Why Don't More Rangers Care About Their Pets

I play a ranger now, and I have a pet cat name Nooblets. When I go on a mission with nooblets I am always keep him healthy with mending and infuse health. It breaks my heart to see other rangers who use their pets as meat shields. I shed a tear each time Nooblets dies and pray to Dwayna that it doesn't happen again. He is a fun companion and a loyal friend. I love you Nooblets.

I...

Um...

I kind of see where you're coming from? When I originally had a pet I made sure he was kept healthy, though clearly not as well as you do. The fact is that it isn't always practical to keep them alive. Mending is a pretty extreme way to keep them kickin'.

Though you have inspired me to go get a pet for my ranger. I'm pretty sure I got rid of mine a while back... I'll even keep him alive.

The other day in the wilds my pet Nooblets saved me from certain death. I was at zero health and the Troll killing me was about to finish me off. Out of nowhere Nooblets tackled him with no regard for his own safety. I was so pleased with him that i dropped a half eaten mass for him. Unfortunately, another team member picked it up. "OMG, that was for Nooblets!" I told him. Luckily I had another.

I didn't realise that mending worked on a pet... As for why? I don't know, but Alesia will try to keep your pet healed and while, as a monk, the team is priority, the pet comes straight after, if I have the energy. Never understood why rangers don't heal their pets (other than certain stages of evolution) and why monks don't bother to at least partially heal pets (short of there being an insane number of pets in the team)

btw, my Ranger loves his Lynx and keeps her as healthy as he can.

With my pet - Lego Lass, I do what I can to keep her alive. But sometimes, it just doesn't work out. I've developed the habit of using Comfort Animal after every battle as a way of petting her in appreciation for a job well done.

How do you know your linx is a she. I zoom in but can't tell the sex of Nooblets. I just assume Nooblets is a "he" because of how tough he is and how he hates the color pink.

well....from a different point of view....

in PvP, pets are only useful if they deal damage. if you have no way to keep your pet alive, or to res it, you're hamstrung in terms of damage, and you've got some useless skills on your bar on top of that.

in terms of PvE, my own opinion is that pets ARE meat shields. to me, they're meant to draw aggro while you plink away with your bow. i guess in those terms it's good to keep your pet alive.

My first character when I bought the game shortly after it came out was a ranger. I've always had a pet, at first it was a Stalker, then a dune lizard, then finally a spider.

Every time I'm adventuring, I always have two skills set aside for my pet spider Minka.

But Minka sure is ungrateful. She never comes when I call, she doesn't sit still, and dies in sometimes glorious ways. But, like any pet, you have to love them anyway.

I'm not sure if ANet ever changed it, but pets used to gain experience even when dead, which had a very big influence on how owners treated them. In addition, in order to control their evolution, some owners would purposely let them suffer.

Having a pet spider used to be unique, if I joined a PUG everyone would remark about how cool Minka was. Now, at least half the rangers I run into have them, and it's just not that big of a deal anymore.

But still, pets are about the coolest thing ANet did for GW.

What dye mix is that? Anyway, I would care about my pet if it had iq higher than that of a house plant. As it is, I merely use it as a weapon, a tool to get the job done.

'She' is a she cause I named her with a female name... and I'm used to having female cats.

Of course it can't, it was just a gesture...
If you're not going to be an all-out beastmaster, bringing a pet hurts more than it helps. And with some of the skills Factions will introduce, pets should be much more useful; no longer will you have to split up into 4 attribute lines!

funniest thing I have read so far about pets. You do realize they are VIRTUAL pets and FEEL NO PAIN when they die. They also get resurrected easily and come to life with no penality. You are sounding more and more like that Gaile who crys about silly things like virtual pet abuse.

it depends on the build your playing...

when I play as a beastmastery ranger, offcourse I will keep my pet alive else I can't use my skills

but, if I play as a barrager, or just bring my pet as a defensive skill well then he dies alot... its just a part of the build

I once tried making a Mo/R build where the monk was simply there to support the pet throughout the game, to see if it was at all feasible.

