game anywho) theres alot of them in that area and best of all, they dont link. Well, ok one or 2 of 'em do but 95% of em dont.
At that stage of the game quantity wins over quality every time.
