games hangs
express4520
hi,
i have been experiencing random hangs while playing guild wars. as far as i can tell, it does not appear to be related to anything specific i do in the game. occasionally, the screen will freeze for a while (a good 15 seconds or more) and about half about that the time the game will then play normally. but the other half the time it just hangs and the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive so i have to hard reset the computer. but here's the interesting part, after a full reboot, for some reason my internet connection is non-functional. but after another reboot, everything is fine. here are my system specs if it helps:
windows xp home sp2
asus a8v-e deluxe motherboard
amd64 3500+ winchester processor
2x512MB corsair xms memory
6600GT video card
marvell-yukon network adapter (on motherboard)
antec 380W power supply
all components are properly cooled
i run virus and spyware scanners regularly and i appear to have no malicious software on my system
i run guild wars at 1024x768 with all details at max
i run guild wars with no background applications other than what windows loads automatically
also, i have not had any problems with other games/software crashing or hanging etc. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Quite obviously, your PC should be running this game with absolutely flawless quality.
Out of curiosity, did you try opening TCP port 6112 in your firewall? Not making an exception for it has been known to cause connection/stability issues before.

You're welcome.
By the way, which video drivers are you running?

it just crashed again after about an hour of playing. this is so annoying
i am using forceware 71.89, which i believe is the newest.
i submitted my problem to the official guild wars support, perhaps they can help

Firstly, I'd like for you to do the Usual Stuff™ when trying to find a problem...
1.) Unless you've done it recently, defragment your hard disk. This just possibly solved an entire issue with Guild Wars hanging in another thread.
2.) Scan for spyware, again. I reccommend using both Spybot and Hijackthis.
3.) Reinstall the Guild Wars client, this can solve a surprising number of problems.
If there's still problems, please try the following...
1.) Download this. It's a fantastic driver cleaner from Guru3D.
2.) Install these drivers. In my opinion, they are the absolute best for the 6600GT. I've never had a single problem with any game while playing with these drivers.
If even that doesn't work, report back and I'll give you more tasks.

Whhoo, just say yes ma'am to her and do as she says. She's in a feisty mood now...

I've had a similar experience.
Playing the game in a window, roughly 1000x800. After an undetermined amount of Time (way more than enough to eliminate thermal issues) the game will hang on me for roughly 15 seconds. After that the game recovers for a few seconds and then hangs again for another 15 or so seconds. When the game returns the second Time I usually go to fullscreen for a while, and then back to windowed mode and I have no issues for the rest of my gaming session.
I've had this happen on two occasions over the past.... 120? hours of gameplay. I'm ok with that. I've been trying to note the state of my desktop when this occurs, but I haven't seen anything obviously triggering this. I'll have to try and pay more attention on the next incident, but without any real pattern of this yet the odds are I'll never figure this one out.
On a number of occasions though (I dunno, maybe 10?) when I've experienced some sort of graphical glitch, switching once from windowed mode to fullscreen mode (or vice versa) has cleared up any issues I've had.

I'd say that comp is more then well equipped to handle the game, I would try all of that and I would also try the drivers at omegadrivers.com

before i could read any of the replies to my last post, i started playing again. i got through a good 3 hours just fine, thats by far the longest i have played without a crash. although this is probably wishful thinking, i am hoping the problem has magically solved itself. if not, i will try all the helpful suggestions that you guys have posted and report back with the results.

Omega drives are for ATI cards only right?

Sorry, it was omegadrivers.net and they have nvidia drivers as well.
