Cross profession branch casting?

I know this is a stupid thing to ask, but I havn't gotten the game yet and want to know about this:

Can you cast a spell in a branch of your profession that you have not invested points in? Like say, cna i have blood and death at 12 and 10, but cast a curse?

at the base level
