Is it illegal to exchange real life currency for in game currency?

Note: I'm not doing this, or plan to do this. I'm just wondering if it's illegal or not.

Probably not illegal, but against the eula. Enough to get you banned if you get caught.

The real question is would you do it even if it weren't against the EULA?

Anyone that feels the need to buy items/gold for a video game using real life currency definately needs question their degree of obsession with the game.

Well I just caught a scammer, trying to get my ectos for 6 plat 6 gold (as opposed to the 6.6k he advertised) but I didn't get screenies of that. What I did get was him telling me he buys gold online in the millions, to help him be able to give his guild members only the best equipment. Now, that's cheating isn't it? I have screenies of him saying this. I want to report him, so I was wondering if that's illegal.

It's not illegal. Again, it is against the End User Liscence Agreement, which means if violated, can result in a suspension or permanent account ban from the game. However, if he truly is buying gold in the millions, that can get pretty expensive, and buying a new copy of the game might not affect him.

Either way, report him. It's always good to get the word out.

Indeed I will. But for now I need sleep, so I'll do it tomorrow.

But doing nothing but farming 8-10 hours a day makes more sense?

Hmmm, farm griffons/hydras/UW/FoW for +/- 10K per hour, 100 hours needed to hit the magical 1000K mark. Not including rares of course. Or, at last check, spend about $55.00 on ebay to hit that same 1000K mark. I know for me that I make a lot more than 55 bucks in 100 hours.

I'm not condoning it, but it seems eveytime you turn around Anet, in their infinite wisdom , has made it even harder to earn a decent amount of gold. Don't even start on the "no one needs more than 10K" crap either. That's a huge load of BS.

Simple fact, players want gold. They want flashy toys. They want to be able to squat in Marhans Grotto and brag that they have a perfect Chaos axe, Fellblade, and FoW armor. Farming 100's of hours isn't desirable to many. Ebay makes it easy. If Anet actually did ban anyone for these practices, I suspect the high end sale forum would be a lot less utilized.

Say what you will but I would get absolutely no pride out of having FoW armor or perfect items if I bought them with money from an ebay gold seller. To me your just an imitator who wants to look like someone who earned his rare items/armor but really took the easy way while others put in the hours, and by the way its too easy to go out and make 40-100k in only a few hours just by watching the screen and using your money wisely. So in my opinion you're breaking the EULA and you are devalueing the items that shouldn't be so common, which for some thats great but I see it differently. Either way thats my 2 cents.

Hmmm, I smell an Ebayer.

First of all, not everyone farms rediculous hours to get huge quantities of gold. Secondly, yes, spending 55 dollars on ebay is worse than farming for 100 hours to get the same gold. At least while farming you're playing the game and having fun. Spending real money to obtain fake money in a video game is pathetic.

I myself have played for 388 hours over the last 6 months. I have over 500k in storage, which is more than enough money than I'll ever need. (I don't feel the need to buy FoW armor for any of my characters, except maybe the Helmet for my warrior). The 500k I made was from selling every crap item i found to the merchant, and I found about 10 items worth about 50 or 60k in that allotted time.

Basically, the people that spend 55 bucks on ebay to get fake money for a video game are pathetic losers, who in their wasted lifetime, probably spend more time sitting in front of the computer than all other activities combined.

Take a look at my guild tag and guess how I earn my money. As for that accusation, you can go fu*ck yourself with a rather large barbed pole.

Oh, ok I get it. Instead of farming for countless hours, instead you run people for countless hours. So while making a stab at people who farm, you're in the same boat. You run people endlessly to obtain gold. I have a couple questions for you...

1. How many hours a day do you play?
2. How many of those hours are spent running people?
3. Do you feel tough by cussing online?
4. Do you actually have any friends outside of your guild wars bubble?

I'm gonna go ahead and answer the obvious...

1. Too many
2. 100% of them, unless I'm cussing someone out or trying to act tough
3. Yes, primarily because I'm quite the opposite in real life
4. YES......no

Where exactly did I say I am, or want to be , the richest person in the game? I simply offered a counter point and you go comletely off tangent with accustions. Not sure wtf your problem is exactly either.

As for game time, less than 2 hours a day normally. I do very littel running anymore as I have almost everything I want in the game now. I don't try to feel tough online, it's pointless, but I did want to make my point back quite clear. Not sure if you get that or not. And yes, I have a large number of friends outsid ethe game bubble. None of my IRL friends actually play GW.

Either way, you're really not worth the bother, nor the warning this get get me. I'll accept it and move on.

In the end buying and selling Guild Wars gold using "real" currency is against the EULA you agree to when you create an account for GW. Breach'ing this EULA can lead to account suspension for a period of time or permenantly.

GW's EULA -> http://www.guildwars.com/legal/users-agreement.php

And since that answer's the OP's question, this thread is closed.
