Currency in Factions?
Ravenglass
I was chatting with a Guild mate about currency in Factions, he is of the opinion that the gold/currency in Cantha will be of a different type to that in the first Chapter. I however believe it will be the same - I haven't seen anyone speak about this yet (I did a quick search and can't find anything on the official site either) - what are your thoughts on this?
I can see benefits and downfalls for it being either way...

I think someone started a rumor at one point that it will be different but I think its all the same since Cantha is part of the same world.

I think it will be a new currency. It seems that most ppl are finished the game now and have taken to farming to increase their net worth, just go into any city and you will see more farming groups forming than quest groups. So based on that there will be a lot of $ floating around from now until factions release.
They are trying to promote Factions as a stand alone game, so you don't have to own the original Guild Wars to enjoy it. So why would they use the old currency? Would you be interested in joining an online RPG for the first time if 98% of the ppl playing have had a 9 month period to save up a whack of gold while you're starting out and have 70g in storage?
Players with money will pay anything for something that is unique for their character. Just look at the ogre slaying knife that is essentially useless but can still be sold for 20-40k depending on the boldness of the seller. As soon as current GW players jump into factions they will start buying up everything they can for new looking weapon which will in turn make the prices sky rocket.
So then, what chance does a noob have to get going in the game when they have 200g to spend on a new sword/bow/staff when most other people will be willing to pay 10k because its "unique"? Having that much cash injected into a game with a real economy would be a mess.
So, merely my opinion. What does everyone else think??

Well, if there is new currency, players with "linked" accounts with have two different currencies (4 if you include plat and gold seperate). This is because the account is able to go to both Canta and Tyria. So I believe that they will stick with the gold/plat system because it would be a heck of a lot easier to make both games transition better.

I asked Gaile a while ago about change of currency in Cantha. Gaile's answer to me was something like she was fairly certain that the currency would remain the same, gold is a good currency, but that it was a good question and she'd ask about it. So I waited till the next time she came, and I asked her about it again, and she said a pretty plain no. Gold is gonna be the currency, unless the devs have miraculously changed their mind. End of story.

Maybe they could have an exchange rate...
CanObeans
Well I guess that pretty much wraps up that thread. However, I am more interested in hearing people's thoughts on it instead of yes and no anwers.....

If there was a possibility, I probably would say yes to a change of currency. A change of currency with an exchange rate with gold. Since Cantha is supposed to be a very trading nation, they should have more things of higher value, so the currency needs to be of higher value. It could be like 1 new currency to 100 gold or something like that, but in the new currency things cost larger amounts so it's a big move up. It would make sure nobody's too rich, but it would still keep the old rich'uns happy as they have more than everybody else. You have to make a good balance or people really wouldn't like it.
However, from Gaile's response to me I remain pretty certain it's not going to happen. Would have been nice, but Anet thought otherwise.

personaly im a a ex farmer and i loved to sell to the people that coundt wait a week and git it for about 80% less than hwen it first comes out but yea most of the high price stuff is pretty much usless in my opion
Count to Potato
I don't want it to be like Euro and Dollar, for me gold and platnum is fine if new currency was introduced it would just waste people time
NinjaKai
Think like this. New world possibly new sets of profession armor, etc. Which means one giant gold sink. (Temporary for the most part)

Currency will be the same as now, Gaile said so in one of her broadcasts
Keeper of Birds
I think if they had a different currency, then the laws of economics would take over pretty quickly. An exchange rate would go into effect that fluctuated based on supply of the relative currencies- as most people who are doing PvE gravitate to Factions, the supply of gold would go down (or increase at a slower rate), items would become less expensive in gold, more so in new currency (inflation). You see this a bit now, with ectos functioning as a secondary currency. The exchange rate on ectos (price) being a function of their supply vs. regular gold. When the supply of ectos goes up faster than the general money supply (hoarders sell, drops increase), the price goes down.
It seems simpler to me to just keep gold- people with access to both areas would end up figuring a way to leverage their wealth in the old world into Cantha items anyway. And I doubt that Anet wants to deal with multiple currencies anyway.

My thoughts on the seperate currancies, and the idea that it is unfair to those who start out to let those who have saved up cash to buy everything in Factions ASAP is that they should have the same currency.
Think of it this way. If someone buys Guild Wars today (God forbid that should ever happen!) they're joining up a game that has been out for quite some time now. So shouldn't everyone get the amount of gold they have reset, because there's a new person playing, and it's unfair to them that they have to start out with a small amount of gold?
What I'm trying to say here is that someone buying Factions isn't going to be at any more of a disadvantage than if they went out and bought Guild Wars today, and started playing that. Yes, some people always will have more money than others. That's how life works. If they put in a new currancy for each new expansion, then soon opening up your inventory will take up most of your screen. Two for Prophecies, two for Factions, two for Ch 3... It adds up, in a most serious fashon. Then you've got exchange rates, and they'll probably scale those like they do Rune Dealers or whatnot. And while it's a nice, more realistic touch to put into the game, it's going to make it harder for them to make the rest of the game good, because they'll be concentrating on keeping that working. One worldwide currancy isn't going to mean the end of the game.

