Lord Cooper...By Jove I think you've Got it...
That makes sense to me now...and I had some coffee. Why get 4x512Mb then over 2x1Gb? Price?...doubt it. That would leave you open for another 2x1Gb later on when Vista is out to get 2x1Gb at the start.
I need a tech heads opinion ;-)

Hold up.
Your gfx card is 190$.
WHY would you NOT spend an extra 9$ for a good X850XT?

I still wanna know why it's not a 6800 GS, but that's me.
4x512 will hurt system performance. Get 2x1024. I've tested with both. The AMD64 memory controller still has a hiccup with 4x512, but it's far better than it used to be. Not only that, but 4x512 is twice the chance for instabilities if they will show up. Just my two cents...

Also, Serafita Kayin made some good points. I didn't think of more physical ram could be more of a chance for error problems. I also know a whole lot of nothin' about AMD chips.

Asus A8N5X is nice, I have one.
I reused old hard drive, monitor, and optical drives, and got
AMD Athlon X2 4400+
eVga 7800GT
2 GIGS ram
etc, for under $1100

IIRC he is wanting a whole new pc.. not just replacing one so he doesnt have the monitor keyboard mouse drives etc to re use. so add all that to your price along with winxp and you find you are ridiculously over budget!

I would get 2x 1gb sticks of ram, because you never know when you will want to upgrade, or when you will need more ram, who knows what Vista will want.

Yeah 2x1 is nice, more so however if it's dual channel. I'd rather have less RAM with dual channel than more RAM without it. I dunno about going with 4x512 though, as someone earlier states, that's just more stuff that can go wrong. If you really want two gigs, regardless of if it's dual channel or not, I'd recommend going with 2x1.
