Ahh... I remember the good old days of being the unfortunate ignorant noob.

The things that stand out most for me are:

As soon as I had cleared pre-searing (which I did as quickly as possible not having much time for 'noob' areas and missing all the skills) I ran out of ascalon straight up the hill and got owned by the two devourers that spawn there. God knows how long it took me to figure out you actually had to have a party to play this game successfully.

Then I have some faint images of my Mo/R (my first character) running around the Kryta area with a bow, bow skills and smite skills. I don't ever remember people spamming chat ordering me to heal them though. Perhaps I had it turned off. Wouldn't surprise me.

Anyway they are two highlights of my Guild Wars noobie career. Now I wonder, what are yours?

I am very much looking forward to being a noob again in Factions

I remember my first character, a Ranger/Elementalist.

I thought the combination of Firestorm and Ignite arrows was the best thing ever.

Pre-searing ascalon for the first character was my fondest memories of this game.

Same here. I think I spent something like 30 hours in pre searing before I decided to take that final quest. The cool part was I had no idea what to expect, and to tell you the truth, the minute I saw the new beat up ascalon, I was disappointed. I miss the pre searing ascalon.

My main character, now a R/Me, used to be a R/W.

I figured: Bow skills for "sniping", grab an axe or sword if any foe should come too close. Oh, and I can use the pet as a tank, too. All about the soloing, but....hmm......damn, only 8 skill slots. And preperations? Take waaaay to long, no use for them :-) let alone expertise. who needs that attribute for crying out loud? no skills for that. ahem. yeah, well, with that kind of attribute, energy and skill management in the beginning I still wonder how I got this far......

My first Char was a Meser, was like im the ownage at the start of game killing things with my conjure pahntasm.

Half way through the game i couldnt kill anything with the degen spells, i deleted him at level 16 for a warrior that actually did damage.

My first character was a Ranger/Mesmer. Ran around in pre not really knowing what I was doing, eventually went to post. You know how Warmaster Tydus gives you a quest and says that Alesia will want to help you out? Yeah, I thought to myself, "Wow, that's very nice of her!"

I may have also actually talked to her.

I'm gonna go hide now.

lol my first character was an elementalist. She didn't make it past pre-searing, or maybe she did, but she certainly didn't make it too far past that.
Then I had a ranger who went all the way.

However my greatest newbie moment had to be that I spent several weeks in pre-searing without realising that there was another section to the game

Ahhh...pre-searing...the good old days...seems such a long, long time ago.

I spent many weeks there with various characters doing all the quests that I could find. After they were done, myself and another newbie spent many more days going across the wall time and time again just to wipe out all the charrs there. They were challenging, dangerous and most of all...darn right scary.

lol yeah the first time I did the north wall I did it with henchie and kept thinking over and over, I'm not going to make this, I'm not going to make this, the new section is so hard. How wrong I was. After a couple of days I had no problem - my ranger was even lvl8 at the time.

My pre-searing was in the kryta, Lion's Arch, during WPE (world preview event); I wore the crappiest armor (thank god they werent that crappy) all the way to maguma jungle wondering where can I find materials for armor crafting. Clearly, I sold every salvageable items without knowing I need to salvage them.

Most memorable was that, Aurora Gate was highly populated. I passed it on 2nd or 3rd run, don't remember... but it was a good fun feeling of accomplishment as of then.

I explored every aspect of pre searing with my first character and still missed several quests. Having some guidence from my brother who made a pre char to help me out a bit, but mostly I was wondering around alone with my necro.

My first character was an Elementalist, which I hated very much.

Deleted him after about 30 minutes of playing.

Made a monk, name Ember Loreweaver (this was in beta, btw.) Finish Pre, and started partying, and fell in love with being a monk. I love how busy I am keeping everyone alive, the feeling of someone saying "good job, Ember" it's just great.

Wow, just thinking about my noob days make me smile a bit. I remember in Pre, I ran with my monk as far east as possable (I was in Ashford, and didn't know about Forst Ranik yet.) I walked by a hill, and saw a huge glowing golden statue. At first I was like "omfg, beautiful. I then pushed alt, and saw that there was a "basket of apples" at his feet. I imediately thought "OMFG, I MUST HAVE THOSE APPLES!"

