I see some staffs/focus items require smiting prayers and such I just haven't come across any of them yet and would like to

"Smiting Prayers" is a Monk attribute!! You have to put points into the attribute to the lvl required to use the item!

No. You DO NOT have to have the pre-requisite to USE the item. It will let you equip it, and even give you a partial amount of the listed bonus (based on how far off you are from the requirements).

What the number tells you is how many points you need (including modifications) in a particular skill to use it to it's full listed values.

Quick example... you have a staff that needs 6 smiting. it lists the damage at 7-12 and energy +4. IF you only had 2 points in smiting... you could use the weapon, but it would do, like 3-7 damage and only give you like +1 energy.
