Hey All,

Bought my guild a VENT server 3 months ago and the contract runs out next week. Wow how fast did 3 months go by.

I rate Vent Good but not great. Some lag with dial up. Some echo. Only one of my computers works well with vent. On the plus side I really like the vent window.

Anyone here have experience in comparing Team Speak verse Vent.

We need another server soon so i must decide which way to go.

Thanks ahead of time for any advice.

Teamspeak not only costs more, but doesn't seem to run as good on lower grade computers (though they do advertise clearer sound).

Since your whole problem with vent is some lag and echo, teamspeak would only be worse.

It all depends on what codec's the host is using. You can get some awesome quailty sound using high end codec's. Glad my guild uses one hosted on a guildies personal server.

We've had both over the course of our BF adventures. In general Vent has better sounding Codecs. Seemed much clearer. The Vent client is a little more "low profile" as well.

Vent doesn't compete with a lot of the options of TS though (unless they've updated recently). And the server is accessed by a web interface as opposed to directly editing Vent's .Ini file. All depends on what you are most comfortable with.

Muelon i saw that profile picture before, or maybe it's old or something. When i saw it felt i knew where its from, and im thinking a bad place. But anyway.

Ts to Vent I say Vent. Ts was static for me,and the lady saying "member on" "member off" or something like that. And when you try to record a conversation a "R" shows so theres no sneaky sneaky.

Vent rocks. NO static clean hearing. Global is your friend.

I use both, and while Vent is clearer and crisper, I've found that it does cause some lag spikes and has been known to crash on me at the worst possible times as well as - I suspect - result in various other unhappy events, including crashing me out of the game.

TS isn't as clear, but I've never had any of the above mentioned problems with it.

All of the above problems I've experienced have been on three different computers, including a top-of-the line Toshiba laptop that I purchased a few months ago.

So, IMHO, I'd rather have TS than Vent - since in my experience, TS doesn't kick me out of the game to let me know it crashed during the middle of a GvG or while I'm in HoH.

The profile picture is of my daughter at the Octerberfest in Germany.
She was doing a study abroad program in Ferrara Italy.

As the story goes, 3 dumb blonds (mydaughter and her roomates), show upin Munich without a reservation for a Beer Hall table. You must make a reservation a year in advace.

Any way within 1 hour they were sitting at one of the top Beer Halls with a bunch of US servicmen.

There you have it. Just an innocent picture that is now on my screen saver and that i share with u guys.

Dedicated TS servers cost ~1-2 dollars more than Ventrilo for the same number of slots. This is because TS charges the companies more to have the right to make TS servers.

And I dont know what service gives you a dedicated TS server with that many slots for nothing (I only know 1 person that gives free servers, and he only gives 10-15 slot servers, and only for huge well known clans [100+ members, spanning 3+ games]).

You are probably talking about those free public servers you have to share, that have multiple channels and such.

Average price is ~10 bucks for 15-20 slots for TS, and ~7-8 bucks for the same slots on Ventrilo.

Team Speak Downloads... Server and Client are FREE for non profit gaming communities.
Quote:
Non-Profit Organizations
If you host a TeamSpeak server strictly for non-profit AND you are not a commercial entity then you will not be subject to licensing fees. You must not exceed a total of 1000 slots on a maximum of 10 TeamSpeak servers within your organization. TeamSpeak servers are defined as ANY server upon which a connection is allowed - be it virtual or physical. In addition, you must configure each of your servers to run no more than 100 slots. If more than 100 slots is detected on any of your servers by our automated tracking system, your servers may be subject to review (or suspended) and you may be held liable for ATHP-based or Single Server Use-based licensing fees.