So I ran for it, a few spider fell, and I took them out with ease. I finally got my precious basket o' apples, and that then is hit me. Something has to be guarding these apples!

I started to walk away, then about 15+ spiders fell from the three tops and the statue. I freaked and started running, thinking to my self "There apples must be expensive, I'm gonna go to town and sell them to whoever bids the most, MUAHAHAH!" In about 10 seconds I died. I couldn't believe it, I had the most wonderful item in the world in the grasp of my hands.

I found myself awake afterwards at Ashford Abby, cursing the damned spiders of the statue! I started spamming in local "Hey, I found a 'basket of apples', is it good, what's it used for?!?!?" No one answered, so I just kept on spamming.

About 3 minutes later, I got a pm saying "stfu nub, those r for quest!!!1"

That one pm to my noob self has stopped me from asking anyone for help in local.

My noob character was a monk with a severe identity crisis uncannily similar to what Alesia sufffers. Yup, a mo/w trying to be a warrior with some healing, and of course since it was a noob char without the nifty monk spells that could make such a thing effective, it didn't take too long before I learned to become a proper (albeit still nooby for a while) healing slave.

So here i was, in the pre searing, with my e/mo, and i cast a enchentment on my friend. suddenly, 1 energy regen was gone. i gouldnt get it back. then freaking out, i cast the same spell on myself. ya, that only made things worse.
long story short, i had a hard time with the whole 2 regen for the rest of the time, and after i zoned, i didnt use enchantments for about a month, untill a friend showd me how to end them

Quite hilarious

My early days...
WPE:
played a R/W thinking: shoot arrows, I like ranged attacking. and warriors are though. I'll be one mean ranger!
Getting severly hurt by the abundant hammer Wa/Mo's (hey, I had no idea how to play a ranger!)
Last hour of WPE: hey, what is this 'Expertise' thingy? Hmm... that is interesting. I had been playing all the way with 0 expertise.

Early days after release:
- Bought a non-max longbow with sundering mod for 15k thinking I would lay the pain on those monsters! Yeah baby!
- spend a week walking in Ascalon area till I found the first mission post
(Hey, I was exploring the game and working hard for my lvl 30 armor!)

In pre-searing I searched for probably 3 or 4 hours for a new skill for my secondary elementalist. Cause 'trainer 1' said: talk to 'the other trainer' and 'trainer 2' said: talk to 'trainer 1'.

I also asked in pre-searing Ascalon where the Hall of Heroes was, I had to get my name all over the place! (still haven't succeeded )

In post-searing Ascalon I asked if someone could guide me to Lions Arch while I was like level 8. Nowadays nothing special, but back then I don't even think there were runners.

When I arrived in Beacons Perch, a guildmate was ahead of me and had already arrived in Lions Arch. So I asked him for directions how to get there, he told me: go west and do the mission, then you arrive in Lions Arch. So I went totally west and ended up in Divinity Coast. You should note that I did this with henchies and pre-searing armour. (How was I supposed to know where to get bolts of cloth?)

to me man i fell like the noobie of this game when i 1st played it,

I done this i played the game made my own guild no1 joined got up to hells with the 27(i think it was 27) armor from Pre (neva knew u could make armor throught it was a waste of time) hey i wondered why i deid so fast, my 1st char was a W/N thinking yeah strenght and soul reaping getting health back but then i found out u have to be a Pry Necro and the fact u only get energy back and some of the energy spells cost to much for the warrior, then i saw some1 telling me about armor lucky i was infused :P hehe and then i got a gold sword changed my char to a w/mo and tried to put the armor back on me and my customized sword tht i also had .

this makes me feel stupid, but im not a noobie no more i have ascended and now im a noob :P.

Thats the sort of thing I enjoyed to begin with , exploring. not knowing what you were going to find around the next bend.Could I find another town? or quest.
Now I have explored the map Its not quite as magical. but you never know if I can just get to that blurry area over there

During the WPE when everyone started as lvl 20 in Lions Arch, or just outside, i kept looking at the blank map wondering if there was a way to go over those mountains :O! Was so happy when i got to Tascas Demise and then Beacons Perch (Dont think it looked the same then as it does now.)

