Ok i play counterstrike, call of duty, and battlefield 2 quite often and sometimes i get ping issues; it is VERY annoying and makes me want to throw my computer across the room, i get pings around 200 or so wen its usually down around 40; im also using a linksys router...

anyone know how i can keep this from problem from occuring?

Depends on;

- Your Internet Connection
- Processor, RAM, Graphics Card
- The location of the Server your playing on
- How many other players are on the Server

And a few other aspects.

So first of, start by telling us how many players are with you when you get your ping, your internet connection speed and the specs of your Computer.

pentium 4
2.53 ghz
1 gig of Ram
nvidia geforce 6800 128 ram

the number of people in server varies completely, the ping problems seem to b quite random

i have DSL by the way

It depends also on the location of the Server your playing on.

Have you tried turning down the quality to minimum to see if there's any change in gameplay? (Just to test, or if it's already at lowest quality then forget this).

Try installing the latest Graphics Card driver from www.nvidia.com .

^^ If the latest still doesn't help it at all, try 1 or 2 versions before the latest.

Ping has nothing to do with cpu, ram, graphics card................Josh where did you hear that m8??.

High pings can be a couple of things, the most common is downloading stuff(having a bit torrent file open), internet pages open, or an internet provider problem. Router/gateway can also affect this but my router doesn't..

Ping (Especially on the Half Engine) has everything to do with CPU/RAM/GFX

If the server is sending your computer information about where a player is on a map, and your CPU/GFX Cant render that players movement fast enough, your ping will be higher, so the server will send it slower so that it can actually render it correctly...

the Half Life engine (and I believe also STILL in the Source engine) bases everything off 'TickRate' (your computers MM Timer) which means a slower CPU, is a slower MM Timer, hence Lower Frame rate, higher pings, and sometimes jumpy sound...

Any ways... What ISP are you on??? and where do you live??

Cannonfodder, ^^ What Ghozer said is my answer but the above answer is more in depth than I would've said.

Hmm, the only way the processor would slow down, is if it is doing more than one thing, as I said cpu alone would not cause high ping rate, I used to play and probably still can C:SS on a 1gig athlon with an acceptable ping rate. So what you said isn't quite true, sure having your PC do more than just gaming will affect your ping rate, but more than likely it is server related or isp related.

You also have to remember other players on the server with high ping's can affect your play too.