It was not.

S E V E R got his eldar spider 'Archie' about a month ago and I've been far more inclined to take the pet along with me for non-crucial missions. I still get the occasional 'OMG, who's spidr is that? It roxss'. If anyone wants to try an 8 team/8 pet rampage around Perdition Rock sometime I'm up for that...

I played a beastmaster for a time and Rowena was spoiled rotten! Only the best cuts of meat for her, a nice fluffy bed and her own savings fund! Seriously though, I always made it one of my first priorities to keep her healthy (and alive). Of course, being a beastmaster tis what I was supposed to do anyway, right?!! Sadly, both ranger and Rowena have gone onto a better life now compliments of the almighty delete button.

I have often wondered at the virtual pet abuse. I HATE it when Lizzy dies, maybe that is cuz I usually have four slots devoted to that big lizard...but I also hate that when it dies (I don't think that lizards have a gender) I am blacked out for 7 seconds!! or however long it is. Good crap that is a long time to be BO'd during a fight!

It also bugs me when someone (usually it happens with 3 or more) brings a pet into a mission and lets it die on the first fight AND leaves it dead for the whole mission. Honestly, why do they even bother bringing it to keep it alive for 39 seconds of the first fight. We'd all be so much better off if they brought a rez or something instead of their pet...

And as I like having my pets hearty (it´s the size that counts ) then they usually die in the process of training them if I´ve just got a new pet while already being lvl 20 myself. And my skillbar is also so crowded with other skills that comfort just doesn´t fit in... I really have to think about a beastmaster build in Factions, just have to see what new pets it will bring us.

As I like having my pets Dire (it's the size and damage that counts), they tend to die unless I make an effort to keep them up. I make sure to feed them in excess (via Predator's Pounce ) so that they keep up their strength. lol

For the disbelievers who are so certain only hearty pets get huge:

The regular sized pet next to my necro:

The dire sized pet next to my necro:

The two pets side-by-side (what a pain to get that screen...):

well thats a little unaccrate in a way since it seems your necro is the shortest size possible. My ranger is medium size and the dire strider is only a little taller than her. Oh and I do not use my pet anymore sinced my skillbar is used for better degen and damge dealing skills.

I dislike my pet with a passion because she takes up 2 slots on my skill bar.

Cant remember the last time I used it in pve, it's just a waste of slots. Unless you're in one of those b/p tombs teams.

Some people actually attempt to *role-play* which is, sorry to say, a futile effort in this game. I try to keep my pet alive too, especially in PvE, since there is some semblance of role-playing there.

In PvP it's all about practicality/effectiveness.

Most people wouldn't know role-playing from roadkill, so they don't care about their pets at all.

Uh... it doesn't matter what size my necro is (actually slightly above average height, like all my casters) because she was simply used as a measuring tape. You'll notice the first two pictures are both there for a reason: one shows her versus the regular Moa, and the second shows her against the Dire version. That way you have a frame of reference for comparing the two. I'm not trying to say that all Dire Moas are going to tower over your character; I'm saying that Dire Moas are gigantic compared to the level 3 guys wandering around, just like the Hearty ones are.

Since that seems to be difficult to understand, let me help with another image. Here I have taken the two previously posted images and laid them over-top one another such that both images of my necromancer match up. Clearly, the Dire Moa towers over the normal Moa.

How could you talk like this? Nooblets has feelings. One time after he killed an ettin, I used comfort animal and he brushed against my leg while purring. I love you Nooblets.

Kurt, that reminded me of my pet lizzard my mesmer has... the stupid thing keeps rubbing up against his legs! (yeah, he's not a nice person so has some problems with pets).

As for my lynx... the ranger got deleted last night including the pet (though I was sad about the Lynx).

My warrior started out with Ranger secondary for the pet, somewhere around Kryta I got rid of my pet because I just couldn't handle the penalty of my skills being disabled for several seconds (twice).

and off course the emotional drama of having my pet die time and time again.