Also during the WPE i spent the first day doing very little damage because i didn't know we had to assign attribute points or where to do it

It has been a long time ago (8 months now?), but I remember it took a long time, so probably 2 or 3 hours.
And I agree, I have done lots of exploring and was always hoping to find that one place which very cool.
I didn't name it in my first post, but I discovered Piken Square and Grendlich when I was in the desert.

I love presearing. My favorite part of the game - it looks so beautiful, the music is awesome. You can solo darn near everything. I think part of the reason I like it is that I first started playing this game I was so excited about and was so entranced by ... in presearing Ascalon. When you go back, you kinda get that feeling you did when you first started playing.

My n00bish note to date is finding a black dye. It was among my very first drops, and was certainly my very first dye. Well, not knowing anything at all about how dyes work, or if you could sell them, I immediately applied it to my Mesmer's vest.

I remember my shock when I heard soon after about the exorbitant prices black dye sold for. And this was back when black dye could sell for 20 or 30, before the economy stabilized.

Ahhhh, me.

Also, after I seared, I didn't do missions for the longest time because I didn't know what they were, and I had no idea why numbers were now floating above peoples' heads. It seemed too strange. So instead of trying something out, I went back exploring.

I remember my first character. He was a W/N, using mainly warrior skills (my brother suggested the necro secondary). I got really good in presearing area, and became overconfident quickly. Once I got into post-searing Ascalon, I freaked. Everything was a lot harder, my armor sucked, I had no money, my sword sucked, and I had attributes setup all over the place. I deleted that guy shortly after, and didn't play again for over a month.

Sadly, I also recall selling dye to the merchant, and being upset when they dropped cause they were only worth 1g. (Not sure if I had a black with that guy or not, but knowing my luck, it wouldn't suprise me...)

My first was a Ranger/Elementalist who used a combination of bow attacks (mostly the 10-energy ones) and Lightning Javelin. He died good in post-searing.

I enjoyed the (graphical) environment of pre-searing a lot more than post, but the player environment was/is ridiculous - not that it's any better afterwards. I was actually glad when the final cutscene started and the sky rained fire and huge burning crystals of doom. Unfortunately, the video failed to live up to my expectations, as it didn't show the hordes of naked dancers by the gate being scoured from the face of the earth.

The thing I reember most is having no money to try to buy the good stuff. I was trying to do all quests, and make oney finding items, but still was always broke. That is until I found a black dye after playing for about a week - I sold it too low (5K), but than it seemed like all the money I would ever need.... Also I remember not knowing the cool lingo - WTB, WTS, LFG, etc., etc.

Memories....

I had done a few quests, and decided to take that one from Tydus. Didn't pay much attention to the "leave all behind" statement. Think I was about level 4 at the time. Never enough money, buying armor one piece at a time. Learned a lot since then.

My seventh character is staying in pre, just to help others in my guild. Got all of pre mapped, including north of the wall, and know my way around the catacombs. Pre is so ....... serene.

strider's newbie moment:
i got a black dye drop in pre-sear and used it on a crappy shield. then i used dye remover thinking i could get the dye back to re-use. since that didn't work, i eventually sold the shield to the merchant. when i finally got to post-sear a few days later, i saw that people were buying black dye for 8-9k at the time.

i cried.

LOL, same here.

Having seen Ascalon City in ruins, I headed straight out to find the other places. Wandered around the destroyed Ashford Abbey and then headed off to find Fort Ranik. When I got there, I didn't understand why player's profession and level were floating above their head. I thought it was a bad load/download and went in and out of Fort Ranik afew times to reload and see if it would fix itself. Since it didn't I left quickly and was going to send ANET a bug report. Luckily someone told me about mission outposts before I sent anything.

my first time going to see ranger nente i walked over a bridge and zoned. the new zone was loaded with devourers and such and i wasn't sure how to get around them without aggroing them. i was a low level and i didn't want to die, so i spent a long time trying to find a way to nente unharmed before i realized that these buggers don't aggro!

I can remember the days where you would spend several days getting to Kryta as a Warrior using sword, then be impressed by an axe warrior and having to make the decision to free up refund points to invest in axe. Prior to Anet getting rid of the refund system, a bonder was a special friend indeed. These days people see a monk and think, 'Great! A healer, protector or bonder. Whatever we want!' Do we think experience or 'specialisation' has suffered?