Examples of non-profit entities:
An individual hosting a single TeamSpeak server configured to allow up to 100 slots for their online gaming clan for non-profit.
An individual hosting 10 TeamSpeak servers with 100 slots each but does NOT ask for fees, does not advertise, or receive any sort of compensation or benefits for doing so.
An individual that rents a dedicated server from a hosting company but does NOT ask for fees from clan members AND does NOT rent or share space on their TeamSpeak server to others for profit.
A church or other non-profit organization hosting a free TeamSpeak server for online bible study discussions.
A school hosting one TeamSpeak server over 10 physical machines, each configured to allow no more than 100 slots and is completely free of charge to students, allowing them to receive help with homework for their classes online.
So those companies Reselling TS servers are a rip off... I mean if your a gaming community go host one yourself put a password on it and only give the PW to your guild members and friends. And don't go trying to say you got a guild so big that you have more then 100 people online at a time. Even if you do... Just host a second server and get another 100 slots for free. up to 10 servers... All 100% LEGAL..

Vent is superior. TS quality is either bad or going to lag the hell out of dialup.

Yeah. TS = Pro: very low bandwidth requirements, works well even if you're on dial-up. Con: *really* horrible sound quality, much worse than telephone. Half the time you'll be guessing what the other people say.

Vent: Pro: much better sound quality, about the same as telephone. Con: the server is a bit fiddly to set up and wont run at all on my machine since I got AMD dualcore processor, and it uses a bit more bandwidth than TS.

Skype: Pro: best sound quality, better than telephone, near-HiFi quality. Easy to set up and use. Con: uses a ton of bandwidth, does cause stuttering even on my 100MBit connection(!).

My suggestion: get both vent and ts. They're free. Then use whatever the other guys on your team are using.

I don't know anything about cost, but I like the sound quality of TS at the high codecs, I have a huge bandwidth, and I think the TS interface is superior, although I have no major problems with Vent.

You have to buy / get the right to use TS. Where vent you can grab the server and host it your self. If you getting TS server w/o paying them you running a rouge server.

I dont know what everyone is talking about bad sound quality. if you put the codex at 25.9 it sounds clear as day for me. i can understand everyone just fine. even if they are like 20 ft away and yelling at the mic

TeamSpeak: Easier to use. 99% of the time it just works. It's free. You can host TS on your own box... if you have the bandwidth to spare. It rarely causes lag. The sound is clear at a high enough codec.

Vent: Nice features. Some people just can't get it to work. Has caused crashes more frequently than TS. Sound QUALITY is better. People's voices are more "true" to what they REALLY sound like.

Skype: Crystal freaking clear - but has a limitation to the number of people on a conference call. Can cause some lag as it eats up resources like no tomorrow. (Note: I am usually on TS AND on Skype at the same time, other than loading in to an instance about 1 second after everyone else the game still runs fine...)

If you are worried about costs... share TS with someone (another clan/guild). For a small fee a month, lots of people are willing to create a channel just for you and your group. Find a guild that uses TS for other games that they rent server space for.

I would prefere TS when it comes to GW.

I don't really care what the other persons sounds like during a GvG while were getting our arses kicked and I'm yelling in the mic with no one answering only to find that Vent has once again crashed due to either lag or some other reason.

As for Skype, the clear voice is nice, my connection isn't that great, and like kitten said, it sucks up resourses and bandwith so I wouldn't choose that.

For me, as long as we can hear eachother clearly, no lag and no crashes, I'm happy. So TS all the way

there is actually another option that is not used much. xfire... Xfire has voice chat channels now. and its works similar to TS. except that its push to talk instead of vox... but it does work well. We were so used to TS that it didnt make since to use anything else. We already had all the infrastructure setup for the clan on TS. But I will give you that TS does eat up resources for a good codec... so broadband is pretty much required...

Oh and I should mention the Job listings at ArenaNet and NCSoft for VoIP engineers... Does this mean we could be seeing a in game option soon??? never know...

TS all the way. It's FREE for gamers (don't know where that pay-to-use notion came from) the sound quality is just fine. My guild has been running a TS server for over a year now and we rarely have any trouble with it. If it does go down, there's no interruption in game play.

Tried Vent. but was to much of a pain in the rear to figure out how to use. - I like simple things, dagnabit! Once I did figure it out, I didn't notice that big of a difference in sound quality - only slightly better, IMHO
