By 'love triangle' I beleive that they meant Paulus was Melka's "Backdoor Man" (please don't misinterpret that one as well) AKA "the guy who was 'keeping her company' while her husband was away." In situations like these, it's usually considered a high priority to prevent said husband from even knowing of the existance of said guy.
Though, I must say that your version of events makes things even more interesting in Ascalon...
By the way, I noticed this the first time I ran through the game as well. At first I figured the Dev's had thought it might seem harmless since chivalrous relationships (non-sexual) were common in the time period in which GW is (kind of) set and, on top of that, Paulus was a monk. Of course, it's apparent now that most players minds, including mine, didn't view it like that.
