Nice to see some of the GWG members have submitted entries in the Guild Emblem Contest. We have gotten a lot of entries -- far more than I expected -- and judging is going to be very, very hard. The quality has been pretty exceptional, and narrowing it down to 10 will be a challenge of the highest magnitude.

There is still time to enter! The deadline is 17th February, and we invite anyone to send in his or her concept!

No, they keep having contests for people who are........ya. One was writing an essay/story, this one's about drawing. Next one's gonna be who can solve the molecular gotang junction of a proton, one after that will have people building scale model's of a spacecraft that can land on Pluto. Then they'll have a follow up contest to see who can train the better crew of space monkey's to fly the damn thing. I guess my point is, unless they hold a contest involving Hockey, drinking Molson Canadian, or a combinatation of those things, I will never enter a Guild Wars contest.

Or until they start a music composition contest, I'm likewise out of the field. My drawing skills are hideous. I'd end up with... you don't want to know.

What about a Sean Connery sound-alike contest? "Now shee heah!"

hahah kunt0r I was thinking exactly the same thing. I have about as much artistic talent/create flair as a dead gnat. I missed that Gene.

Hell, I would even have a better chance at the building spacecraft, solving complex mathamatical problems or something.... over the artistic persuits.

<sigh>

They need to have competetions normal people can enter. Only a small percentage of the population can draw or write a long story.

ANet has to limit their contests to a certain group of talented people. If it was something such as a Molson beer drinking contest, what would be the incentive of winning...a ladder on Guildwars.com that shows how many bottles each entrant had drunk? A contest such as an Emblem contest would actually better the game by using gifted GuildWars fans to improve the variety of the game.

I had worked on one for a bit, but it wasn't turning out well, and was diffucult for me to do, so I abandoned it.
I was starting out in Macromedia Freehand, but the controls are just impossible and fustrating to use compared to Fireworks, or even Photoshop/etc. (which were two programs I'd use after the initial design in freehand)
Hence I abandoned it.
It was going to be a kind of an Aztec face... squareish with rounded corners, large rectangular eyes and a very large rectangular grin.
Kinda like the Olec 3000-year-old carved head of Xtapolapocetl from the Simpsons, but actuually extremely different.
I think it would ahve been cool. Even the simpsons one would have been cool.
Kinda like this, except again, very different http://www.mayalords.org/incfldr/face.GIF

I'm not so much of the artist, so I wrote "Concept Sketch" on my entry.

Im not the best artist either but I didnt let it stop me! I just got mine done and expressed it off today. Hope it gets there in time.

Drawing takes forever, because you have to construct the ideas, and sketches, and then narrow it down, and then work out a good image, and then present it, and then deal with ink that simply will not dry on mylar, and how to present that too =P

I did my best to make a nice looking image but clean and as professional as I could to help compensate for my skills.
Its of two orca-type whales circling each other, with the fins as points outward, and the negative space inbetween suggesting meaning as well. If by some grace of God I win, you'll see it!

The drawing might not be the best, and the presentation either, but they were the best I could do.
I put a lot of hard work into the conception and reasoning for each aspect of the image.
I sent in the other conception drawings I did when I was trying to come up with something just for fun (but not as submissions).

I hope if there are a lot of good ones, they choose more than 10 (even if they don't say so). Cause after all that work on it, I REALLY want to use my emblem in game now! (And I also hope that if I win they'll let me try and help out some more with testing daily, and maybe some more image ideas).

Anyways, drawing skills or not it seemed to me that if you put some effort into making it presentable and especially very thoughtful about why that emblem, maybe they might pick you afterall.

Just a hope

In my opinion, this contest really is more about creativity... why? because they even said that the final emblem in the game WILL be made by their graphic artist, with the winner idea as the base. (although presentation still important, but a simple drawing with uniqe idea got just as good chance I believe)

Funny how the 2 side of the world act so differently... I remember reading some article about the difference between american go player and japanese go player in general (go = a strategy board game)... the american tend to give up so easily while the japanese just wouldnt give up... =/ both have pro and con... it is respectable for someone to not give up, but sometime it is darn hell annoying when they are dead yet still trying. While giving up easily give you an easy win, it is annoying that they just wasted your time for such lousy game.

Someone want to give me a good excuse why they sux at drawing? (i mean heck, even people without arm can draw wonderful pictures... then what the hell is wrong with the people with arm?)

I suck because I never draw or practice. Drawing is like anything else in the world. What you focus on grows. I'm not saying I would be a genius at it if I gave it my all for a decade, but maybe I would be. Who can say?

If most of us stopped focusing on drawing in 3rd grade, and then started again at 30, we'd wonder why we are terrible. It's not because we aren't talented, but because what drawing talent we had has languished since 3rd grade. You see your 3rd grade skills and think 'I SUCK, Im not talented at all'.

I think that is true of a lot of professional artists as well. Many have no special talent, they have simply worked incredibly hard for something they have wanted. Some may say otherwise, but I think they are just insecure.

Who shoots a better hoop in a pressure situation? The man who is just a talented shot and does naturally well at free throws, or one who has practiced that freethrow 150,000 times? Under pressure or criticism, I think the practised will prevail. The talent will develop. Think about it, on every street in every town in the nation there is a talented kid who can draw, or 3. You knew one and so did I. Why did some succeed and others not? Why did some who were not talented succeed? Work, work, work.

With enough practice, even the untalented can become very succcessful with enough hard work. In the art world, there are many examples of artists who's early work is really terrible stuff, but their later work magnificent. VanGogh is a good example. His early work was not anything special, he didnt begin drawing until later in life - but he was an extremely hard worker and found his style eventually.

yes but we're not talking about shooting free throws where it is the same every time. drawing and music are things that you have to have an eye or an ear for. lets face it, some people just suck at music. likewise at drawing. you can get better at it, but you'll never catch up to that guy with the natural talent. it will be a cold day in hell before anyone catches up to Jimi Hendrix.

natual talent need to develope too, no matter what kind of genius u r... u willl still have to learn it... look at those expert artists, how many years/piece have they drew?

if u dont start now, u will always sux at it.. "99% of effort, 1% of talent"

Bingo! We don't expect that someone will design an image that can go directly into the game. We are simply looking for the good ideas, and our artists will take it from there. I'm glad you said, that, Vermillion.

Well that's good to hear!

You aren't really gonna make us wait all the way until March the 4th are you Gaile? If it takes that long to get the right ones, I'm for it of course. But I hope to be disappointed or not-disappointed much sooner than that!!

Well, the first time I read the announcement regarding the emblem contest, I was really excited. That is, until I read the by snail-mail only line..

I entered the contest, althought I know my chances of winning are slim, I did it for fun.

The lines are jagged because I enlarged the image after finishing it. It wasn't much of an enlargement but it shows .
