Pets
Ashleigh McMahon
Hi.
Just made a ranger, and Can't decide wich pet to get.
I'm patriculary attracted to having a Strider, but I've been told there weak.
My other choice is a normal wolf.
Are pets weaker than others? Or are they all balanced in a way?
Also, whats the difference between a strider/ moa bird, or a wolf/ snow wolf?
Thanks.
Regards, Ashleigh.

I believe the only general diffrence that anyone has found so far is attack speed and defence. One may have a better attack speed, while the other has a higher defence. Beast Mastery determines how much damage you pet your pet can do, however. Higher Beast Mastery = higher damage output.
I don't think that anyone has recieved factual proof of this, but thats the summary of what you would find scrounching around search.

bird/lizard = fast attacks
wolf/warthog - rounded
cat - high offense, low defense
bear - high defense, low offense, has special maul attack
spider - not sure on stats, but supposedly will poison target from time to time
that's it so far as I can remember, by all means correct me

So, in a way, there is no " best pet" and no " worst pet" ?

Konquest
Exactly. As there is no "best class" or "worst class" in Guild Wars. Each have their advantages and disadvantages.
It mostly depends on what you need to go well with your character.

Striders and wolves are pre sear moa's and snow wolves are post sear. All the pets are about the same. Just tame one and try it out you cans always give it to a tamer and get something else.

And has anyone but me REALLY wanted the little chicken near Ashford as their pet?

I have a question. Are the wolf and the snow wolf the same in terms of speed, damage, and armor? I would figure the snow wolf to be "better." However, that perception is based upon the fact that one finds it later on in the game.

strider sure aint weak. my strider outlives most stalkers and there's no difference between the strider/moa, i got my strider as a level 1 pet; at level 6 it became a moa then level 10 playful strider, and finally at level 15 a hearty strider.
but yes, it seems that all the pets are pretty much the same, just looks-wise preferences. Except maybe the black widow because that has a low chance of poison apparently

I've been told ingame that the bears are uncharmable by many many many people. in fact I've never heard of anyone charming a bear. Every time I try to charm a bear I get about halfway through and then nothing. has anyone had any success charming a bear?
btw. I'm a level 8 and just entered Old Ascalon.

From what I understand post-searing bears are easy to charm (never tried myself, the bear can go hang for all I care), and the pre-searing bears CAN be charmed, but you have to keep them from casting their charm breaking skill somehow, like knocking them down. Of course, this has all been covered many times here already.
