Watch out for Hotmail.com and GuildWars accounts.
Synthos
Recently there have been some incidents where people using Hotmail.com have gotten there GuildWars accounts stolen. I know of 2 people personally that this has happened to. One of my friends had to contact support and prove that he had bought the game in order to get his account back, When he got it back all of his gold was gone and his characters deleted. Apparently hotmail.com has been hacked and not GuildWars, So if your accounts through Hotmail maybe you should think otherwise.

Hotmail is very easy to hack, so I just suggest you don't use it at all. Use something else. I have gmail invites if anyone needs one. I have 150 left, I think.

How can they hack into your GW account by hacking into hotmail?
GW never sent my username and password to my hotmail account, just a confirmation email that only mentioned my email and not my username or password.

Gmail is the only way to go. I actually prefer it to actual server-based email.
I've got more invites to Gmail than I can shake a stick at too, so let me know if anyone needs 'em.

My bad, your email is your login. Ok, so they can get your login but my password has never been sent to my email, but I've never done the in game I forgot my password thing - perhaps this sends it to your email.
And as long as you delete all of your guildwars email, how would they know your hotmail email is a guildwars login?
Darksci
How do they get the login email?
And how do they 'hack' into hotmail?
The recovery password thing for hotmail requires a recovery question to be answered.

I've also got gmail invites, contact me at atrus140 on aim or any of my other messengers below for them.

I am highly doubtful that hotmail.com itself was 'hacked'
Sounds more like social engineering than anything else.

People must stop putting easy answers to the "secret question" you have to answer when you create online accounts.

Usually, if you get your stuff stolen this way, it's to someone you know. "What is your dog's name?" isn't a big secret among friends. Hell, out of a 15 minute AIM conversation, you can usually get that (or first teacher's name, etc) casually out of them. Most of the time when people's accounts get "hacked" into, it's to stupid secret questions and answers like these.
Also, GMail uses these as well, so I don't see how it's any better. User error.

I was just reading about this on another forum and plenty of gmail users have had their accounts stolen as well. In a lot of cases for both hotmail and gmail a persons email and GuildWars accounts has their passwords changed.
This doesn't sound like they are hacking into hotmail or gmail, sounds like they have a keylogger somehow installed.
For people that have been hacked I would like to ask, have you downloaded any "utilities" for guildwars? Are you using the same password for your email and guildwars?

yup gmail user hear as well. used it to sign up in the game. the thing is that i don't know how to check how many invites i have...

Hey, from what is sounds like it's not that Hotmail is hacked or even Guild Wars, it sounds like a keylogger. Some of you may know this as "Spyware", but basically what it does is every keystroke you type in and/or copy/paste or click gets sent to someone (the "hacker") via email. It is miss used but a useful for those novice hackers out there. That is most likely what happened. Ask your friends if they have recently downloaded anything that is not trusted. For example some knockoff "Guildwarhacking.com" site. If so the files they downloaded may have had the keylogger appended to them. I would recommend getting AVG Anit-Virus and scanning the computers they lost their accounts on.

Again, neither hotmail nor gmail are 'hacked' - its social engineering/stupidity ( "Lets set my super secret and super important password to 'pass'") that gets accounts 'hacked'

I also have a Hotmail account and Guild Wars had never sent me and email with my login or password. Just a confirmation that I have created an account. Besides, my email has never been hacked. Only fools get their emails hacked.
Padre
for those that want Gmail for GW, i have about a million invites too.

Personally i use a Gmail account myself, but i was wondering what exactly is the difference between that and hotmail that makes Gmail so "safe"?
egads
Not much really. Gmail just has much better organisation, far less intrusive ads, more space, etc.
I'm definitely privacy concious myself, but reading about Gmail being evil never fails to make me roll my eyes. I can live with a computer searching my email to match terms to Google ads, with absolutely no human involvement whatsoever.
I did a quick Google search and found a rather nice article outlining my feelings on the distrust of Gmail.

Anyways, people shouldn't be using the same password for everything they do online. I have different "levels" of passwords myself. My hotmail has a specific password, as does Guild Wars and my online banking. Everything else (forums, site registrations, etc) have the same passwords since they aren't really important and won't affect me in any way if they get "stolen" or hacked.

My secret word on hotmail has the following hint:
a number you know well...
and the answer is a totally random and irrelevant to anything large number with some 1 replaced with i etc (but not all)
guess that hackers!
