Just noticed you can fight him again for a bonus amount of exp if you kill him in under 50 seconds.
I'm a ranger/mesmer.
any advice on killing him quickly?

Bring favorable winds, a buncha bow attacks. When entering, the dopple will cast favorable (takes time). Run right up to him and start shooting at melee range. Dopple will use axe (no skills for it though!) and you can rip him apart with power shot etc (that is boosted by spirit).

well if you can, change 2.profession to warrior and put only frenzy on (don't use it yourself...) easiest thing ever!!!

Killed it four times now in under a minute and never saw a chance for a bonus. Is this new, or did I miss something?

You get the bonus exp automatically. Ascending is a prereq to changing secondaries so that's out of the question.

dgb beat me to it. You can't change your secondary until you have beat your dopple so your stuck with what you have. Trick to the dopple is bring a lot of useless enchants it will waste its time casting while you attack. for Mesmer I brought a skill (wish I could remember the name of it) that sacrifices a percentage of health that gets returned after a certain amount of time. Well I had my dopple killed before it could get that health back but by using that she knocked her health down a lot for me.

The original post seemed to indicate that you could fight the doppelganger a second time for an extra bonus if you beat him under 50 seconds. Did that with four characters, got the huge xp bonus, and went right to Dragon's Lair -- no mention at all of fighting a second time, unless I misunderstood the post.

He could change his second profession if he has already beaten the doppleganger once and wants to beat him again, under 50 secs this time, for the bonus.
Mister Overhill, if you took more than 50 seconds to kill the doppleganger, the exp points for the bonus are still up for grabs, since you can fight the doppleganger an unlimited amount of times, you can get it on later tries.
Mavrik, that's Illusion of Weakness. I've never thought of it as a doppleganger killer, but it surely would work perfectly. Great idea.

Any mesmer is easy. Hexbreaker, Backfire and Empathy. CAst hexbreaker before you leave then immediately backfire and empathy. Jus dodge his arrows and cycle through those spells keeping hexbreaker up as much as possible.

Yay I just finished this yesterday. Only thing confusing me is that there's no indication for getting the bonus. The firt time I killed him was in JUST over 50 secs, but I went back and killed him in between 35-45 seconds twice, but nothing different happens. It does flash Hit "L" to see your update, but the video starts too quickly to check. 
Is there any way I could find out at all? The only title I ever really hope to get is the mission one, would be so sad if it's suddenly gone kah-poot
(And he was Oh so much easier than the three missions. Weirdness... )

The quickest way to do this is with a good ol spike. Kindle Arrows(put this up just before you enter the arena) + Dual Shot + Savage Shot works just fine. Bring serpents quickness to speed things up a bit. Your doppelganger is too dumb to use the skills in the proper order so it should be easy.

Bring Illusion of weakness/Empathy/Backfire/Distortion ....
drop both backfire and empathy on him... then use distortion while you kite...he should be dead well under the 50 sec margin

I just finished the elona reach misson today, went back to augory rock and went right in to the doppleganger. Forgot to change my build around, and I play a fire elementalist, so I had all my damage spells. But basically, he cast meteor swarm first, so I avoided it, hit him with my meteor swarm, firestorm, and fireball and he was basically dead. Must've been less then 10 seconds. Was super easy. Was my first ever attempt at this as well.