Why would they change currency? just to irritate the ppl who already played their game? doesn't seem logic.
=HT=Ingram
you don't get it obviously... betas are just that betas... in past betas the new characters that we created for the beta were reset to 0 in that campaign when it went live. thus the extra day advance access thing... So what this mean is people will blow their gold on stuff during the beta and wamo those uber assassins with the max armors and Sai will be back to Campaign tutorial with Nadda. Bwahahahahaa...
personally I will play the beta and enjoy it, but not spending a crap load of gold in it. If I find something Cool.. but not going to bother wasting resources on beta items that may or may not be wiped once it goes live.

It would be funny:- lets say Chapter 5 for example -we would have different currency for each chapter. Wouldnt that be very confusing?
I am sure it will stay as it is now.

I posted this idea a long time ago... then someone mentioned that even if a new currancy came, people would still want Ectos, and soon the "new" currancy would be just as inflated.
No, the rich will stay rich. And the poor like me will just have to play more to get rich!

Theres a pretty nifty oppurtunity to add a Gold Sink here.
Make it so there are 2 different currencies
Then have a ""Beuro De Change" Who will exchange one currency for the other for i dont know 2% charge ??

It would be nice to see a new currency in Cantha. I think it will stop all the rich people from buying there way through, and buying the top armor and things head off

Even the rich won't have much of a headstart in factions. We'll all be level 1 and we'll all have access to the same armour at the same cost, the only way players with more gold are going to get better gear is if they play the game alot and get to the later levels really quickly. Theres not going to be any level 20s advertising runs to the later levels because we'll all have to start fresh new chars to play factions. Gold will give some advantage but the advantage it will give won't be that great.

By the end of the first week you should be able to be run anywhere on the Canthan map you need, for a price of course.
And to keep this on topic; The currency will remain gold, so that's what you can pay me in Mojo...hehe
Frost1069
it would be cool if they used some other currency in Factions like jade or some sort of gems or sumthing....then have there be a currency echange between the 2 places and the rate would change depending on which currency is worth more at the time...kind of like the real world...it would be an interesting thing to have in game but then again its not really needed

Well, they better not cut your gold in half the way some games do when you port a save. Half your gold would be gone w/o a trace for no reason. I'd be pissed, that'd be 500k doing a hudini on me. Anet better not pull off that **** or atleast warn us before the actual game release that its gonna happen, atleast then I'll have time to invest them in liquidatable materials.
jimmy_logic
New currency please... now there would be currency speculators in the game then. Awesome just like the free world market hehehehe. Then after that they should appoint me as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve heh

Changing currency would be a horrible idea, because if they really do have two expansions every year, think about how much currency that is. Its way too hectic to control, and would make a lot of people mad.

The 1 million point will be considered Bronze so,
1 mill Bronze
1 plat silver
1 gold well gold.

And isn't Plat just Plat?
What was that superexpensive D&D currency? Electrum?

I do not really see ecto as a new form of currency. Sure, I understand that people will trade their items for the "100k+8 ecto" thing but I always assumed it was because of the trade cap to prevent people being taken advantage of. I find ecto is more of a supplement to the economy in this way because it allows the high priced items (which I don't like) to be traded at high prices outside of the normal trade realms.
I mean, I used to play Diablo II like a lot of you most likely did. The game got to the point where it was so bad you could not use gold for anything. I can walk into Droknar's forge and buy most things using my gold/plat until the cows come home. In diablo II all that gold could buy you potions from the merchant.
I would kind of like to see a new currency, even though there won't be one, because I think it would add another dimension to this game. It could be bad if one side became overpowering when it came to cash though I'm sure Anet would step in on those events. When I first started playing Guild Wars black dye was at 42k. Just to let you know it did not discourage me from playing but rather made the experience enjoyable because I would watch the prices of dye fluctuate (and boy did they!) so I could buy and resell to make a profit. To me GW isn't just about PvP or PvE, it's also about a player driven economy which for the most part is working well.

I undertsand the whole gold issue and players just starting out won't have a charr of chance in agaisnt 9 month players. So heres what oyu do to fix this little issue. You make it where you cna't transfer gold from one Tyrain into Cantha, here the laugh if you have gold on you when you go to travel from tyria to Cantah or vis versa they take whatever extra gold on you. So you have a bank account in both worlds you keep your item but not your gold. I know it wouldn't make sence but it would take care of the money issue.
Kool Pajamas
It wouldnt matter anyway. If you changed currency you could just buy materials in Tyria and sell them in Cantha. There might be a slight loss that way but you would basically have the same amount. Unless they created whole new types of material for each chapter, but I seriously doubt that.
