What's the best combination for someone who seeks a pure DPS that will stay will also stay alive in the heat of battle?

Not possible. Balance prevents this. In order to make yourself "survivable", you have to cut into your damage rather heavily.

All you have to do is understand "what is pressure?", then you will be able to create your own pressure build.

1) Force their healing supply to react constantly to every different situation, forcing them to burn through their energy even under good energy management.
2) Someone disrupt/slow their ability to respond to your pressure. (this not only apply to e-denialing their monk, but also disable their warrior to use signet, ranger's troll ungent, killing hex controller, etc)
3) Create scenarios that would force couple different decision making by your opponent, while during the chaos, their decision will be poorer than usual. Punish them for wrong decision making.
4) No time for the opponents to regen and get back on their feet.
5) No skill of yours should be sitting around doing nothing, no skill in your bar are over relied on and have long recharge at the same time.
6) Able to chain your opponent down and punish them for losing the pressure game, before they escape and regroup.
7) Fearless, excellent coordination, and good decision making.
8) An offense is nothing, if you can't keep yourself alive.

A good pressure build can kill people even without doing anything directly against monk (against lesser opponents, although in high end, you will have to do something about their supplies).

So, go around TA and RA to see if you got the right build.

With PvE, you know what your up against, and the enemies usually nurf their build after people start bragging how their owning NPCs on Guru.

That's the difference, when you know what your up against, you can be better equiped for the situation and expect what you expected.

Obviously, warriors have the best DPS, Armor and Defense skills in the game.

A warrior generally can carry three attack skills to maintain a very high DPS, two armor boosting skills (Dolyak and Watch Yourself), a defense skill, a healing skill and a rez. This warrior would be very hard to kill and would be a main damage dealer in a party.

for pvp, one of the best self survivability skills is healing sig. You absolutly need this if you are going to do any kind of solo work (like taking out some npcs or attacking a flag runner perhaps). It gives a large amount of healing and has a good recharge, of course it does give you -40 armor, but you should only use it when you either arnt targeted or there are only 1 or 2 ppl attacking you.

It's somewhat agreed upon that warriors have the best sustained DPS, but it's simply not true when it comes to spiking or vs heavy armour, or a variety of other situations (multiple foes etc...)

So no, it isn't obvious.

As was said, you can't have "pure DPS" and survivability.

And warriors aren't the DPS kings in every respect, though they do put out impressive DPS.
